Candace J. Heisler served as an Assistant District Attorney for the City and County of San Francisco for over 25 years. During her career, she headed the Domestic Violence, Charging, Misdemeanor, and Preliminary Hearing Units. She served as the first Chairperson of the California District Attorneys Association Domestic Violence Committee. Candace has edited judicial curricula and a prosecutors’ manual on Domestic Violence. She helped develop and test curricula on Elder Abuse for judges, victim advocates and has helped develop numerous courses and tele-courses for California law enforcement on these topics. Heisler currently provides law enforcement training on Domestic Violence for first responders and investigators throughout California. She also serves an Assistant Adjunct Professor of Law at the University of California’s Hastings College from which she received her Juris Doctor degree. Harry E. Morgan, M.D., President of The Center for Geriatric and Family Psychiatry, Inc. Harry E. Morgan, M.D., has developed and is President of The Center for Geriatric and Family Psychiatry, Inc., located in Glastonbury, Connecticut. The practice is a unique multidisciplinary professional group committed to providing for the mental health care needs of the elderly and their families. Dr. Morgan is a member of the active psychiatric staff at the Institute of Living/Hartford Hospital, the Masonic Health Center, and is an Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of Connecticut Health Center. He is the Psychiatrist for the Southington Healthcare Alliance. He is an active Psychiatric Consultant to many agencies, care facilities, and homecare organizations. Dr. Morgan is Board Certified in Geriatric Psychiatry. Dr. Morgan’s clinical work with patients and families occurs in the office, in long term care facilities, and in patient’s homes. Dr. Morgan received his B.A. Degree from Dartmouth College. He obtained his M.D. degree from Harvard Medical School and completed his psychiatric residency at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center. Tim Huesgen, Lead Investigator, Division of Senior and Disability Services, Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services Tim Huesgen has worked for the state of Missouri for 30 years, with 18 years of investigative experience with the Department of Corrections (criminal and internal); 5 years as an investigator of elder abuse for the Department of Health and Senior Services Special Investigations Unit (SIU); and 2 years as Lead Investigator for the SIU. Thomas M. Meuser, Ph.D Thomas M. Meuser, Ph.D., is a Clinical Psychologist with specialized training in Geropsychology, and he serves as the Director of the Gerontology Graduate Program in the School of Social Work at the University of Missouri – St. Louis (UMSL). This was a new position for Dr. Meuser in 2007. He is an Associate Professor of Social Work and Gerontology at UMSL, and his position involves a mix of administration, graduate teaching, community outreach, and research. Dr. Meuser also holds a secondary faculty appointment in Psychology. Dr. Meuser earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology in 1986 from the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts, and his Doctorate in Clinical Psychology in 1996-7 from the University of Missouri – St. Louis. His research interests include loss and grief in aging and dementia, coping and communication issues in dementia caregiving, the impact of aging and dementia on functional capacity (e.g., driving ability., mobility), educational program development and evaluation, and psychotherapeutic intervention. Marla Berg-Weger, Ph.D., LCSW Marla Berg-Weger, Ph.D., LCSW, is a Professor and Director of Field Education at the Saint Louis University School of Social Work and a Fellow in the Gerontological Society of America. Her scholarly work has focused on aging, family caregiving and social work practice. She has authored four books and over thirty book chapters and journal articles in these areas. She is a member of an interprofessional team focused on research and education in the area of older adult mobility and driving. Marla is a past president of the Association for Gerontology Education in Social Work and current Secretary of the AGE SW Board of Directors.

