We collaborated with a 7th grade Reading class to learn how to locate, select, organize and properly cite images and sounds and develop ideas for public service announcements.

We collaborated on a World languages Unit with 7th grade World Languages classes to create travel brochures.

We worked with 7th Grade English classes to learn how to locate, select, organize and properly cite images and sounds for multimedia projects for a persuasive project with short stories.

We collected print an online resources for 8th grade Science research, 7th grade World Languages research, and 8th grade Holocaust research.

We investigated new ways to promote free reading among our classes through various special days and programs such as the Barnes and Noble Family Night Out Book Fair, Teen Read Week, and Silent Nights (Days) in the Library. Check our library blog for more details.

We instructed and trained teachers and students in the use and application of Windows Movie Maker, Zooburst, One Note, Power-searching in e-Library, the Flip video camera, Activotes, Advance Search research skills, Various Search Engines, website evaluation, copyright compliance, Creative Commons resources, Wordpress Blogs, Easybib and Picnik.

We continued to develop, implement, and moderate our new, interactive Byrd Books Blog which is not only used for book browsing and selection, but also as a reflection/assessment tool for students to share books they have read.

This year we are implementing lessons integrating RTI and our anti-bullying initiative including Rachel's Challenge (library, office, guidance aides).

As we reviewed our stats this month we noticed an increase in overall circulation .

All Digital Projectors were in service consistently throughout the month. Many teachers had to share as there were not enough projectors to keep up with the need.

Cameras, and speakers were consistently in use as evidenced through our check out records. A note was made to explore additional purchases of digital cameras.

The Flip cameras were consistently in use throughout the month.

Byrd Students - How many LEGOs will you donate to help us recognize October

In a partnership with our Movie Licensing, we offered a winter movie festival during the last week of school before break as they were finishing up Henrico 21 projects.

We had a Barnes and Noble Family Night Community Book Fair as well as our annual on-site Scholastic Book Fair and created promotional materials, managed a student street team who volunteered in all aspects of

the fair, facilitated contests and devised fun rewards and prizes, and hosted a student/staff basketball game.

We hosted 2 special guests through a special arrangement with the Virginia Holocaust Museum, Sonja and Bud Brodecki. They are an elderly couple who are among the very few of Richmond's Holocaust survivors (Bud is the ONLY survivor who has a tattoo on his arm with his assigned number), and shared their story with our 8th grade students. Our 8th grade students have just completed a novel study on Anne Frank, researched the time period through multimedia interactive stations, and are currently researching modern examples of intolerance/genocide to draw connections and consider solutions to share in personal projects. This was a powerful opportunity for our students to hear first-hand about this experience, and have the unique opportunity to ask questions to assist them in guiding their research. As a result, in Sonja’s own words, our students are now witnesses to their experience.

We underwent a migration of our online circulation system from a server-based system to a cloud based system. This required daily evaluation, communication and input with our centralized Library Services

department during the transitional period. As a team we also identified a county-wide problem area within our eLibrary platform, troubleshot possible solutions with our library technology person which resulted in a

resolution to the problem. This resolution allows us to better serve our school community by empowering

library users with a 24/7 virtual access to resources.

We hosted various county level meetings such as a CTE advisory board meeting.•We hosted a hot chocolate and cookies day for our student office, guidance and library aides.•We assisted with Rachel's Challenge initiative and related activities including a Lego collection and building project to benefit the Autism Society. The Autism Society of Central Virginia has started an Inclusive Lego

Club for children ages 5-14. As a school, Byrd came together to meet the challenge and help the Autism

We hosted our annual Talk Like a Pirate Day as we encouraged students to work ethically and take the pledge against plagiarism. Here is informational info that went out to all the teachers:

Good Afternoon!Or should we say, “Ahoy and Avast, Mateys!”

Talk Like A Pirate Day is fast approaching! What is TLAPD, ye say? ARRRRRGH! Why, it’s a fun day to celebrate the spirit of adventure, and talk with “pirattitude”! At Byrd, it is also a day when we remind the

students that it is NEVER a good idea to pirate another person’s work. It is considered plagiarism and it is a biggie in our HCPS Code of Conduct.

This year, Talk Like A Pirate Day falls on Monday, September 19, so we are busy with preparations to make this a fun day for all! Participation is strictly voluntary, but we hope everyone will come up with a simple

way to take part. Below you will find some links to great ideas on tying this into your content. Use one of these lesson plans or ideas, tweak one and use it as a jumping off point for your own idea, or simply talk

like a pirate all day and have a great time encouraging your students to loosen up, and get to know each

We will begin announcements on the rolly scrolly and the afternoon announcements on Friday to lead up to this day on Monday offering you a few lessons in pirattitude and vocabulary. Feel free to share the first link

below with your class to build interest and vocabulary in preparation for the big day.

