Clinical expertise

In the years 1983-1999, I have been working in clinical practice as a medical psychologist at the University Hospital of Antwerp, Belgium, where I was involved in the clinical care of cardiac patients. During this period, I also completed a 3-year postgraduate training in behavioral therapy. In 2000, at the age of 42, I made a major shift in my professional life and started my academic career

as an associate professor at Tilburg University, the Netherlands. Following my appointment as professor of medical psychology in 2002, I started with the development of a new 2-year master’s program in medical psychology. Academic expertise: Center of Excellence at Tilburg University

In 2008, I founded the Center of Research on Psychology in Somatic diseases (CoRPS) at Tilburg

University. The mission of CoRPS is to improve our understanding of the interface between mind and body, in order to achieve optimal health care for patients with medical or psychological conditions. The theoretical framework that drives the CoRPS research agenda is the biopsychosocial model of health, which is based on the notion that mind, body and social environment interact in causing disease. This has resulted in multiple high-quality projects and publications in the best journals in the fields of

psychology and medicine and the CoRPS research staff is internationally recognized for their expertise.

CoRPS was evaluated by an external committee (chaired by Prof. dr. J. de Haes, University of Amsterdam) for end-term quality and deliverables in 2013 which followed a successful mid-term review

(chaired by Prof. dr. J. Blumenthal from Duke University, Durham, NC) in 2011. Both committees were unambiguously positive about the achievements of CoRPS. In the end-term review, the committee emphasized its high standing: “CoRPS must be regarded as a leading center in clinically oriented medical psychological research at the European level’’. The mid-term committee concluded that “the quality of the research to be outstanding’’, “professor Denollet has assembled a superb team of investigators”, and “the worldwide recognition that it (CoRPS) has achieved is well-deserved.’’

In 2014, an expert panel appointed by the Board of Tilburg University and chaired by Prof. D. Breimer advised the board to award the qualification ‘Center of Excellence’ to CoRPS which was followed by the

official recognition as center of excellence. In their final report, the Breimer committee stated that “the quality of the CoRPS’ output is of very high level” and that “the research center ranks among the best

research institutes in its discipline internationally, with an international focus not only connecting psychology and the medical science, but also managing this for very different disease groups”.

Academic expertise: Psychological factors related to medical conditions

My research focuses on the interaction between behavioral factors (personality, emotions, stress) and

the development and progression of heart disease. This research includes a variety of methodological approaches, such as observational studies, intervention research in cardiology, research on biological and behavioral mechanisms of disease, large-scale research using panel data, questionnaire construction and validation, and studies on the generalizability of findings in an international context. Findings of this research indicated that Type D personality (which refers to the synergistic effect of two personality traits, negative affectivity and social inhibition) was associated with increased morbidity and

mortality in cardiac patients, and that this personality type comprises a risk marker on par with biomedical risk marker. Type D is also associated with adverse outcomes in patients with peripheral arterial disease and with disease-promoting inflammation in heart failure. My research also focuses on depression, anxiety and other psychological factors that relate to chronic disease disease.
