Recognizing the talent and experƟse that our own faculty possess, this year the General Studies department created a “Teacher’s Leading Teachers” In Service Day. Several teachers and department chairs volunteered to lead workshops on topics relevant to our instrucƟonal program. All stamembers were given the opportunity to select two workshops that resonated with their individual needs and goals as educators. These workshops included DierenƟaƟon in the Math Classroom and MeeƟng the Needs of All Learners, led by Mrs. Rochie Sommer; Student Engagement/Class Engagement by Mr. Nagel, Science In the Classroom taught by Rabbi Wieder, Technology (Google and Smart Notebook) led by Mrs. Friedman, Visual Notetaking, which I had the privilege of leading, and our Social Studies Curriculum WriƟng CommiƩee, chaired by Mr. Nagel. We also provided all teachers at every elementary grade level and each MS department the Ɵme to collaborate and plan instrucƟonal goals. This opportunity to “cross pollinate” between the boys and girls divisions and between Middle School departments was embraced by all faculty members in the General Studies department. At YBH, we conƟnue to set a very high bar for professionalism of our sta. They seek out opportuniƟes to learn and perfect their craŌ, recognizing that above all, it is the children that maƩer. Our teachers are open to learn new techniques if it will improve learning outcomes and enjoy a school culture that nurtures them as professionals and as colleagues. This approach is a “win win” for teachers and most of all, the students. It conƟnues to be a privilege to be a part of the school leadership team at YBH. Parnes Hayom Learning was dedicated  on the following days:  At YBH, we are commi ed to professional

growth to enhance the educa on of our  students. On Tuesday , November 8th, the morahs par cipated in two sessions to further develop greater student mo va on and  ownership of learning by fostering a growth  mindset in the classroom. Mrs. Mindy Lindsky, director of Hadrachani AdvancedTeacher Training Ins tute, present‐ed on the topic of How to Raise/Teach a Smarter Child. Brain malleability, understand‐ing the difference between a growth and fixed mindset and the impact on the learning expe‐rience were discussed . The interac ve presenta on included a number of strate‐gies  for the morahs to implement in the class‐room to promote and develop student intelli‐gence and mo va on. It was an informa ve and an insigh ul workshop. We are privileged to have talented morahs with exper se in various domains of peda‐gogy. Morah Davis, our 7th grade morah is a veteran educator with extensive knowledge and skill in designing lessons and ac vi es to meet the needs of all learners in the class‐room. The environment created in her class‐room provides the tools students need to be independent learners and connect to the hashkafos and topics discussed.

Morah Davis presented on the topic of Project Based Learning in a Limudei Kodesh class‐room, a teaching method in which students gain knowledge and skill by working for ex‐tended periods of  me inves ga ng and re‐sponding to authen c, engaging  and complex ques ons, problems or challenges. This style of learning fosters ownership of content, helps create greater connec ons to the topic and allows morahs to differen ate styles and levels to meet students’needs. Morah Davis discussed the importance of Torah as a Toras Chaim and that as mechanchos, our responsi‐bility is to make Torah come alive and per ‐nent to our children’s lives. Examples of grade wide PBL Limudei Kodesh subjects were shared and discussed. It was a meaningful workshop as the morahs iden fied areas in their curriculum in which implemen ng this concept would be beneficial.  As follow up to our sessions, the morahs will share strategies they have implemented in their classrooms and how student learning was enhanced at upcoming staff mee ngs.

Dear Parents, The excitement of the Yomim Tovim may be behind us but the spirit of learning and mee ng curricular objec‐ves and the an cipa on of extracur‐

ricular ac vi es does not abate. I have met with the eighth grade commi ees, who work on various inspira onal and exci ng programs throughout the year. The commi ees are venues for imple‐men ng students’ ideas into our pro‐gramming, encouraging student ini a‐ve and fostering leadership and or‐

ganiza onal skills. Equally important is the contribu on of each commi ee in crea ng ruach and achdus throughout the school. The girls enjoyed a fun filled assembly as they were introduced to our G.O. Commi ee; Rena Cohen, Nechama Rosenblum, Devora Sandler, Russy Hirsch as well as this year's theme of " me”  “לכל זמן ועת” . Each girl received her own "watch" to help them internalize the importance of using our " me" to serve Hashem. It was heart‐warming to hear the beau ful voices of our girls blending together as they sang their theme song for  ז“תשע .

