KU Newsletter January 2008 1 I am grateful to the Government of Andhra Pradesh for reposing confidence in me and appointing me the 11th Vice-Chancellor of Kakatiya University. I deem it a privilege to serve the student community of this region. I would try my best to follow the great traditions established by my predecessors and to give a new impetus to the academic development of the University. Teaching and research are life- breath of any university and I will take all necessary steps to strengthen them. I appeal to the teachers, students and non- teaching staff to put in concerted efforts and achieve a better grade by NAAC when the University goes in for re-accreditation later this year. Further, I am confident that the University will get a major share of grants from the UGC during the XI Plan period.To achieve these goals, discipline and dedication are essential. The University has a social responsibility and it is expected to play the role of a pathfinder. I therefore appeal to the people’s representatives, industry leaders, prominent citizens and members of public of the four districts to support the University in every possible way in serving the society better. Adieu….. I am Contented

It has been a gratifyingexperience for me to serve KakatiyaUniversity as its Vice-Chancellor. Icould do whatever was possible forme with the unstinted co-operationof all. I wish to state that theUniversity has achieved substantial progress in termsof infrastructure facilities and academic activitiesduring my tenure. The recruitment of the teachers intwo phases helped strengthen academic programs. Iam happy that the students, the research scholars andthe faculty have been using the campus networkingfacility and the e-journals to improve their academicperformance. Introduction of new courses boosted themorale on the academic front. The impetus given tothe academic programmes can be understood from theMoUs signed with Central Michigan University, USAand Murdoch University, Australia and discussionsheld with the North Carolina University. Further, thefinancial contributions received from the NRIs andAlumni are a sign of the improving image of theuniveristy at the international level. I hope that theUniversity will continue to receive more such supportin future. I congratulate the NSS and Sports wings ontheir achievements.

I lay down the office of the Vice-Chancellor witha sense of fulfilment and I sincerely thank my fellowadministrative officers, the teaching and non-teachingstaff, the students and the elite people of this regionfor their co-operation, and the love and affection theyshowered on me.

Prof, N. Linga Murthy Takes overCharge as Vice-ChancellorProfessor of Economics Dr. N. Linga Murthyassumed the office of the Vice-Chancellor ofKakatiya University on November 12, 2007. Heis the 11th Vice-Chancellor of the University. Born on 14-12-1951 in choutapalli village ofKarimnagar district, Prof. Linga Murthy beganhis career as Junior lecturer in 1975 at C.K.M.Arts & Sceince College, Warangal. He joinedKakatiya University service as lecturer in 1981and went on to become professor in 1992. Sevenof his students were awarded with Ph. D and 19M.Phil degrees. He has published seven booksand 36 research papers in reputed journals. Heserved the University in various capacities asDean, Head, Chairman of B.O.S. in Economics,Principal of University College, Controller ofExaminations, Director, S.D.L.C.E. and theCo-ordinting Officer of the UGC Unit. He is theChairman of the Grievance Redressal of Non-teaching employees of the University. Prof.Murthy is also a member on the Peer TeamCommittees of National Assessment andAccreditation Council of India (NAAC). He isa member of many professional associations. Hewas honored with Best Teacher Award by theGovernment of Andhra Pradesh in 2004. Hevisited Hong Kong, Singapore , South Africa andDubai to present papers at the internationalconferences.

National Seminar on Gandhian Approach and Rural DevelopmentA two-day national seminar on“Gandhian Approach and RuralDevelopment” was organized onAugust 27-28, 2007. Speaking atthe inaugural session as ChiefGuest, the Vice-Chancellor ofMaulana Azad National UrduUniversity Prof. A.M. Pathandescribed Gandhi as a socialscientist who devoted his entirelife to the country. Gandhistrongly believed that India’sdevelopment lies in ruraladvancement. Presiding overthe meeting the Vice-Chancellor,Prof. V. Gopal Reddy, assertedthat Gandhian philosophy is the

need of the hour and a panaceafor the present day violence andrampant crime. Pre-RD CampA contingent of 15 NSS volunteers ofKakatiya University participated in thePre-Republic Day Camp at JiwajiUniversity, Gwalior, from October 25, toNovember 3, 2007. Of the 80 studentsselected from eight universities of AndhraPradesh, the highest number were fromKakatiya University. The KU contingentalso included as many as nine girlvolunteers.

