Background: Buoc-village is a small village of Thai-people (an ethnic group came from southern
of China) with very pure landscape. As you can see on the above map, this area is placed by only
green color and a lot of mountain. Because of this natural condition, Thai-people here rely mainly
on agriculture. In the past, the village was located adjacent to streams and people in the village
used water of the stream for gardening. During the rainy season water from the mountain goes
down through the streams and washes everything away, making it very dangerous to live close to
the stream. For this reason, the government has helped residents here to move to higher lands, and
build permanent \traditional houses with wood. 10 years have passed since the new BUOC-village
was reconstructed in 2002. Currently, firm houses, concrete roads, electricity have become the
basic-living-condition of every villager. Although the stream is very beautiful it is dangerous.
Despite the good aspects of new infrastructure, villagers still lack a lot of education and
understanding about modern society. Therefore, it would be very helpful to help and stay with
BUOC-villagers.
Work: Help local people to garden and repair traditional houses (if needed), organize leisure activities
for their children and cultural exchange with the villagers.
Location: Buoc village, Hoa Binh city.
Terminal: Noi Bai International Airport (HAN)
Accommodation and food: Volunteers will stay together in the bamboo house; western toilets and
bath room are available. Meals are normally served by the local people with the help of volunteers.
Remarks: Sleeping bag, sleeping mat, pillow, prove-water clothes, raincoat, info materials, pictures,
specialties and traditional clothes of your country, you are encouraged to bring along small gifts for
the local people and the children and volunteers of your camp.

Background: Cat Ba is the largest of the 366 islands spanning 260km2 that comprise the Cat Ba
Archipelago, which makes up the southeastern edge of Ha Long Bay in Northern Vietnam.
Cat Ba is the largest island in the Bay and approximately half of its area is covered by a National Park,
which is home to the highly endangered Cat Ba Langur. The island has a wide variety of natural
ecosystems, both marine and terrestrial, leading to incredibly high rates of biodiversity. Types of
natural habitats found on Cat Ba Archipelago include limestone karsts, tropical limestone forests, coral
reefs, mangrove and sea grass beds, lagoons, beaches, caves, and willow swamp forests.
For all of its natural beauty, Cat Ba Island faces numerous environmental problems. Increases in
tourism and recent developments threaten the ecological integrity and biodiversity of the island,
reducing and fragmenting the natural habitat for Cat Ba's numerous species. Illegal hunting and
poaching, overfishing, and water pollution in Ha Long Bay continue to threaten the ecological health
of the island. The island is a national park of Vietnam and was recognized by UNESCO in December
2004 as a Biosphere reserve of the world.
Work: Take care, feed the wild animal (crocodile, monkey, deer…), do gardening at the project site.
Organize activities for the children from the village nearby, small renovation at school if needed,
activities to raise awareness of youth and local people about environment, climate change, protect
white-headed langur at Cat Ba National park...etc
Location: Cat Ba island, Hai Phong city.
Terminal: Noi Bai International Airport (HAN)
Accommodation and food: Volunteers will stay inside the tourism center, within a very basic
condition. A shared room for all.
Remarks: Flash light, sleeping bag, prove-water clothes, raincoat, gift from your country for host-
family, toys and learning materials for the children if you have.

Background: Since the Youth Centre project was launched 9 years ago SJ Vietnam has succeeded in
meeting their first target goals due to the support of our local and international partners and endless
hard work of our coordinators and volunteers.
SJ Vietnam had sent most of the disadvantaged, poor and street children to public school and
vocational school where they can acquire a proper education and get integrated into the society.
Nevertheless the school fees, provided entirely by SJ Vietnam, are rather expensive and need to be
covered. SJ Vietnam will therefore continue to provide education to the children staying at the Youth
Center but will also participate to activities to raise funds to cover the children school fees. The Centre
demonstrates the important role of volunteerism and public-private partnerships in social development.
Our general aspirations: gathering together to establish this center for disadvantaged, poor and street
children; create a space for people to exchange ideas, have a chance to study vocational skills and to
be integrated in the community. We also want this center to be a place for Vietnamese youth to
exchange their knowledge, experience and culture with international volunteers via workshops and
everyday exchange. The Youth House school has now become a Youth center.
Work: Organize activities for disadvantaged children who live illegally in the Red river and at the
school nearby Youth center.
Accommodation and food: Volunteers will sleep in volunteer’s house at SJ Vietnams office. Meals
are at local restaurant. Volunteers will have lunch at the Youth center with children and the other
volunteers.
Location: Hanoi
Terminal: Noi Bai Airport (HAN)
Remarks: Sleeping bag; sleeping mat. Toys for kids are appreciated as well.