Finally on the day of days, Monday, September 19, the library wenches will offer ye a treat (Arrrgh, now that’s more like it!) and some useful tools to deal with the serious side of piracy: PLAGIARISM.(Keep a look

out in yer inbox for THAT treasure!) We will also welcome one and to come through the library on Friday for treats and an opportunity to sign the Pledge Against Plagiarism.

Keep on the lookout for creative ways to have fun on this day with your students, and let us know if you have any questions, need some resources, or if you just want to practice talking like a pirate!

We hosted the James Patterson live webcast and invited students to attend and interact. Patterson talked about his book, Middle School: The Worst Years of My Life, his writing process, and the importance of reading.

All webcasts were archived, and we communicated with teachers on how to access and utilize these with their classes.

We held a Spooky Book Contest for students and teachers. Students completed a quick Google form to tell us about the scariest book they had ever read. Each entry gave them a chance to win a bag of spooky treats and books.

We held a Holiday Cheer Book Contest for students and teachers connecting to the book Wonderstruck, and continued our promotion of the book with an interactive post.

Byrd’s library hosted a Thriller Media Literacy Event on October 31st. We focused on media literacy and how it influences what we do, what we say, how we act, and how we create. 125 sixth grade students signed up to join us for a showing of the classic Michael Jackson’s Thriller video and discussion of how this video has shaped modern pop culture and influenced countless modern performers more than 25 years later. After the discussion, a recent graduate of HCPS assisted by one of our own upper classmen led our 6th grade participants in a fun re-do of the famous dance.

The Byrd Library Learning Commons has put together a reflective display in two parts-the first is to honor those Byrd staff members who have served in the military, and to provide resources for students and staff who want to read more about the military and our veterans. (pic1) The second part of the display is adapted from the book America’s White Table and is designed to be symbolic of many of the reasons why

adapted from the book America’s White Table and is designed to be symbolic of many of the reasons why this day is such an important part of the fabric of our culture, and to allow our school community to reflect on the concepts of service and sacrifice.(pic2) Students, faculty, and community were invited to come by the library to interact with the displays and expand their understanding of this special day.

We hosted Silent Nights(Days) in the Library for classes to sign up and enjoy cookies and silent reading by virtual fireplaces in the library.

We planned, organized and facilitated Laptop Deployment for all grade levels.

We collaborated on a whole school rewards program as part of our School Improvement Plan including lunch in the library, and Lego building

Mrs. Hyman presented the SEEK it tool at the countywide in-service for librarians.

Mrs. Hyman and Mrs. Jones presented a session on the SEEK-it tool and a session on selecting and integrating multimedia into collaborative lessons at the state VEMA (now VASSL) conference.

We requested and received various promotional displays to use in our library to promote literacy and events.

In response to budgetary cuts ,this month we continued to find creative ways to obtain new resources for our school:

We photographed various events and processed digital images for various staff.

We set up and facilitated laptop distribution for all three grade levels.

We hosted and worked to provide lunch in the library with a friend, and Lego tower building as bonus rewards for our School Improvement Plan's Game card Incentive.

WE set up and coordinated AV needs for a variety of school and county wide meetings.

Mrs. Hyman renovated the blog over the summer to update and rework the library website to make it easier to navigate and streamline the visual design. http://blogs.henrico.k12.va.us/byrdlibrary/

Mrs. Hyman completed and submitted an application for a grant for handheld camcorders. We also collaborated with our principal to write and submit a READ-design grant.

We worked with various teachers to train them in the use of applications to be used professionally and instructionally.

We participated in a fire drill and code blue drills with assistants and library patrons.

Created and aired videos to promote various features for the morning announcements.

Compiled, published and maintained the "Denial of Permission" forms for media.

Developed blurbs, took pictures, and submitted various media releases and public relations presentations for events happening at Byrd.

Training/Managing Student Aides : we continued to work with student aides to develop skills.

We processed overdue books and fines, and publicized the need to settle accounts in a variety of places.

We undertook an extensive inventory of the library collection which provided an opportunity to update, assess and align the collection more closely with core content needs.

Mrs. Hyman and several students were interviewed and featured as part of a video created to be aired at the ALA Conference in New Orleans.

Mrs. Hyman downloaded eBooks for the Nooks and trained students and staff in their use.

Our team set up for a variety of meetings including faculty meetings, lessons, presentations and assemblies.

Continued an extensive project to document and surplus damaged out of use equipment.

In addition to daily library related tasks such as processing books, Inter- Library Loans and holds, discards and repairs, collecting and processing fines and overdues, assisting with shelving and aide supervision, and various student and teacher assistance, our library assistant also handles school administrative requests(such as managing the gamecard, set up for principal's coffee), and school needs (such as managing and creating a bulletin board calendar of events, school fees receipting).