Mr. Damodar Rao happens to be the onlyprize-winner from Andhra Pradesh. ThePrize carries a cash award of Rs. 2, 500/-and a citation by the Sahitya Akademi. Hehas won this prize for his English translationsof poems by Mahe Jabeen, a well-knownfeminist-activist-poet based in Hyderabad.

Computer Labs InauguratedThe Vice-Chancellor Prof. V. Gopal Reddy inauguratedtwo computer labs in the University P.G. College onSeptember 6, 2007. These labs are equipped with 50computers to provide computer facilities to the MCA andMBA students of the college. He also inaugurated twoclassrooms constructed at a cost of Rs. 23 lakh on thesecond floor of the college building. Further, he laid thefoundation stone for the construction of additionalclassrooms and women’s waiting hall in the collegepremises. These works were be taken up with anestimated cost of Rs. 31.5 lakh. Speaking on the occasionProf. Gopal Reddy said that top priority would be givento providing amenities to the students.

Professor of Commerce andBusiness Management Dr.K.Sayulu was appointedRegistrar of TelanganaUniversity at Nizamabad. Prof. Sailu hailsfrom Nizamabad district. He assumed the officeon January 2, 2008. Having put in 25 years ofteaching experience, he has guided five Ph.Dand six M.Phil students and published 30research papers. He has held academic andadministrative positions in the University.

Pharmacy Alumnus Visits KU

Pharmacy alumnus, US based pharma entrepreneur Dr. DyapaArjun Reddy visited the university on September 1, 2007. Hedonated USD 5000 for the College of Pharmaceutical Sciences inthe past. He is an active member of the alumni in the US. Speakingat a meeting convened at the College of Pharmaceutical Sciences,Dr. Arjun Reddy said that it gives him immense pleasure to workfor the development of the college where he once studied. Hesaid that there is a huge demand for pharmacy professionals andbright career opportunities await them around the globe.Speaking on the occasion the Vice-Chancellor Prof. V. GopalReddy said that a separate cell would be established to look afterthe stay of former students who come to the university fromabroad either to deliver lectures voluntarily or interact with thestudents for their benefit. He thanked the Pharma alumni for theirgenerous donations for the development of the college.

Appointed Vice-Chancellor ofNalgonda University

Prof.V.Gangadhar, Department ofCommerce and BusinessManagement, Kakatiya University,has been appointed Vice-Chancellor of Nalgonda University.A distinguished scholar ofCommerce and BusinessManagement, Prof. Gangadhar hasa long teaching experience of 33years and published 70 articles and14 books. As many as 10 researchscholars successfully completedtheir Ph.D degrees under hisguidance and 12 scholars theirM.Phil degrees. He has attended 20national seminars and chaired eightsessions. He was honoured withBest Teacher Award by the StateGovernment in 2006. He has heldadministrative positionssuccessfully as Registrar, Controllerof Examinations, Dean, Head andChairman Board of Studies inCommerce at Kakatiya University.As its Convener, he conducted theState Level Common Entrance Test,ICET, successfully for twoconsecutive years. He worked asprofessor at the University ofAsmara, Eritrea, for several years.

Dr. V.Srinivas, Associate Professor of English,has been invited to be the Consulting Editor forThe Journal of Literatures in English published fromGulbarga, Karnataka, the first issue of which waslaunched recently. He was also the editor of the23rd and 24th issues of Kakatiya Journal of EnglishStudies. He is also a member on the CurriculumDevelopment Committee, APSCHE, Hyderabad.

