Lack of spectrum delays LTE adoption in East Africa The East African region is an important telecoms market contributing over 11% of Africa’s total mobile subscriptions. By end-3Q13, the region comprising Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda and Burundi had 88 million mobile subscribers and a penetration rate of 57%. The mobile market is dominated by GSM and 3G/3G+ technologies. The take-up of LTE services has been comparatively slow as customer demands for mobile data speeds are already being met by the existing 3G/3G+ networks. The number of 3G subscriptions in the region remains relatively low. The delay in the analog-to-digital- TV migration has affected the launch LTE networks due to lack of the spectrum. Tanzania is the only country in that has successfully migrated to a digital TV platform.