SJV1614 09/08-20/08 KID/RENO/SOC/CUL Vols: 15
Background: Giao Xuan is one of the poor villages in Nam Dinh province. Villagers’ lives are
associated with sea including salt production, marine aquaculture. This hard work depends on the
weather; therefore, villagers face many difficulties for their lives. More than 90% of the villagers
are poor farmers and fishers, which makes them difficult to build good facilities for children in the
village. Giao Xuan kindergarten is not an exception. The kindergarten was established in August,
1990. Experiencing 25 years, it is now in a bad condition such as cracked and moldy walls, leaky
ceiling. However, there are still more than 100 children coming to this school every week.
Although this is the only school of the commune, the living conditions of the children here are
very poor and are in need of renovation.
Work: Help to paint the rooms at kindergartens; organize games and leisure activities for the poor
children; teach basic English through games, activities, songs…
Location: Giao Thuy commune, Nam Dinh province, 150 km from Ha Noi.
Terminal: Noi Bai International Airport (HAN)
Accommodation and food: Volunteers will stay with the host families. Meals are self-prepared.
Remarks: Flash light, sleeping bag, prove-water clothes, raincoat, gift from your country for host-
family, toys and learning materials for the children if you have.
6. Meaningful Mid-autumn festival for disadvantaged children
SJV1615 10/09-17/09 FEST/KIDS/SOCI/ART Vols: 15
Background: The Mid-Autumn festival is named "Tết Trung Thu" in Vietnamese. It is also known
as Children's Festival because of the event's emphasis on children. In olden times, the Vietnamese
www.sjvietnam.org

13
believed that children, being innocent and pure, had the closest connection to the sacred and natural
world. Being close to children was seen as a way to connect with animist spirits and deities.
One important event before and during the festival are lion dances. Dances are performed by both non-
professional children's groups and trained professional groups. Lion dance groups perform on the
streets, going to houses asking for permission to perform for them. If the host consents, the "lion" will
come in and start dancing as a blessing of luck and fortune for the home. In return, the host
gives lucky money to show their gratitude
Work: Volunteers will prepare performances and gifts for the disadvantaged children with different
backgrounds from different projects of SJ Vietnam: street children living in the Fisher Village or the
children patients in National hospital of Acupuncture, etc.
Accommodation and food: Volunteers will stay at the dormitory with basic conditions. Breakfast and
dinner will be provided at accommodation, only lunch at local restaurant near project site.
Location: Ha Noi, Ho Chi Minh
Terminal: Noi Bai International Airport (HAN)
Transportation: Public bus
Remarks: Sleeping bag, games, toys and activities materials for the children if you have. Mid-autumn

Background: With a total of 326 children (155 girls), Nuoc Trong nursery school is supposed to be
among the main kindergartens in Tan Hoi village. Operated by the workforce of 10 staff and 19 teachers,
the kindergarten is still considered to be underdeveloped with the lack of necessary facilities. Indeed, the
school is totally short of teaching tools and there are not enough toys to help the kids to develop their
intelligence as well as social skills properly. Additionally, the majority of teachers are young and
inexperienced, thus suffering a great deal of difficulties in teaching and nurturing the kids. Furthermore, a
number of classrooms in the school are quite poorly decorated, which may make it much harder in
stimulating the children’s spiritual awareness and growth.
Work: Organize activities for the kids (teaching, singing, playing games...); do gardening (planting,
picking-up grass, etc.); join in with repairing house or other manual works.
Accommodation and food: Volunteers will stay at the dormitory with basic conditions. Meals will be
prepared by volunteers, or sometimes dine in the local restaurant nearby. Please bring your own