Each month we will set aside " me" to explore a different middah. For the month of Cheshvan the focus is עת  During this month we will .שלוםcommemorate the mabul on  ז חשון“י , which we know occurred due to a lack of shalom. Rashi states:   ,”שנאוי המחלקת וגדול השלום“        “Hashem hates discord; how great is peace”.   It is such a pleasure to see the girls’ display of achdus and inclusive‐ness in class and during recess and lunch me as well. How wonderful it was to hear from new YBH families that their girls feel so welcomed in their classes. I am so proud of our girls!   Stay tuned for upcoming programs  designed to raise the girls’ skill levels and elevate their ruach to even greater heights.                 Have a wonderful Shabbos,  Mrs. Chana Frumit Stern  Asst. Principal, Girls Division

LIMUDEI KODESH UPDATE-GIRLS

Page 4: PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AT YBH · 2011-11-16 · ben Yaakov Meir and Yitzchok ben Shalom Avraham, great grandfather & great uncle of Rena (8G), Malka (5G) and Sara Shira (3G) Cohen,

Morah D’Vorah’s Kitah Alef: We enjoyed a lovely Rosh Chodesh assembly. We learned about Chodesh Cheshvan and all about Rochel Imeinu, whose yarzeit is this Shabbos and about her special middah of vatranus, le ng things slide and looking the other way. We are progressing in our Kriah book, having mastered the shva na and shav nach sounds. The girls are picking up on their Ivrit skills and reading stories from our Ivrit sefer. We are also prac cing rosh milim and shorashim in prepara on for learning Chumash and can't wait to get our Chumashim in February.  Morah Strulowitz’s Ivrit Classes: Have you heard about our new Ivrit Reading Buddies program here at YBH? Over the past month, students in Morah Strulowitz's 7G and 8G Ivrit classes visited Morah Sho‐shana's Pre 1A class to read Hebrew stories together. The energy in the room was pal‐pable as the older and younger students paired up with each other to bond, build up their self‐confidence, and develop Hebrew fluency. While it is difficult to say who en‐joyed this special program the most, we all certainly agree that we can't wait for our next visit!

7G visited the new NY Tappan Zee Bridge construc on project. The NYS highway department explained that the crane, one of

the biggest sea‐faring in the world, came from San Francisco via tug boat and paid a $70,000 toll to cross the Panama Canal.

Morah Rosenberg and Morah Weiss's Kitah Daled: Morah came to class with a beau fully wrapped gi  box that was passed around as the girls guessed what gi  she had brought inside the box. The guesses were crea ve, such as a stuffed ani‐mal, candy, and a clock, but everyone was surprised when we opened it and found a Sefer Yehoshua inside! We were so excited to begin learning Navi and celebrated with pastries. Each girl got her own Navi workbook and a Navi medal to wear. The highlight of the day was Rabbi Leiner’s visit to our class. He spoke about the importance of Sefer Yehoshua in par cular, because it is about Eretz Yisrael. He also explained that when you learn Navi, you are not just learning a subject but learning the D’var Ha‐shem, but Hashem is talking to us! What a powerful message! We hope to internalize these lessons as we begin learning the text of the sefer. Morah Rosenberg's class enjoyed a special Kriah program to improve reading fluency. The class has collec vely completed the en re sefer Tehillim during Sukkos vaca on. To celebrate this accomplishment, we had a mini siyum and learned a new class game. Morah Weiss’s class learned that Yosef con‐stantly said Baruch Hashem and B'ezras Hashem, described as Shem Shamayim Shagur Bifiv and we are trying to remember to incorporate these words in our daily conversa on as Yosef did. It will be shagur and we can earn a sugar cube. What a sweet way to learn!

The kindergarteners have been busy learning about this beau ful season, Autumn. It was

thrilling to take a nature walk and collect leaves of all shapes and colors, while listening to them crunching under our feet. We got a close look at their veins, using magnifying glasses from

our science center. Thank you, Hashem for our magnificent world.
