Principal Investigator in the Wellcome Diabetes Study (WDS) – a study of
characterisation of newly diabetic patients in India and their prospective follow
up (since 1987). Now 20 year follow up.
Principal Investigator in Pune Children’s Study (PCS) of the association of birth
weight and glucose tolerance and Insulin resistance at 4 years of age (since
1991). Children studied again at 8years of age and currently at 21 years of age.
Principal Investigator in the intra-uterine growth of babies in rural India in
relation to their mothers' nutrition before and during pregnancy, (PMNS) Pune
Maternal Nutrition Study; (since 1993).

Bioimpedence Generated first equation for Bioimpedence in Indians. (1999).
Principal Investigator in the study of relationship between maternal body water
changes and offspring size at birth and its growth in infancy. (2004).
Principal Investigator in a study for Genetic polymorphism affecting triglyceride
metabolism as an independent determinant of insulin resistance and type2
diabetes in Indian patients: Use of Mendelian Randomisation principle
(WELLGEN Study); (since 2005). Described for the first time the association of
TCF7L2, FTO and 32 other genetic polymorphisms. GWAS for T2DM recently
completed.

Established diabetology as a speciality in Pune.
Set up the first centre of excellence in diabetes at KEM hospital Pune. which included
a day care centre (moving away from a old idea of admitting diabetic patients for
control), Created human resources and laboratory infrastructure, and training
programme
Set up first centre of excellence in diabetology research in western India. This includes
a large department with 50 staff members (scientists, clinicians, nutritionists,
biochemists, psychologists and field staff).

intrauterine programming, including those with Sheikh Rashid Diabetes Unit, Oxford,

Described and popularised the concept of thin fat Indians
Set up the first prospective study of normal and diabetic patients (Wellcome Diabetes

Initiated many studies in life-course evolution of diabetes and cardiovascular diseases

Pioneered a community based study of pre-conceptional enrolment of mothers and life
time follow-up of offspring (Pune Maternal Nutrition Study)
Described regulation of fetal growth and body composition by maternal nutrition and
one- carbon metabolism
Proof of concept community based intervention with physiological doses of vitamin
B12 to reduce plasma homocysteine (as part of primordial prevention studies)
Poised to role out a large community based nutritional intervention in adolescents to
