was the recurring “serials,” always with a cliff-hanger ending to be resolved the next week, and a huge disappointment if you couldn’t attend. Favorites were “Jungle Girls,” “Perils of Nyoka,” and “Jungle Drums.” In later years, dad worked there as ticket seller/taker, which aided my attendance record. As kids, we looked forward to getting old enough to “graduate” past row 12 at the Hollywood, where the designers had placed double wide seats at the end of each row, for “cuddlers”? Tickets were “two for a quarter and bring a penny home.”

Our next living change was a move in 1943, from Center Street in Greentown to 762 Center Street “in town.” Amusing how such a small event could actually create a feeling of really belonging — in school, church, town activities. Central plumbing and water, furnace in the basement, walking distance to everything and no more bus rides — these were the real, practical benefits of the move. It was now a six-block walk to the grade school, and later four blocks to the high school building. No longer did we go to Grandpa Silver’s place after school to wait for Dad to take us home. We were actually old enough to go to St. Mary’s Catholic Church for mass or Sunday school by ourselves and very soon, for cause, allowed to roam the city.

We now lived at the intersection of North Center Street and Highway 14, across from the small, triangular city park which would later hold the tornado memorial tree, and second

in a row of four similar concrete block houses built in the 1920s. Behind us were the Aarthun family, car dealer. The Herman Langpaps lived on the corner, then Ray and Faye Hatch, with sons Dale and Robert, and on the other side over the years were Carl Phillopson, with daughters Mary Lou and Judith; Armand and Alice Elson, with Lois, David and Virginia; Marvin and Marion Vincent, and son Floyd. South of them was a large corner ‘vacant lot,’ which probably actually comprised five or six lots, and was the site of pickup ball games, races, snowball fights and war games for kids from the whole NE corner of town for many years.

Like most folks, we had an icebox in the back entryway, wringer-washer in the basement and clotheslines strung across the back—no fancy washer/dryer in those days, and a large ‘Victory’ garden to provide summer vegetables.

There were two small bedrooms shared by my sisters with a double bed, and brother Jerry and me in bunk beds bought from Byron Sweeley for $15. The basement was crowded with dad’s work bench and tools, a storage area for paint, wallpaper supplies and equipment, and an empty concrete cistern space which mom converted to a cool storage for canned goods. The semiannual change of screens and storm windows, raking the fall leaves, shoveling the driveway and pulling the garden weeds became normal chores.

Sheriff, Tracy enter ‘mutual aid’ agreement

The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office and the City of Tracy officially entered into a law enforcement mutual aid agree-ment on Tuesday.

The City of Tracy ap-proached the sheriff’s office, asking to enter into a mutual aid agreement.

The new agreement was pat-terned after the one currently in force between the City of Marshall and Lyon County.

The Lyon County Attorney Rick Maes has reviewed the contract. The Tracy City Coun-cil had approved the agree-ment at a recent city council meeting.

• In other sheriff-related ac-tion, the Lyon County Sheriff’s office was named as one of 67 counties with an interest in participating in the Off High-way Vehicle (OHV) Enforce-ment Grant Program.

The county will receive $5,927 each year for 2020 and 2021 for the sheriff’s office to use for Off Vehicle education and equipment purchase.

The board approved the grant with the Department of Natural Resources. It will be effective until June 30, 2021.

The board also accepted a jail food service proposal from Summit Food Service to pro-vide inmate meals to the Lyon County Enforcement Center. “It’s very similar to the current contract we have,” said Sheriff Eric Wallen.

The contract will provide service through Dec. 31, 2024.

Wallen also asked for and received board permission to participate in an improved 911 system called, “Next Genera-tion 911.”

The county is mandated to provide GIS data to the state for completion of the project. Lyon County has been award-ed $19,972 to complete the project.

“We are a regional receiv-ing center for the area,” said Wallen. “For Lyon County, the grant would reimburse wages up to the allotted amount for the preparation of the desired data.”

In other action, the board:• Heard from Minnesota

Partnership Specialist Jim Ac-curso of the U. S. Census Bu-reau. Every 10 years the U. S. Government conducts a cen-sus of the county’s population.

“We’re encouraging you to get the word out to county residents,” Accurso said. He said he’s seeking a partnership with local governments to ob-tain a complete and accurate census count.

“We would appreciate if you become a liaison with us as we go forward,” said Accurso. “Our goal is to count everyone once and only once. We don’t want to count anyone twice,” he added.

• Hired Larry Hanson as a part-time deputy to start around Oct. 1 at a starting wage of $23.27 per hour.

• Accepted the resignation of Sherri Kitchenmaster as Lyon County Assessor.

• Approved the 2020 pre-liminary levy at 2.2 percent. That number hasn’t changed since the last meeting.
