The Music Academy at Southeast Missouri State University is dedicated to enrichingthe lives of its students by stimulating a lifelong appreciation of music. Its professional faculty offers musical instruction to students of all ages, abilities and backgrounds, and guides the development of basic musical and performing skills while encouraging the creative use of those skills. From birth through the retirement years, the Academy welcomes any student wishing to increase his or her musical knowledge and proficiency.

Who We AreFounded in 1985 with approximately 80 students, the Music Academy now has an average enrollment of more than 250 students per semester, representing the entire region. The Academy is part of the Southeast Missouri State University Department of Music and is located on the main campus in Brandt Hall. The Academy depends on student tuition and community sponsorship to fund it’s diverse programming. The Academy has met the requirements and is a full member of theNational Guild of Community Schools of the Arts.

PRIVATE LESSONSPrivate lessons are available for all band and orchestral instruments, piano, voice, classical guitar, organ, harp and composition.

SUZUKI STRINGSSuzuki Strings includes private and group lessons. It is based on the Talent Education method of music instruction and the premise that musical ability is not an inborn talent but an ability

that can be developed. The late Japanese educator Dr. Shinichi Suzuki noticed the ease with which young children learn

to speak their native languages. He believed educators could use this “mother tongue method” of listening,

imitating and repeating sounds to nurture a high level of musicality in young students. Students

age three and older are invited to apply for admission into the Suzuki program at the

Music Academy.

“Long after the toys of childhood are gone, the joy of music remains.”