IAAT Award

The Indian Association of AngiospermTaxonomy in its 17th Annual conferenceheld at the Department of Botany, ShivajiUniversity, Kolhapur felicitated Prof.Vatsavaya S. Raju of Plant SystematicsLaboratory, Department of Botany,Kakatiya University, Warangal with Prof.V.V. Sivarajan Gold Medal, a memento anda certificate of merit by Prof.Krishnamurthy, the President of IAAT, forhis twenty five years of invaluablecontributions to the field of taxonomy ofangiosperms of India, taxonomy teachingand service to society as taxonomist. He isthe first botanist (taxonomist) to receive thishonour from Andhra Pradesh.

A two-member delegation from theEritrea Institute of Technology underthe leadership of Prof. Ghobrebrhau,Academic Vice-President and Prof.Gabriel, Dean of Social Sciencesvisited Kakatiya University onDecember 20, 2007. The mainpurpose of the visit was to explorethe possibility of offering Master’sand Post-doctoral programmes to theEritrean students at KakatiyaUniversity. The team visited thedepartments of Bio-technology,

Informatics, Pharmacy and Physics to study the infrastructure and research facilities available at thesedepartments. In an interactive session at the Senate Hall, the team had exchanged views with the Deans,Heads and Chairpersons of different departments/faculties. The Vice-Chancellor Prof. N. Linga Murthysaid on the occasion that it was time to showcase the achievements of the university to the world outside.Plans to enter into MoU with some foreign universities for faculty exchange as well as to offer courses arein the pipeline, he said. Prof. Ghobrebrhau responded by saying that entering into academic collaborationwith the University would be highly beneficial for the Eritrean students.

Career Awareness and Recruitment Drive (CARD) programme was organized at SRR Govt. Degree College,Karimnagar, by Andhra Pradesh State Council of Higher Education in collaboration with KakatiyaUniversity on November 24, 2007 with the intention of creating awareness on job opportunities in IT andIT based companies. The programme was intended to sharpen soft and other skills and aimed at bridgingthe gap between the rural and urban students.Chief Guest of the programme Prof. K.C.Reddy, Chairman,APSCHE called upon the students to develop their communication skills and build self-confidence inorder to secure jobs. Linga Murthy, the Vice-Chancellor of Kakatiya University said that theprogramme would improve employability of rural students and guide them in competing in global market.Under this recruitment drive about 14 companies such as WIPRO, ZENPACT, HCL, ICICI Prudential,Vodafone conducted interviews and 460 students were recruited. About 3500 students participated in theprogramme.

Foundation Stone Laid

The Vice-Chancellor Prof. N. Linga Murthy laid thefoundation stone on December 6, 2007 for theconstruction of compound wall, Stores Shed andapproach road to the Examination Branch. Theseworks involve an estimated cost of Rs. 38 lakh.

Prof. N. Satyanarayana, department of Chemistry andProf. Y. Madhusudan Rao of Pharmacy were selectedfrom Kakatiya University for Best Teachers Awardsfor the year 2006.They were felicitated by the ChiefMinister of Andhra Pradesh Dr. Y.S. RajasekharaReddy on October 5, 2007.Prof. N. Satyanarayana, the senior most professor ofChemistry of the University, has a long teachingexperience of 34 years with Physical and PolymerChemistry as his specializations. He successfullycompleted three projects and guided 6 Ph.D scholarsand two M.Phil scholars. He has attended about 50seminars and published 45 research articles in Indianand international journals. He visited France, theUnited Kingdom and Germany for advanced researchpurposes. Prof N. Satyanarayana, has become amember of The American Chemical Society recently.

Another distinguished pharmacy faculty memberhonoured with the Best Teacher Award was Prof. Y.Madhusudhan Rao. He has successfully completedfour research projects of AICTE and UGC worth Rs.40 lakh and has on hand another project of NAFETICworth Rs. 60 lakh. Apart from putting in a rich teachingexperience of 30 years, Dr. Y.M. Rao guided 13 Ph.Dscholars in Pharmacy and published 69 research articlesin journals of international repute. He also has to hiscredit two patents in the field of Pharmacy. He wasalso the recipient of the Best Pharmacy Teacher Awardin 2006.

