RESEARCH ACCOMPLISHMENT AT Ph.D.LEVEL:
"Enzymatic, Haemolyt ic and Metal -Resis tance Studies AmongClinical Isolates
of E col i of Mammalian Or igin: Correla t ion with Drug -Resistance”
Emergence of ant ibiot ic-resistance among cl in ica l bacter ia is one of the ser ious
handicap of ant ib iot ic - therapy. This res is tance can very wel l be t ransferred to the
susceptib le bacter ia st ra ins v ia PLASMIDS. In my Ph.D. work , which inc ludes
studies on 284 c l in ica l Escherichia.coli s t ra ins, af ter screening them for ant ib iot ic
- res istance, B-lactamase ac t ivi ty among penic i l l in and ampici l l in res istant s trains
has been examined to learn about the poss ib le mechanism of such res istance.
Moreover, a l l the iso lates under study, have further been invest igated in order to
e luc idate the poss ib le ro le p layed by haemolys ins in the pathogenesis of d if ferent
infect ion. In addit ion to the ant ib iot ics, several metal l ic sa l ts a lso const i tute the
impor tant group of chemotherapeutic agents , my invest igat ions are, therefore,
a imed at g iv ing the informat ion as to what propor t ions of E. col i strains among
var ious condi t ions of men and animals is becoming res istant towards even metals?
Al l the s tra ins have a lso been surveyed for the presence of transferable and non-
tranferable PLASMIDS , involved in coding these characters.At las t, E. col i s trains ,
possess ing these propert ies have fur ther been examined for the prevalence of
resistance to commonly used ant ibiotics . Al l such p lasmid - mediated characters
have been f inal ly cor re lated with each other .
