Important Notice Due to the nature of wireless communications, transmission and reception of data can never be guaranteed. Data may be delayed, corrupted (i.e., have errors) or be totally lost. Although significant delays or losses of data are rare when wireless devices such as the Sierra Wireless modem are used in a normal manner with a well‐constructed network, the Sierra Wireless modem should not be used in situations where failure to transmit or receive data could result in damage of any kind to the user or any other party, including but not limited to personal injury, death, or loss of property. Sierra Wireless accepts no responsibility for damages of any kind resulting from delays or errors in data transmitted or received using the Sierra Wireless modem, or for failure of the Sierra Wireless modem to transmit or receive such data.
Safety and Hazards Do not operate the Sierra Wireless modem in areas where blasting is in progress, where explosive atmospheres may be present, near medical equipment, near life support equipment, or any equipment which may be susceptible to any form of radio interference. In such areas, the Sierra Wireless modem MUST BE POWERED OFF. The Sierra Wireless modem can transmit signals that could interfere with this equipment. Do not operate the Sierra Wireless modem in any aircraft, whether the aircraft is on the ground or in flight. In aircraft, the Sierra Wireless modem MUST BE POWERED OFF. When operating, the Sierra Wireless modem can transmit signals that could interfere with various onboard systems.
Note: Some airlines may permit the use of cellular phones while the aircraft is on the ground and the door is open. Sierra Wireless modems may be used at this time.
The driver or operator of any vehicle should not operate the Sierra Wireless modem while in control of a vehicle. Doing so will detract from the driver or operator’s control and operation of that vehicle. In some states and provinces, operating such communications devices while in control of a vehicle is an offence.

Communicating with Fastrack Xtend
• Connect the RS232 link between the PC com port and the Fastrack Xtend. • Configure the RS232 port on the PC as follows:
COM Port : 1 (commonly used port for PC serial)
Bits per second : 115200
Data bits : 8
Parity : None
Stop bits : 1
Flow control : hardware
• Open communication software such as a HyperTerminal to communicate with Fastrack Xtend.
• Basic AT commands to get started with Fastrack Xtend:
AT Command Description
AT+CGMI Fastrack Xtend will respond "WAVECOM MODEM" if the serial link is properly set
AT+CPIN=xxxx to enter a PIN code xxxx (if activated)
AT+CSQ to verify the received signal strength if registered to the GSM network
AT+CREG? to verify the registration status of Fastrack Xtend to the network
ATD<phone number;> to initiate a voice call
ATH to hang up (end of call)
For further information on these AT commands and their associated parameters, refer to ʺAT Commands Interface Guideʺ.

General Purpose Input/Output GPIO
Fastrack Xtend is provided with two external general purpose Input/Output ports and one Voltage reference line: GPIO21,GPIO25 and Vref.
Vref sets the reference voltage of the input or output of the two GPIOs. Leaving it unconnected sets the GPIO level at 2.6V by default.
The GPIOs may be controlled by AT commands:
• AT+WIOW for a write access to the GPIO value, when the GPIO is used as an output, • AT+WIOR for a read access to the GPIO value, when the GPIO is used as an input.
Example: GPIO set as an Output
AT+WIOM=1,”GPIO21”,1,0 Activates GPIO21 as an output and sets it at low level
AT+WIOW=”GPIO21”, 1 Sets GPIO21 output level to high level
Example: GPIO set as an Input
AT+WIOM=1,”GPIO21”,0 Activates GPIO21 as an input
AT+WIOR=”GPIO21” Reads GPIO21 level, the return value “1” represents high level
Pull GPIO21 pin to GND, and then read again. The return value will be “0” which represents low level.
Refer to ʺAT Commands Interface Guideʺ for further information on AT commands.
After reset, both GPIOs are configured as inputs. The AT+WIOM command must be used to change this configuration (refer to ʺAT Commands Interface Guideʺ for further details).

Voltage Description
1 GPIO21 I/O 2.6V* General Purpose I/O
2 GPIO25 I/O 2.6V* General Purpose I/O
3 Vref I 2.6V to 15V Voltage reference for GPIO
* These are the voltages of the GPIOs when Vref is not used or left open.
Note: It is recommended to use six wire power supply cable for easy access of these three lines.

ON/OFF Pin
Fastrack Xtend is provided with an external ON/OFF pin and is used to turn ON or OFF the modem. To utilize this feature the table below describes the operation.
Condition ON/OFF Pin Power Supply Operation
1 Open 4.75V to 32V supply is initially applied Fastrack Xtend turns ON
2 Pulled to GND 4.75V to 32V supply is initially applied Fastrack Xtend remains OFF
3 Left Open for
2 ~ 3 sec (TBC) then pulled GND
4.75V to 32V supply is initially applied
Fastrack Xtend turns ON and will remain ON until AT+CPOF is send or Alarm mode is activated to turn OFF the modem
LED Indicator
The Fastrack Xtend status of operation can be interpreted by the red LED indicator located next to the SIM connector.
LED Status LED light activity Fastrack Supreme Plug & Play status
LED ON continuous Fastrack Xtend is switched ON but
not registered to a network
LED Slow Flashing Fastrack Xtend is switched ON and registered to a network (Idle mode)
ON
LED Rapid Flash Fastrack Xtend is switched ON and registered to the network, (communication mode)
OFF LED OFF Fastrack Xtend is switched OFF, or Flash LED is disabled* by the user.
* Flash LED can be disabled by user when in Slow Standby mode in order to save power consumption. Please refer to "AT Commands Interface Guide" for further information on this command.