2. Taking care of and interacting with blind kids in Huynh De Nhu Nghia shelter
SJVS-1604 15/08-26/08 DISA/EDU/RENO/KIDS Vols: 10
Background: Huynh De Nhu Nghia shelter is a charity organization founded in 1993, financed by
donors and the religious orders, where around 50 female blind kids from 5-18 years old are living. All
the kids come from poor family around Vietnam, not only from Ho Chi Minh city. They study in
normal school and follow some special courses with tutor at the shelter such as music, sport, IT (basic
about computer) and even martiar art to help them being more confident and able to self-protect. The
most difficulty for the kids comes when they finish high school with only two options, or go to
vocational center for blind or come back their home town which is impossible for their future.
Work: Organize activities for the kids (games, songs), teach English for the nurse and kids, do some
gardening and re-decorate for the garden and their living place as they don’t have many staff to take
care of everything.
Accommodation and food: Volunteers will stay in basic accommodation at the guesthouse. Western
style bathrooms, wifi are available. Meals are provided at a local restaurant nearby the site.
Location: Huynh De Nhu Nghia shelter, 267/4 Nguyen Thi Tu, Binh Tan dist, Ho Chi Minh city.
Terminal: Tan Son Nhat international airport (SGN)

Background: Vinh Son orphanage is an organization held by a group of catholic people who have a
warm heart to help poor children improve their life by attending schools. There are more than 100
children from 3 to 12 year-old from poor families where parents don’t have any condition to take care
of their children. As a result, they don’t go to school although studying is a right of children. Thanks to
volunteers of Vinh Son orphanage, the unlucky children are found and summoned to join the class
held by them with hope for a better life. The local volunteering teachers teach them reading, writing
and calculating while preparing documents for them to apply to public school at the same time. The
teachers also give them moral lessons so they can stay away from social evils.
Work: Organize activities and teach English; conduct small workshops about child’s right for the kids
here, get adult, young parents who live nearby involved.

Background: The Thu Duc hospital with ISO 9001:2008 is the general hospital which provides
responsive and comprehensive healthcare service for people. It has an authorized bed capacity of
800 patients and a daily inpatient average of 3,000 patients. It serves an average of 560000
outpatients per year. There are up to 100 pediatrics who are in desperate need of regular assistance.

During treatment periods, the patients do not have access to formal education and are unable to
participate in common leisure activities. The hospital itself is deficient in organizing
psychological-care activities for young patients. Pediatric patients have a right to healthy
development, both physically and spiritually like anyone else. They also have a desire to
communicate, play and, receive knowledge (some children there are quite shy so volunteers need
to encourage them to be more confident). Efforts have been made by all doctors and nurses in the
hospital to meet the patients’ needs though they often fall short. Furthermore, patient families are
often in need of financial aid and help with caring for their relatives there.
Work: Re-decorate the wall of the patient room, make it become a real kindergarten and enjoyable
environment for pediatrics especially the one who have to stay in hospital for years. Organize the
suitable activities (singing, drawing…) for kids under the observation of doctors.
Location: Ho Chi Minh city.
Terminal: Tan Son Nhat Airport (SGN).

Background: A part of South-Western Region of Vietnam, Dong Thap is a province with highly
developed agriculture industry. It adjoins Cambodia to the North and 3 other local provinces to the
West, East and South. A typical province in Mekong Delta, Dong Thap has a complex system of

rivers, channels as well as big lakes and ponds. Taking advantages of its large water body, Dong Thap
has developed a very convenient transportation system. And as it is a very agriculture-focused
province, Dong Thap produces many valuable types of rice, poultry and seafood. Nowadays, the most
popular sceneries are borderless rice fields and peaceful boats floating on the channels.
Enjoying a temperate climate, wide irrigation system, permanent fresh-water source supplied by Tien
River and Hau River, and rich river deposit, the agriculture of Dong Thap keeps growing well. At
present, Dong Thap is the 3rd largest rice paddy in Vietnam with a planted area of 462,042ha and
paddy output of more than 2.8 million tons. Dong Thap is also well known for fruits, specifically as
Cao Lanh mango, Lai Vung mandarin, Chau Thanh long an and Phong Hoa grapefruit (fruit-able
during the year), etc. which bring about high economic values for gardeners. Within the province,
there are various typical orchards having been specialized to produce consistent quality fruits, which
aim at building up brand-name and meeting export requirements. In Cao Lanh, almost local people
doing farming in the rice fields and gardening.
Work: Collaborate with Cultural and tourism faculty, Environment faculty of Dong Thap university,
organize activities to raise awareness of local people about climate change, sustainable tourism in
Tram Chim national park, draw a potential tour for cultural tourism in Sa Dec – the hundred years old
flower village. Intercultural exchange with local students, teacher and local villagers.

as Children's Festival because of the event's emphasis on children. In olden times, the Vietnamese
believed that children, being innocent and pure, had the closest connection to the sacred and natural
world. Being close to children was seen as a way to connect with animist spirits and deities.
