Austin is renown for its music scene, but is becoming increasingly popular these days for its creative class; the city is practically made up of “indie, do-it-yourself-ers”. One of the country’s most progressive techie, indie-music and film conferences, SXSW, bears witness to this, drawing more than 200,000 people each year. You’re in the right place, at the right time. Austin, along with other cities you’ve connected with, like Denver, is the perfect mixture of innovation and incubation for the NEW School for Women. We’ll tour and chat with businesses that are part of your industry, brainstorm and strategize, eat, play, sleep and relax -- all while getting down to business. Ready? Let’s go!

small business. BIG technology. One of your primary goals with NEW School for Women and NEW Enterprises is freedom and flexibility. You want to be able to travel at the drop of a dime from one country to the next, while remaining productive. You’ve got a lot of good ingredients: marketable idea, sincere passion to see it through and a decent amount of time to devote. Startup capital, though, can leave you juggling time between your dream and your job. That’s why small startups like yours depend on seed investment. Your idea needs to be cultivated with 150% of your attention so that it can ultimately launch in a big way. But doing what you can, with what you have is the name of the game. So, how can we make this work for you, for real?

Involve yourself in the techie community Put yourself on all the email lists and subscribe to all the blogs that feature the latest news on new developments and launches in the mobile technology, web 2.0 and social media industries. The success of your business will depend on it.

It looks nice, but does it work? The best way for your small business to make a big impact, attract and retain the customers you want, while keeping the primary goal of remaining free and flexible in tact -- is mobile technology. Knowing the currents and who’s who will help you to continue to think ahead of the curve, so that your online school can be ahead of the curve. When devising strategies for your school and program, think user experience, ease of use, accessibility and truly bridging a gap between your student and the learning material they need. Don’t make it hard for your customers to subscribe, spend money and advocate your brand. Good looks will only take you so far. It has to work, where ever they are, with just about any device they’re using.

We’ll have the opportunity to sit with one of Google’s Glass® engineers to soak up some knowledge on how entrepreneurs must fuse technology, into their brand, if they are going to survive and excel.

Go beyond You’ve got a list of people who you refer to for ideas. But what can you develop, that truly pushes the boundaries in e-learning? Stay tuned! We’ll discuss this at Wednesday’s lunch.

Something NEWCongratulations on NEW School for Women! In just the few short months that we’ve pre-launched NSW, I’m sure you can tell that the only way to the top, is by climbing.

You have a unique idea. Providing sound, current, educational and progressive e-learning environments for a generally underserved market. This is where you can truly stand apart from the pact. Niches. Embrace that word -- it’s what makes the best, the best. Refraining from trying to be everything to everyone is a sure fire way to keep costs down, gain the loyalty of the customers you want, and keep hair on your head.

We’ll visit Hopdoddy, a popular burger and beer joint in Austin. Their menu? Burgers and beers. And while this doesn’t sound so fancy, it actually is! Unlike chain restaurants that undoubtedly serve burgers and beers, an American food staple, Hopdoddy does it differently. Their niche incorporates a simple, but delicious menu, with animal and environment consciousness, and a dab of superb customer dining experience. It’s not just creating a good dish, and saying “we’re the best at it.” Anyone can duplicate that business model. It’s creating something -- an x-factor, that keeps people wanting to experience it again, and again; invite friends and Facebook or Yelp about it. That model can’t be duplicated. Your goal should be indispensability.

The Business of Co-Working The women you’re recruiting for NSW and the women you coach need space to work. Since spending time at Link Co-Working, how do you see yourself running a co-working space, just for women? What is your niche, and how can you create an experience that these women have to incorporate into their lives, and want to tell friends and colleagues about?

The formula. Hold your ear close to the blogs, forums and magazines of Black women. Listen to what they have to say about their relative challenges. Connect this problem, with your passion and viola! You’ve got something that’ll stick. This combination works -- together. If you’re not solving a problem, you’re not attracting customers. If you’re not passionate about it, you’ll hate it after 2 years. Spend some time on this. Get it right. Then launch.

“I hope you enjoyed your time at Link Co-working of Austin! Liz runs a neat operation, right?

This is your calling. Discovering the inner greatness in women, and pushing the boundaries of what is possible, acceptable and even normal oozes out of your pores. It’s in your speech. Your 2 a.m. emails. Your soul.

I didn’t book this fabulous lakefront resort to paint a pretty picture of how easy it’s going to be. We’re here so that you can clear your head, see what’s really available to you -- which is everything -- and accept, or decline, the uphill journey to obtaining it.

When I first turned over the proverbial “Yes! We’re Open” sign for my business back in 2006, it was an exciting, but frightful time in my life. Who’s going to call me? Who will let me provide services, for a fee? How do I invoice and accept payments? Who’s going to help me? Those questions circled my thoughts when I woke up every morning, and when I went to bed at night. I bet you’re wondering, “Who’s going to register for my classes? What if it doesn’t work?” And all of this is completely normal.

There are strategies and there are calendars. We can put plans into action, and deadlines on the books, but none of it is certain. My best advice is to work what you have in your hands, to the bone. Persevere. Enjoy the process. Change what needs to be changed, as often as possible and fail quickly. Success is solely up to you. YOU can do it!
