Introduction
In Spring 2018 the Professional Development Committee administered a survey to employees to develop ideas and inform priorities for professional development. 293 respondents provided feedback. Highlights of the survey responses include:
-Two thirds of respondents have taken at least one class at Cabrillo.-About one third have taken an extension course.-Flex week and Flex Fridays appear to provide the bulk of professionaldevelopment opportunities used by respondents.-The top two areas respondents said would be helpful were interdepartmentalcross-training and common office software such as MS Office, Colleague, andAd Astra.-Department chairs appeared especially interested in professionaldevelopment on student recruitment / advisement / retention, managingconflict resolution, and community outreach.-FLEX activities and conferences appears to be the most desired modes ofengaging in professional development but other modes such as bringing intrainers or online had appeal to some.-Money followed by time were the primary barriers to attending conferences.-For instructors, opportunities to share practices with colleagues was highlyvalued along with training on pedagogy and culturally responsive teaching.-There also appeared to be strong interest in conflict resolution techniquesand learning how to use data dashboards.-Administrators additionally showed interest in strategic planning training.-Overall, employees expressed interest in stress management andcommunication skills.

It is common for about 10 students in a class to participate verbally duringdiscussions, while many students remain quiet. As an instructor, it would be helpful to learnstrategies to invite all students to voice their ideas and opinions.

Q12 Faculty: What changes would you make to improve FLEX week and/or FLEX Fridays?
Answered: 55 Skipped: 238
# RESPONSES DATE
1 Please make All College Day more meaningful. It's been dreadful these past several years. Irecommend Cabrillo include more meaningful topics that are relevant to our students' lives so we,as educators and professionals, can better support them. For example, why not bring an expert tohelp us understand how to better support our undocumented students; LGBTQ students; studentswith learning differences; etc.? We could use All College Day in much more productive ways. Also, our administrators should at the very least mention/address current important social justice issues--i.e., black lives matter; ICE raids, reversal of protections for LGBTQ people, Muslim ban, Me Toomovement, school shootings, etc. At other colleges and universities, these important socialmatters are publicly addressed and they reiterate their commitment to diversity, equity, and socialjustice. Our students are affected by these issues; faculty/staff/administrators are affected bythese issues. Cabrillo can bring in experts to guide us (different themes/topics for each All CollegeDay).

5 Hear more from Cabrillo faculty, for free. We have a lot of talent here on campus. Over the yearsI've wondered why we have paid some of our guests on all college day, as opposed to having ourown faculty share information

6 Two workshops offered on the same, one morning and one afternoon so attendance for one or theother could be possible for adjunct faculty. Nighttime Flex events on topics such as Canvas, etc.for adjunct faculty to be able to participate.

10 I always enjoy the cross-disciplinary sessions to learn novel techniques and ideas that I can applyin my field.
3/7/2018 12:24 AM
11 I am an adjunct employee. Having flex training after 4:30pm is easier for me to attend moreevents. Saturdays would be an option for me. Not sure about other adjunct staff.

19 Comment (not related to FLEX week or FLEX fridays): Cabrillo does in-house/flex professionaldevelopment well, but the lack of financial support to attend professional conferences is a problem. Before I came to Cabrillo, I was struck by Cabrillo's absence at standard professional conferencesin my field. My field changes rapidly and involves a lot of resource sharing. Most professionalsattend 1 or more national conferences annually. Cabrillo is not involved in these broaderconversations. This impacts full-timers and part-timers. Both want to keep up-to-date and growprofessionally.
3/6/2018 3:32 PM
20 For Flex Fridays, always have a key note speaker and/or film. 3/6/2018 3:28 PM
21 Return All College Day to its former Friday position in the week 3/5/2018 3:44 PM
22 Please wait until North County schoolchildren go back to school in the fall to schedule All-CollegeDay. It's a big hassle every year to find and pay for this one-time childcare (they don't start schooluntil Wed of flex week), and I have had to miss a few since this day was changed from Friday toMonday of flex week. I'd be curious to see how many of us this impacts (I personally know of sixother faculty families w/elementary-age kids in SC). The change felt like punishment for notscheduling flex activities early enough in fall flex, but the fact is many of us in Santa Cruz arehome with kids through Tues. of that week and HAVE to push most activities off to Wed-Fri andlater in fall semester.
3/5/2018 10:47 AM
23 Start later in the day, especially the division meetings. For those who teach evening classes, getting up early is brutal.
3/3/2018 12:48 PM
24 If they could schedule the college-wide sessions first, and then tell us when those are, so that wecan schedule our sessions at different times, that would be SO helpful. There's nothing worse thaninadvertently scheduling your Flex session during a Pathways or Accreditation meeting. Also, more online flex opportunities, and make them more visible/easy to sign up for. Maybe a listsomewhere on myCabrilloPD?
3/2/2018 2:39 PM
25 Perhaps more activities offered more than once, since overlapping activities is a big problem 3/2/2018 12:50 PM
26 Fewer, but longer deep dives. 3/2/2018 10:45 AM
27 Less days of flex, trade them for teaching days 3/1/2018 6:39 PM
28 We need a series of "How To" pages, to accomplish all the things that go with faculty work flow. These would be explicit worked examples, a cook-book basically. I make them all the time forthings I may only do once a year or once a semester, and forget. As in * do X, then * do Y, then *do Z, etc
2/28/2018 8:16 PM
29 Focus on pedagogy in higher education and adult learning. Have accomplished educators sharetheir best practices.
2/28/2018 5:37 PM
30 I love FLEX week. The problem I run into the most is wanting to go to two topics at the same time.I appreciate the variety in topics. That said, I wish we had more support for conferences in ourfields and support for part-timers to attend conferences.
2/28/2018 4:01 PM
31 Many meetings repeat the same info--in three different meetings I hear the same "hot topics".Those meetings are generally dept chair meeting; division meeting; cluster/dept meeting. It seemsredundant. I would appreciate more flex activities where you are actually accomplishing tasks thatyou need help with such as SLO Assessments; curriculum updating in curricunet or whicheversystem we may be using :) More hands-on flex activities where you come away with not justlearning but also creating/accomplishing (or at least taking the first steps towards accomplishing)the many tasks/job responsibilities we have. Maybe having some health and wellness activitiessuch (as stress management in the workplace) that are often offered on Fridays when our othermeetings are held.
2/28/2018 3:10 PM
32 I hate(d) College Day on the first day of Flex Week. I have too many things to get done to feel likeit was every energizing or helpful. I also hate how Flex Week has creeped into being a week and ahalf or two weeks before classes begin. I would LOVE to see lots of different ways through thesemester to earn flex credit--I have so many things to get done in Flex Week it becomes stressfulto attend activities and do everything else. I would love us all to do some service projects. I wouldlove us to visit local employers. Flex Fridays are difficult for me because I am not a teachingfaculty and so Friday is just another work day for me. Thanks!

