What is AP - 40?

Mechanism of action, how does it work?

Horny Goat Weed works in following ways-


(A) Horny Goat Weed (Icariin) shares several mechanisms with

modern drugs used to treat sexual impotence and improve sexual

performance such as sildenafil (Viagra) and vardenafil (Levitra).

In particular Icariin enhances the production of bio active nitric

oxide and inhibits the activity of PDE-5. These are the

mechanism by which modern drugs such as Viagra and Levitra

works. PDE-5 inhibitors block the degradation action of enzymes

in the smooth muscle cells lining the blood vessels in the spongy

tissue of the penis. Nitric oxide has the effect of dilating the

blood vessels and therefore allows for an increase in the flow of

blood to blood vessels, in this case an increase in the flow of

blood to the blood vessels of the penis. Therefore, the

mechanisms at work in horny goat weed are very similar to those

in modern drugs designed to treat erectile dysfunction, except of

course it is in the form of an all natural supplement.

(B) Horny Goat Weed inhibits an enzyme called acetyl

cholinesterase (AChE). AChE rapidly stops neurotransmission

at cholinergic synapses like those found in the brain and at

neuromuscular junctions, which are needed for speedy responses

in the neuromuscular system. By inhibiting AChE, Horny Goat


Weed supports higher levels of the key cholinergic

neurotransmitters associated with sexual arousal.

(C) Epimedium might have MAO (mono-amine-oxidase-

inhibitor) activity. In trials they showed that levels of

noradrenaline, adrenaline, serotonin and dopamine levels were

all elevated in animals given Epimedium. High dopamine levels

encourage the release of leutenizing hormone (LH) from the

pituitary gland. LH in turn stimulates the testes to produce more

testosterone; this may help to explain the pro- sexual effects.
