Dear Reader
Human activity has had a significant and immeasurable impact on the natural environment undermining its capacity to support life and sustain human development.Environmental issues have become some of the most visible and significant currently facing the global community and weigh heavily on the public consciousness.
Climate change, our reliance on fossil fuels and a decline in the abundance of natural resources are just some of the major issues facing mankind. It is imperative for the survival of the natural world and the continuation of human society that we find sustainable solutions to these problems which do not impede but rather contribute to human development. This is the aim of a wide range of Irish companies operating in the environmental sector.
The demand for sustainable solutions to a large number of environmental issues has created new business opportunities for Irish companies who have fully embraced the challenges of working in this area. As this has become an extremely competitive area, which requires truly innovative solutions, Ireland’s environment sector has had to ensure it can provide unique, cutting edge products and services which can meet the demands of a global client base. This has been achieved through a collective approach by Irish companies working in partnership with each other the wider research community.
Dr. Robert GeraghtySenior Development AdviserEnterprise Ireland

IntroductionEnterprise Ireland’s mission is to help Irish companies grow and to expand into overseas markets. The organisation works in partnership with Irish companies to help them compete in the global marketplace. Enterprise Ireland provides companies with information, technical assistance, networking opportunities and targeted assistance some of which is supported by financial incentives. To encourage innovation in Irish companies the organisation also provides a range of supports to Irish companies which are aimed at increased R & D spend, improving productivity and on training and knowledge-building. Companies are provided with a package of incentives to collaborate with the Irish research community on the development of new technologies.
Enterprise Ireland (www.enterprise-ireland.com) is the gateway to Irish suppliers of world-class environmental services and products and can save key decision makers valuable time and resources by meeting with them directly to discuss their business needs, acting on behalf of these Irish companies to enhance their businesses, provide new solutions and present alternative suppliers.
Enterprise Ireland operates through a network of 36 international offices to support Irish companies as they grow and expand into overseas markets. The organisation works strategically with those companies which export environmental products and services. These companies are arranged into capability clusters and regularly profiled. Key target markets for each cluster are selected and supports aimed at establishing, or building on an existing, market presence are provided. Trade-shows, networking & partnering events & localised marketing collateral as well as building relationships with key buyer/purchasing groups/organisations serves to boost the international profile of Ireland’s capability clusters and to win export business.
In seeking to attract the interest of international buyers and purchasing groups, Enterprise Ireland aims to win over key decision makers by providing up-to-date, consistent marketing information on relevant Irish suppliers and by bringing overseas buyers and influencers into contact with Irish suppliers of services and products. Enterprise Ireland’s overseas Market Advisors liaise directly with overseas buyers to identify new products/solutions and present alternative suppliers.

NRG WASTE MANAGEMENT Limited
Description of Business3NRG was established in 2006 and is part of the FLI Group. Their autoclave technology processes unsorted household and commercial waste. Through this process they can recover the organic fraction of waste which is cellulose fibre. This is a biomass material which is then used as the fuel in a gasification process to generate green electricity. From the Front end Autoclave; metals, aluminium and plastic are recovered.
By utilising the combined technology as described here the facility is capable of diverting 85% of the incoming waste from landfill. For every 100,000 tons of waste processed, 85,000 tons can be recovered, between the clean recyclables and the organic fraction (cellulose fibre). 4Mw of exportable power is produced from every 100,000 tons of incoming waste.
Products & ServicesMunicipal Solid Waste (MSW) Autoclaves and associated back end power generation diverting upwards of 85% of waste from landfill, generating renewable power and recovering recyclable materials.
Other technologies include Anaerobic Digestion, Gasification and Pyrolysis.
Key Customers3NRG supplies waste management companies, mining companies, property developers, councils and Local Authorities. Key clients include Anglo American plc, McCain Foods, Inco Limited, Sisk and Roadbridge.
