The annual production of tea in the world is about2.9 million tons. The most production of tea and thelargest areas under tea planting are belonged toIndia and China respectively. Tea production inIndia is about 750,000 tons. China’s tea area is

950,000 hectares. Recently, Kenya and Turkeyremarkably increase their production. In Japan, inspite of limited areas(about 50,000 ha), the amount ofproduction(about 90,000 tons)is large enough, aswell as Kenya.

A lot of tea is consumed in British countries such asIreland and United Kingdom, and also in thecountries where tea is produced. In USA andEuropean countries, the consumption of tea is lowerthan that of coffee. Also in Japan, the consumption oftea is only 760 g per a head per a year(approximatelyone third of coffee). In Japan, tea consumption( money basis)in the

home is about 16 percent of all drinks. During lasttwo decades, the consumption of tea has beencontinuously decreasing. This tendency suits asresults of change in Japanese meal and life style. By fargreen tea had been served only with hot water insidetea cups. Recently, however, new goods of green tea incans and PET bottles were developed and thedemand for these is largely increased.
