Reduced IT and help-desk staffing requirements: The IT-related staff requirements are actually decreasing — despite the fact that the number of mobile devices is substantially increasing. The automation virtually eliminated the errors inherent in manual staging and provisioning, greatly reducing calls to the support desk as well as staffing requirements. In addition, the ability to view historical information allows IT to spot and rectify issues before users are affected, reducing device related problems and the associated help-desk calls.

Improved the ROI and TCO for mobile devices:

The ability to resolve issues right in the field minimized downtime for devices and end-users, while the ability to heavily automate staging and provisioning greatly minimized IT management time. The result is the substantial reduction of the single largest cost of any mobility solution — everyday management of the mobile devices.

What we are doing

For one of the UK’s largest Supermarket chains we are staging Motorola MC17’s for a large UK roll-out.

The process involves updating application files and installing software. Using MSP we can start the process on a computer and then dock the MC17 into a cradle to finish the process.

Instead of before having to wait till the unit finished the alterations on a computer many units can be done simultaneously. This has improved efficiency and reduced labour costs.

On previous projects we have used the Barcode feature when creating packages on MSP. The Barcodes are then scanned by the unit and the updates start.
