In construction everything moves. All buildings and their structural elements are subject to pressures that cause movements, deformations and geometrical changes.

1. WHAT ARE EXPANSION JOINTS?

With the aim of controlling and preventing these internal tensions, medium-sized and large buildings are built in blocks, so that each of these blocks operates independently and does not knock against the block next to it.Between these blocks, spaces are reserved for the expansion joints. The placement and opening of these joints are determined by the estimator or structural engineers, who will also determine the load capacity that the joint must bear.

An expansion joint is an opening that pierces the entire construction: floors, walls, façades and roofs.The structural expansion joints absorb and accompany the buildings’ movements to control and prevent cracking. They also enable isolation of the joins between different structural elements, including walls, machinery foundations, drains and so on, avoiding the transmission of tensions between them.Doing away with expansion joints, using an unsuitable joint system or distributing joints incorrectly can encourage the appearance of all kinds of pathology in the building’s structure and finishes which, once works are terminated, will be difficult to solve and mean high maintenance costs.

In contrast, correctly resolving the most critical joins and flashing on a site is the mark of a good project.Expansion joint profiles are applied in airports, shopping centres, hospitals, schools, parking facilities, industrial buildings and factories. They consist of metal profiles (aluminium, steel, stainless steel, etc.), generally joined by rubber inserts, and covering the openings to allow movement in the blocks without causing damage to the cement or cladding.

• Variations in temperature of the environment.

• Expansions generated from the contraction of the different construction materials.

• Settlement and movement of the terrain

• Seismic movement

• The weight of the buildings themselves and their use.

• Wind pressure.

• Loads and traffic.

THESE PRESSURES STEM FROM THE FOLLOWING CAUSES:

The Novojunta Pro® series by Emac® enables expansion joints to act without interfering with structural movements. This is a complete range of profile systems conceived to absorb the different movement types and avoid the appearance of cracks and other pathologies, thereby extending the useful life of structures.They can be installed with all types of material: porcelain, concrete, terrazo, granite, marble and other stone.

Furthermore, they can be complemented with watertight bands to avoid leaks, dampness and dirt, as well as using firestop systems that stop the passage of fire and smoke.All the trials we carry out, we do so in independent technological institutes belonging to the redIT of the Valencian Community.

According to their movement capacity, expansion joints are divided into”thermal” and”seismic”.Thermal joints: are those that admit the expansion of the construction elements themselves. Habitually these joints do not surpass 50 mm (1.97”) joint widths and expansions of +/- 10 mm (0.39”)Seismic joints: as a general rule, seismic joints are classed as those that have a multi-directional expansion capacity of at least 25% of the width of the joint in each horizontal direction. For example, in the case of a joint 50 mm (1.97”) wide, in order to class it as a joint with seismic capacity, it must have an expansion of at least +/- 12.5 mm (0.49”).Furthermore, these joints must have enough resistance not to deform with the traffic borne andalso span the distance between blocks with enough rigidity. It is advisable to install joints that are all metal.

2. SEISMIC JOINTSSeismic danger or the destructive potential of earthquakes is determined by four conditions according to Bertero (1992):

• Earthquake severity, its magnitude. The movement induced in the terrain which will affect the constructions.

• The seismic source and its distance.

• The size, distribution and economic development of the towns affected.

• Preparation against the earthquake, understood as the population’s degree of response and the prevention measures that are taken against the chance of an earthquake.

Against the phenomenon of earthquakes, construction plays a fundamental role to guarantee the safety and stability of buildings. This is especially important in those which are necessary for the population’s survival, such as hospitals, fire stations, etc. Countries such as Japan, the USA or Chile have developed highly demanding standards so that buildings overcome seismic activity without failure or collapse.

At a European level, we find references to seismic aspects in the Eurocode 8: Design of structures for earthquake resistance, which indicates requirements such as uniformity and symmetry for constructions, to improve their response to seismic activity. So a cubic design of buildings is recommended, without irregular geometries, and uniformity can be achieved by subdividing the building using seismic joints.

We can classify constructions according to their importance into three types:

The last group includes hospitals, communications buildings (radio, television, telecommunications centres), buildings for organisation and coordination, buildings for rescue personnel and equipment (fire fighters, police, armed forces, machinery and ambulance parks), basic utilities (water tanks, gas, fuels, pump centres, electrical power plants), airports, public performance buildings, large shopping centres and special constructions such as nuclear power plants, dams and places where dangerous substances are stored.

Each construction must be separated from its adjacent buildings by a minimum distance to mitigate the shock effects during seismic movements. These required minimum separation values are established. The joints between the bodies of buildings must have at least a width corresponding to the sum of the maximum lateral displacements of the two bodies. The joints must be situated at a maximum distance of 40 m (43 yd).

• Constructions of moderate importance: those buildings whose destruction by an earthquake would have little probability of causing victims.

• Constructions of normal importance: buildings whose destruction could cause victims, but which is not a building containing essential services in the event of a catastrophe.

• Constructions of special importance: buildings whose destruction could cause a large number of victims or interrupt an essential service.

FIRESTOP JOINTS uOur firestop joint systems ensure a hermetic seal against flames and hot or inflammable gases, avoiding any chimney effect among construction elements, both horizontally and vertically.The joints must ensure a degree of fire barrier protection that at least equals the protection on the works for which they are destined.The combination between mastic, firestop cord and the different finishing systems on joints enables between 2 and 4 hours of fire protection to be achieved.Our firestop joint systems have surpassed CSTB trials, which certify the duration of isolation of flames and hot gases, as well as thermal insulation.

1. Attach the profiles with some dabs of concrete every 60-80 cm (25-30”).2. Level and finish attachment leaving the upper third closest to the vertex free.3. Cut the intersections using a mitre block and hacksaw to ensure the vertices coincide perfectly.4. Do not place dabs of concrete at the intersections. The closest must be 20- 25 cm (8-10”) away.5. The profiles are simply joined by inserting a rod or corrugated wire into the gaps in the joints.6. Concrete pouring: pour either traditionally or by pumping.7. Straight-edging and floating: do the straight-edging manually and then use the concrete vibrator. This process avoids deterioration of the joint.8. • Arrow-shaped fractioning and expansion joint, designed to be installed in conjunction with thick paving.

• It consists of two metal profiles and a central body of EPDM micro-cellular rubber, with an excellent capacity for

absorbing the contractions and expansions of the paving.

• Available in shiny stainless steel, or in matt silver anodised or natural aluminium.

• This movement joint is highly decorative, since it has a beautifying membrane on its visible face that masks the

inner EPDM body.

• Especially for installing paving using traditional mortar. We recommend installing it slightly below the level of the

paving, to enable the floor to be polished.

• Profiles supplied in standard lengths of 2.5 m (98.4”).• Supplied with protective film on the visible face.