34 The biggest stumbling block for me in FLEX week is the scheduling. I sometimes find that twoactivities I would like to attend meet at the same time. I think highly desirable activities (like GuidedPathways) should be scheduled in their own time slot without conflicts. I also think similar topics(such as general pedagogy and online pedagogy) should be taught in separate time slots. Toavoid overlap in FLEX week, perhaps some of the activities could be moved to FLEX Fridaysthroughout the semester (it seems that many Fridays in the term do not have activities but maybecould do).
2/28/2018 10:06 AM
35 More SUSTAINABILITY, more culturally responsive teaching, more PEDAGOGY and bestpractices!!!!
2/28/2018 9:58 AM
36 Flex Fridays good idea - spread it out through the year. Stuffing it all into the week before classstarts does not make for optimal learning/retention. Exhausting
2/28/2018 9:55 AM
37 they often happen at the same time as our dept meetings 2/28/2018 12:01 AM
38 I like the variety Flex week offers, with computer/technical workshops, department-specificworkshops, and general pedagogy/brain science workshops appropriate for all.
2/27/2018 11:23 PM
39 Too many conflicting activities. There are many regular housekeeping activities that are importanttouch stones during each flex week: Faculty Senate, DC meeting, SLO assessment, Watsonvilleorientation, etc. The "special" topic meetings often conflict or overlap with these. The PD "themes"are not especially helpful.
2/27/2018 10:07 PM
40 My department meeting was at night, which was difficult, as I am a single parent to a specialneeds child, so finding childcare isn't easy. So, I would say to make the department meetingsduring work hours when children are in school/care.

42 Could there be FLEX activities in the late afternoon or evening. Perhaps there already are and Iam unaware.

43 More time to share pedagogy with peers. 2/27/2018 6:54 PM
44 I teach Fridays and can never attend Flex Fridays. Could a flex Friday be repeated on a week-dayevening?
2/27/2018 6:42 PM
45 I am in favor of groups like Our Gang, where we went somewhere unrelated to our field, just for funand extraneous knowledge. When I was teaching (I'm in Student Services now) I often got ideasfor lessons in my field from some serendipitous experience.

2/27/2018 5:35 PM
50 Petl is dreadful 2/27/2018 5:30 PM
51 Too many offering are either for a specific department or are seemingly designed to draw you intoyet another committee that you don't have time to commit to
2/27/2018 5:27 PM
52 I feel like a lot of the things I go to are just meetings to share new information about the college orget a group of people caught up on a certain topic but very little is actually to teach me a new skill. It would be neat to have a teacher (one of our peers) who is adept at something (effective groupprojects, tying syllabi to student assessment, teaching online, effective classroom management)actually teach an "example class" there might need to be a planted "bad" student if it werebehavior based or they could actually go through a new class that is being created and talkthrough how you align assignments with student learning outcomes etc. If there is a way to makeit more interactive that would be great.
2/27/2018 5:26 PM
53 I teach Fridays without a break. It is impossible for me to attend anything on a Friday. 2/27/2018 5:18 PM
54 It should be easier to hold dept meeting as a flex Friday without it being on a designated Friday orneeding approval.

1 Monday through Thursdays (after 2pm) are best for me as I really need my Fridays to grade orelse I fall terribly behind. It's the only day of the week that I can grade without being interrupted. Ihave attended Friday workshops during the regular semester, but it's never ideal given my packedclasses and the amount of grading that I must do.