B.P.Ed. CourseInauguratedThe one-year course inBachelor of PhysicalEducation wasinaugurated at theUniversity on September5, 2007. Attending theinaugural function as theChief Guest, former Vice-Chancellor, Dr. K.Jayashankar, stressed theneed for integratededucation system. He saidthat physical education is

necessary for all round personality development of the students. Presiding over the meeting the Vice-Chancellor Prof. V. Gopal Reddy said that the Sports hostel with a cost of Rs. 50 lakh is coming up and thedepartment would be strengthened by appointing regular faculty during the next phase of recruitment.

University Profile ReleasedThe Vice-Chancellor, Prof. V. Gopal Reddy, released the Kakatiya University Profile on October 8, 2007.The University Profile was brought out for the first time that serves as a ready reference for details of thecolleges, departments, centres and facilities available in the University. Speaking on the occasion Prof.Gopal Reddy said that the profile has been brought out as it is imperative, in the changed scenario, toexpose the university to world outside. He appreciated the efforts of Prof. G. Damodar, the Chairman ofthe University Profile Committee, Mr.V. Krishnama Chary, PRO and the Convener of the Committee, andother members.

The Vice-Chancellor Prof. V. Gopal Reddy inaugurated the CommonMess Hall which was constructed at a cost of Rs. 30 lakh. It providesdinning facility for about 800 students at a time with state of artcooking gadgets. With the commissioning of this Common Mess Hallthe boys of all the hostels on the campus will be able to dine at oneplace. Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Gopal Reddy said that commonmess would result in reduction of mess charges.

Free Health Check-up CampA free health check-up camp wasorganized at Kakatiya Universityon September 22, 2007. TheUniversity Health Centre, incollaboration with NicolasPyramal India, Ltd. conductedBone Density Test. According tothe Medical Officer Dr. B.Goverdhan, this test is required todiagnose the osteoporosis andosteopenia and it costs upwardsof Rs. 1500 if done at a privatemedical facility. About 100 peoplefrom among the faculty, non-teaching staff and studentsunderwent this test.

A one-day nationalsymposium on PharmaEntrepreneur ship Vision2020 was held on July21, 2007 at the SenateHall. Delivering thekeynote address Mr.Pankaj R. Patel, CMD ofZydus Cadila, saidattention to healthcareis increasing signi-ficantly all over the

world. India occupies the fourth position in drug production as well consumption. As expenditure onR&D is increasing enormously with reduced productivity, the US and European pharma industry isprojected to get into a crisis by 2020. India would provide solutions to the crisis with its low cost productionand highly skilled personnel. The traditional system of medicine too is undergoing a transition leading toindividualized medicine. Presiding over the symposium, the Vice-Chancellor Prof. V. Gopal Reddy saidthat pharma industry is playing a pivotal role in national building. The Chairman of International Alliancefor Economic Empowerment, Bangalore, Mr. Saurabh Lahiri and Chairman of the Hyderabad basedEkalavya Foundation Mr. P. Venugopal Reddy too addressed the symposium.

APSI Honour’s AwardProf. K. Jagan Mohan Reddy of the Departmentof Botany was awarded the “APSI Honour’sAward 2006” for his outstanding research,achievements and contribution to the field ofPlant Science. The academy at its 16th APSIScientist Meet and National Symposium held onDecember 17, 2007 at Narendra Deva Universityof Agriculture and Technology, Faizabadhonoured Prof. Jagan Mohan Reddy with a GoldMedal and citation.

Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Hostel InauguratedThe Vice-Chancellor, Prof. V. Gopal Reddy, inaugurated the new boys’ hostel building on the IndependenceDay, August 15, 2007. Constructed at a cost of Rs. 1.10 crore and having a capacity of 40 rooms, the hostelaccommodates 150 students. It is named “Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Hostel” in honour of the great statesmanand architect of the Indian constitution. Speaking on the occasion. Prof. Gopal Reddy said that top prioritywould be given to providing all possible facilities of the students. Two more hostels, one for the Pharmacystudents and another for girl students, are in the offing, he said.
