SWANSEA UNIVERSITY / PRIFYSGOL ABERTAWE Swansea University is a research-led institution that has contributed to the transformation of Swansea as a city of distinction since 1920. The University community thrives on exploration and discovery, and offers a compelling balance of excellent teaching and research, matched by an enviable quality of life. More recently, the University has enjoyed a period of tremendous growth, and we have achieved our ambition to be a top thirty research University, soaring up the 2014 Research Excellence Framework league table from 52nd in 2008 to 26th in the UK in 2014.

Additionally, the university is the home of the largest knowledge economy project in the UK, the Bay Campus, one of the top five major infrastructure investments in Europe. This new £450 million development on the eastern approach to the city with direct beach access, together with the transformation of our existing Singleton Park Campus, signals our intention to be one of the finest places to live, teach, research and collaborate in Europe.

Swansea's multicultural dual-campus community provides a global perspective and opportunities to gain skills that last a lifetime. True to the vision of its industrial founders in 1920, Swansea University will:

Provide an environment of research excellence, with research that is world-leading, globally collaborative and internationally recognised;

THE COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING The College of Engineering is ranked 10th in the UK for the combined score in research quality across the Engineering disciplines (REF 2014). Our research environment was ranked 2nd (behind Cambridge).

Academic staff are organised into four key Research Centres (Systems and Process Engineering Centre (SPEC), Zienkiewicz Centre for Computational Engineering (ZCCE), Materials Research Centre (MRC), and Applied Sports, Technology, Exercise and Medicine (A-STEM)), a Centre for Learning and Teaching Enhancement and a Centre for Innovation and Engagement and are supported by a team of over 100 professional service staff.

The College has undergone a very significant period of transformative growth and development in recent years, including doubling student and staff numbers, raising our international research profile, significantly increasing its research grant income and portfolio, and moving to a new purpose built campus in 2015.

The Bay Campus is part of a £450 million development project at Swansea University housing a range of academic areas with high quality student accommodation, teaching and research spaces.

The five new 30,000 m2 College of Engineering buildings include £100M investment in purpose built facilities. Two further Engineering buildings are currently in construction; IMPACT and the Active Office.

The College delivers a wide range of high-quality undergraduate and postgraduate courses. All of our degree schemes are accredited by the relevant professional institution and we consistently achieve good student satisfaction and high employability through the delivery of high quality, inspiring research-led teaching across the subject areas. Swansea University was awarded TEF Gold in recognition of its outstanding teaching.

Zienkiewicz Centre for Computational Engineering Zienkiewicz Centre for Computational Engineering (ZCCE) is the multidisciplinary engineering centre that currently consists of six research groups. This centre is internationally well known for its innovative computational research in different areas of engineering including aerospace, process industries, manufacturing and recently in biomedical engineering. The origin of the centre is linked to the father of the finite element method, late Professor O.C. Zienkiewicz. This centre is now home to nearly fifty highly qualified academics of international excellence. They include a Fellow of Royal Society, Four Fellows of Royal Academy of Engineering and members of various international and other national academies. The centre is also home of to a large number of PGR students, independent research fellows and research assistants.

The centre is known for iconic projects such as supersonic car projects including THRUST SSC and Bloodhound. While computational modelling is at the heart of the centre, it also encourages close collaboration with experimental researchers in various areas of engineering. The current programmes of interest to the centre include the development of the open source platform swansim.org and centre’s annual public lecture. The Zienkiewicz Lecture speakers of the past include Professor Dame Anne Dowling and Professor Lord Bhattacharya. The facilities of the centre include an in-house computer cluster and access to large scale computing facilities across the Swansea University campus. Currently, ZCCE has a running grant of over £20m from EPSRC, EU and industries.

BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING The Biomedical Engineering group within this research centre is a young, dynamic group with strong links to hospitals and industries, in the UK and abroad. It currently consists of eight academic members of staff, including an EPSRC manufacturing fellow and UKRI innovation fellow. The group oversees the successful international conference entitled Computational and Mathematical Biomedical Engineering. One of the top journals in the field, International Journal for Numerical Methods in Biomedical Engineering, is edited by one of the members of this group. The group also has extensive collaborations with researchers in the UK, and with a large number of international academics.
