PRETREATMENT SYSTEMS
Pretreatment is a critical step in a properlyoperated water treatment system. Siemens WaterTechnologies offers a full range of pretreatmentequipment for removal of particulates, chlorine, chloramines, silt, iron, manganese, hydrogensulfide and many other contaminants.
Our CT carbon towers are specifically designed forthe food and beverage industry. They aredesigned for steam sanitization to keep the carbonfree of micro growth and other contaminants.
We also offer chemical feed systems for treatmentof your water with anti-scalants, pH adjustmentchemicals, sodium metabisulfite, coagulants andmore. Siemens can perform a complete analysisof your water to determine the properpretreatment system. Pretreatment is key to goodperformance and long life for membrane filtrationsystems.

MEMBRANE TECHNOLOGIES
Our wide range of membrane technologies include – ReverseOsmosis (RO), Ultrafiltration (UF), Continuous Microfiltration (CMF)and Nanofiltration (NF). Our extensive operational experience isunmatched in the water industry, with responsibility for over 1,000RO systems and 50,000 plus membranes.
REVERSE OSMOSIS
Reverse Osmosis (RO) is used to provide ultimate water purity. Mostions are rejected at 98 - 99% by an RO system. RO systems can be usedto make USP purified water for bottling or provide control over producttaste.
Advancements in membrane technology have allowed RO systems to usemuch less energy than in the past with common water recovery rangesfrom 75 - 80% for optimum membrane performance. A second brinerecovery RO can also be used to provide water recovery rates as high as85 - 90%.
For your RO needs, we offer the BevMax™ RO system, which is aprepackaged unit designed for beverage and drinking water applications.Standard sizes include 75, 115, 165, 225 and 300 gpm (liter / sec) productflow.
ULTRAFILTRATION
Our ultrafiltration membranes are effective in protecting beverage plantwater from viruses and bacteria like Giardia and Cryptosporidium.Ultrafiltration membranes are supplied in molecular weight cut-offs rangingfrom 5000 - 100,000.

Ultrafiltration is effective in reducing the silt density index (SDI)of feedwaters, and it can be used as an alternative to limetreatment systems where the feedwater has low alkalinity.Siemens offers a variety of ultrafiltration designs includingspiral wound membranes and hollow fiber membranes. Ourultrafiltration membranes can provide years of reliable service.
CONTINUOUS MICROFILTRATION (CMF)
Continuous Microfiltration (CMF) offers a highly effectivemethod to remove suspended solids, colloidal material, algae and bacteria from your incoming water. Thesequalities make CMF an ideal pretreatment for ReverseOsmosis and Nanofiltration membrane systems or as areplacement for conventional filtration methods. CMF isalso effective in lowering the turbidity of spring waters.Siemens is the leader in microfiltration systems, with morethan 700 installations worldwide.
NANOFILTRATION
Our nanofiltration membranes are used as an alternative tolime coagulation units. Often known as a “SofteningMembrane”, nanofiltration is widely used in carbonatedsoft drink plants where removal of alkalinity and hardnessis required but there is not a requirement to make ultrapure water. Either cellulose acetate or thin film compositemembranes can be used. Water recovery levels range from80-85%.
MAXIMIZING RECOVERY RATES
Reject Recovery RO's are gaining popularity in thebeverage industry for increasing the recovery rate ofmembrane filtration systems. As shown in the processflow diagram, the reject from the Primary RO is passedthrough a smaller Reject Recovery RO. The permeatefrom the Reject Recovery RO is then used as treatedwater or sent back to the front end of the watersystem, depending on the final water quality required. This technology can typically increase the overallrecovery rate of a membrane system from 75-80% upto around 90%. For a large beverage system, thismodification can save millions of gallons of water peryear and pay for itself very quickly. We have extensiveexperience in using this technology to reduce waterusage and save money for our customers.

6
Siemens offers a full range of membranes to meetyour water needs. To maintain optimumperformance, membranes require sanitization andcleaning. We offer on-site membrane cleaningutilizing a Clean in Place (CIP) skid or a highlyeffective off-site cleaning solution.
Our specially designed membrane cleaningoperations are cost effective, provide thoroughcleaning and extend membrane life. In addition, weoffer membrane autopsies and complete laboratoryservices to evaluate system performance andimprove productivity.
Trained service technicians can also provideassistance with membrane removal and installation.
CONTINUOUS DEIONIZATION (CDI)
Continuous Deionization (CDI) is a continuousprocess for producing high purity water without theproblems and costs associated with hazardouschemicals and waste neutralization.
When an RO system is followed by the CDI® process, operating costs are significantly reduced and there isless wasted reject water when compared to aconventional two pass RO. The CDI® process hasproved to be a highly productive and efficientmethod of producing water that complies with allFDA Purified Water regulations. This technologyoffers low power consumption with high recovery(95%+) rates.
ION EXCHANGE
Ion Exchange (IX) is extensively used in thebeverage industry for mineral or color removal.Siemens has the largest inventory of bead andpowdered resins in the industry with a widerange of ion exchange resin services.

MEMBRANE VACUUM DEGASIFICATION
The process of membrane vacuum degasification isused in the beverage industry to produce water withvery low levels of dissolved oxygen. Commonapplications are found in the brewing industry and forany products that require low oxygen levels. Thesesystems can be designed to produce O2 levels as lowas 1 - 5ppb.
BENEFITS OF MEMBRANE DEGASIFICATION
• Improved oxygen removal
• Ease of cleaning
• Small footprint
• Lower installed cost
• All stainless steelconstruction makes forsuperior aesthetics

CARBON TOWERS
Activated carbon is widely used in the beverage industry toremove chlorine and chloramines in feedwater. Carbon isalso used to adsorb off-tastes and organics such as THM’sand HAA’s. Siemens offers a variety of adsorber vessels tomeet every application.
Our patented “Heat Optimized Technology” or HOT Seriescarbon towers represent state-of-the-art construction forboth bacteria control and for low backwash waterconsumption. The efficiency of sanitization with 185 degrees F
(85 degrees C) backwash water is much greaterthan that of conventional steaming. HOT Seriescarbon towers use up to 75% less backwashwater than conventional methods.
CARBON REBEDDING
Selecting the best activated carbon for aparticular application involves a detailedanalysis of the water to be treated. By couplingSiemens’ computer modeling, treatabilitystudies and water chemistry information withour extensive technical knowledge of activatedcarbons, selection of the most cost effectivecarbon for a particular application can be made.
Virgin activated carbon can be delivered to yourbeverage plant either in bulk or in bags. Bulkdelivery allows for labor-free sluicing of the oldcarbon and hydraulically pumping carbon slurryback into your towers. Siemens has the facilitiesand capabilities to analyze and reactivate yourold carbon as well as provide disposal services. Our field data demonstrates excellent chlorineand THM removal.
Our BevCarb® line of bituminous coal carbonscan provide months or even years of reliableservice at a competitive price and eliminate theinconvenience of changing you own carbon.
