PROFESSIONALDEVELOPMENT WEEK

REV. 1/6/20 PD WEEK SPRING 2020 – P. 1

Professional Development Week, Spring 2020 Tuesday, January 7 – Friday, January 10

Central Theme: Operationalizing Equity at IVC

Greetings, colleagues,

Over the past year and a half, IVC has been focusing on the general theme of better understanding and improving equity on our campus. As we move into 2020, the focus of PD week and of several professional development opportunities on campus will turn to “operationalizing equity”—that is, how we may address equity issues in the day-to-day life of our campus, especially in the classroom.

This spring’s Professional Development Week has been designed as follows:

Tuesday, January 7: Campus Theme – Dr. Sumun L. Pendakur, the Chief Learning Officer and Director of the USC Equity Institutes at the USC Race and Equity Center, will be the keynote speaker at the President’s opening session. She’ll be speaking on putting equity into operation in her address, “No Time for Spectators: Your Sphere of Influence.” The President’s lunch will supply discussion questions for table conversations. The afternoon will feature a faculty-led discussion on best practices for equity in classroom teaching, followed by an open house tour of campus equity resources for our students.

Wednesday, January 8: IVC and District Workshops – The second day of PD Week offers two sets of workshops on topics of interest to the IVC community (and, some have said, particularly focused on those with technology interests). The sessions bookend the Faculty Association Town Hall and Luncheon, held on the IVC campus (in the PAC) during this PD Week.

Thursday, January 9: Meetings – This day is dedicated to campus-wide, school, and department meetings. The morning is reserved for Instructional Council and Academic Senate Plenary, while schools meet in the afternoon. Some department meetings will follow school meetings. The evening is reserved for the VPs’ welcome and for school orientations for part-time and full-time faculty.

Friday, January 10: Trainings and Assistance – The final day of PD Week begins with an open session on Technology and IVC Research Resources—an opportunity for some of us to ask questions we have always wanted to ask. The Acting President will be hosting a luncheon for IVC classified staff at noon. Most of the afternoon is reserved for more department meetings and trainings.

We wish you a restful and restorative winter break and look forward to seeing you on January 7.

REV. 1/6/20 PD WEEK SPRING 2020 – P. 2

President’s Session Plenary Speaker: Dr. Sumun L. Pendakur

Session title: “No Time for Spectators: Your Sphere of Influence”

Description: In this interactive keynote, Dr. Pendakur will dive into a multi-part framework for the way we approach our work, as educators and as designers of the learning environment. Blending story and skill-building, the talk explores the possibilities of imagining and taking action, in ways that transform practices, the experiences of students, faculty, and staff, and the institution itself.

Biography: Dr. Sumun L. Pendakur (Sumi) serves as the Chief Learning Officer and Director of the USC Equity Institutes at the USC Race and Equity Center, dedicated to advancing racial justice in higher education and other sectors. Prior to this position, Sumi held roles as the Assistant Vice President for Diversity and Inclusion at Harvey Mudd College and as the Director for USC Asian Pacific American Student Services. The body of her work focuses on helping campuses, non-profits, and other organizations build capacity for social justice and racial equity. Sumi is a scholar-practitioner, whose research interests and publications focus on Critical Race Theory, Asian American and Pacific Islander students, change agents, and institutional transformation. She has held leadership positions in the professional associations for her field and presented her original research at NASPA, ACPA, NADOHE, NCORE, and ASHE. Sumi was recently re-appointed to the Board of Directors for NADOHE, the national chief diversity officers' organization. She has served as Faculty Coach for the AAC&U’s TIDES (Teaching to Increase Diversity and Equity in STEM) Institute. She is also the co-editor, with Dr. Shaun Harper and Dr. Stephen Quaye, of Student Engagement in Higher Education: Theoretical Perspectives and Practical Approaches for Diverse Populations (3rd edition) (2019). In 2019, she was named one of the top 35 women in higher education by Diverse: Issues in Higher Education magazine.

Tuesday, January 7: Campus Theme – Operationalizing Equity

8:00 – 9:00: COFFEE AND BREAKFAST (PAC LOBBY)

Join your colleagues to reconnect after winter break.

9:00 – 12:00: PRESIDENT’S SESSION (PAC)

Acting President Cindy Vyskocil welcomes us back to campus and introduces our plenary speaker, Dr. Sumi Pendakur. The opening session will also include greetings from the Board of Trustees and Chancellor Burke, music from one of our accomplished IVC students, and an update on IVC’s Master Strategic Planning Process.

12:00 – 1:00: PRESIDENT’S LUNCH (PAC LOBBY)

We’ll follow up Dr. Pendakur’s address with a lunch and table discussions. Each table will be given a list of questions to promote conversation on operationalizing equity in our spheres of influence on campus. Sit down with familiar colleagues or reach out to ones you may not know as well as we discuss strategies and challenges to improving equity at IVC.

1:00 – 2:30: FACULTY DISCUSSION (LA 103)

Members of the IVC faculty and staff lead a discussion with their colleagues on how equity affects day-to-day life in the classroom and on best practices. We’re hoping that this discussion of best practices and idea sharing will be the starting point for further work during the semester, through IVC’s initial participation in the USC equity seminar, our IVC Equity Symposium in April, and faculty/staff discussions and lunch groups.

2:30 – 4:00: OPEN HOUSE TOUR OF IVC SERVICES SUPPORTING EQUITY (BEGINS IN LA 103)

A memorable request of our new full-time faculty this year at IVC was for a more complete understanding of campus services that, every day, make equity more of a reality by giving students the tools and resources they need to successfully meet their educational goals. What better means, then, than a walking tour of these facilities and brief introductions of services by the people who staff them. The walking tour begins in the Writing Center (LA 103).

4:00 – 5:00: OPEN TIME FOR PREPARATION AND INFORMAL MEETINGS (VARIOUS LOCALES)

The Academic Affairs Committee has worked to keep the length of our PD week days reasonable—after all, classes start in less than a week! This open time allows for preparing for the first day of classes, and for departments or informal groups to meet while on campus.