She holds the named position of University Hospital Professor of Nursing and has an appointment as Professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine in the MU School of Medicine. A leader in the area of long-term care research, Dr. Rantz is currently serving as the Principal Investigator for "Multilevel Interventions to Improve Nursing Home Outcomes". This 2005 National Institutes of Health award was the largest ever given to a researcher at the Sinclair School of Nursing. Much of this research is being conducted at TigerPlace, an assisted living facility that is a joint venture between the Sinclair School of Nursing and the Americare Corporation. Dr. Rantz was part of the School of Nursing team who worked on the original design for TigerPlace, and today is the School's Director for the facility. Although rarely discussed, older adult depression is a widespread phenomenon creating skyrocketing Medicare costs, increasing disability, and resulting in the highest suicide rates of any population. Healthy IDEAS and PEARLS are SAMSHA recognized Best Practices for the treatment of depression in Seniors. This presentation will describe both Healthy IDEAS and PEARLS and how they are used, as well as how agencies can become trained in this treatment modality. We will also discuss signs and symptoms of Depression in Older Adults. (Immunizations) Presenters in this workshop will discuss the risks and burden of vaccine preventable diseases in the adult population and the vaccines to protect them. Noon – 1:15 - Lunch Innovative Ideas Awards; Ms. Senior Missouri, Peggy Eggert 1:30 – 2:45 – Concurrent Workshops Domestic Violence in Older Women: Responding to Their Needs As the baby boomer generation ages, domestic violence in older women will become a growing problem. While sharing some similarities, the needs of abused older women are most often different compared to those of younger women. Meeting the needs of older women who experience domestic violence poses significant challenges and carries unique implications for those who provide support services, make decisions about availability and access to community resources, and family and friends who seek help. Presenter: Linda Garner, RN, PhD, CHES -- Dr. Linda Garner has served for the past 8 years as the Executive Director of a domestic violence agency in southeast Missouri. Early Identification of Alzheimer’s (1.25 Patient Care CEU Credits) This presentation showcases the Administration on Aging grant funded partnership between the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, Missouri Area Agencies on Aging and the Missouri coalition of Alzheimer’s Association chapters in developing a web-based statewide identification and referral system to identify and guide those experiencing cognitive impairment who have not sought medical evaluation and/or are not fully utilizing supportive services and provide them with tools to increase their ability to cope with the disease. Hidden Treasure: USDA Rural Development Resources In this session, participants will be given an opportunity to create a list of their individual needs as well as the needs of their community to support healthy lifestyles for seniors. These lists will be assembled into a summary list from all the session participants. Then a discussion of USDA Rural Development funding streams appropriate to seniors will be provided. Each participant will receive a worksheet so they can note which USDA Rural development funding stream will be worth pursuing in more detail. A map showing local ZUSDA RD staff and their contact information will be distributed during the session. The session will conclude by looking at needs that USDA RD can’t fund and encourage participants to brainstorm funding resources they have used (or could use) to help meet those needs. Presenter: John R. Gulick, Community Planning and development Specialist, USDA Rural Development What? How? When?... Board Development (1.5 Administrative CEU Credits) Boards can be the biggest asset to an organization or the biggest challenge. To create a productive and engaged board you have to get the right people involved, they have to be well trained, and have productive meetings. This session will provide insight to each of those areas. Participants will receive samples of: board grids, orientation material, agenda templates, job descriptions, meeting evaluations and links to web resources. Presenter – Jessica Macy is the Executive Director at Boone County Council on Aging, a non-profit organization that keeps seniors living with independence and dignity in the community. This module will focus on the specific tasks and strategies to build rapport, assess readiness in context, and begin working toward mobility change and solution-focused planning. 2:45 – 3:00 – Break 3:00 – 4:15 – Concurrent Workshops Interviewing Older Adults about Sensitive Subjects (1.25 Administrative CEU Credits) Interviewing older victims of abuse can be difficult and require considerable skill and patience by the interviewer. The interview and interview process may be challenged in court or recanted by the witness. Victims may be legally incompetent, minimize what has happened, or protective of their abusers. In other cases, witnesses may be forthcoming, but their information doubted because of questions about their capacity or assumptions about them related to their age. Success in discovering the facts, developing evidence, identifying witnesses, succeeding in court, and protecting the victim from further abuse may all depend on the interviewer’s effectiveness. This workshop will describe elements of an effective interview, address logistical considerations, and discuss helpful approaches and questions to use when conducting an interview. Presenter: Candace J. Heisler, JD Care Transitions vs. Discharge Disasters: Stopping the Revolving Door (1.25 Administrative CEU Credits) Experts and practitioners will involve the audience in a lively discussion of strategies that decrease negative health outcomes for Missouri’s elders by enhancing transitional care and support services that bridge home, hospital and long term care. Presenters: Janis McGillick, MA (SW), LNHA, Education Director, Alzheimer’s Association- St. Louis Chapter; Maggie Murphy-White, MA, Family Education & Hospital Initiative Coordinator, Alzheimer’s Association- St. Louis Chapter The Silent Epidemic: HIV, STDs and HCV Among Older Adults Missourians in older age groups are generally healthier and are living longer than in the recent past. Higher levels of routine life activities result, inclusive of sex. As more older adults reenter the dating and relationship scene, the realization of an entire generation with very little knowledge or awareness about HIV and STD;s causes concern.

This presentation will offer an introduction to the Missouri Seniors Legal Helpline, which consist of a phone line and an online system. The project is the result of a grant awarded to Missouri by the Administration on Aging for the coordination and enhancement of legal services. Discussion will include information regarding the collaborative effort of the aging and legal communities to develop a sustainable project to address the legal needs of seniors. The who, what, where, when and why of the HelpLine will be addressed. Communicating information on how the system can be utilized to assist seniors seeking legal information or professional legal advice is the goal of the presentation.
