Upon graduating from North Allegheny, Briana was offered a scholarship to the University of Wisconsin, where she would be a member of the Badger’s nationally prominent rowing program. At Wisconsin, she continued her athletic achievements, contributing as an integral part of a team that would find themselves competing at four consecutive NCAA National Championships. In 2009 during the team’s National Championship appearance, Briana made history as a member of the Wisconsin women’s four, earning a silver medal, which is the highest placed women’s crew in Wisconsin’s history. In 2010, she was a member of the varsity eight that placed 10th at NCAAs, resulting in a seventh-place overall team finish. Once again, Briana contributed to yet another school record being broken, this time as the highest placed team that has ever finished at NCAAs for Wisconsin. To top that off, that same year the Badgers took home a Big Ten Championship, becoming the first and only Wisconsin team to do so. Heading into her senior year, after multiple record breaking seasons, Briana was named captain, leading the team to yet another year of success.

Following graduation, Briana went on to pursue a career in collegiate rowing. Her coaching stops have been at Bucknell University, Vesper Boat Club, and the University of Miami. While at Bucknell, she coached the first ever women’s freshman eight to Dad Vail Gold. She also coached the women’s varsity four and lightweight four to Dad Vail Silver along with a second place finish at the Patriot League Championships in the varsity four. During the summers of 2014 and 2015, Pittman was the head women’s U23 coach at Vesper Boat Club. While at Vesper, Briana’s crews won back-to-back US Rowing National Titles for the women’s points trophy. In the summer of 2015, Briana coached the U23 lightweight double to the U23 World Championships in Plovdiv, Bulgaria along with a Gold medal finish in the U23 women’s eight at the Royal Canadian Henley regatta. While at the University of Miami, Briana assisted in coaching the women’s varsity eight to a gold medal at the 2016 San Diego Crew Classic.

Briana is grateful for the North Allegheny Rowing Association for providing such a strong foundation to the sport and is especially grateful for her coaches, Don Heckenstaller (North Allegheny) and Bebe Bryans (Wisconsin).

William Sumner Brown

Cross Country/Track & Field Class of 1962

Bill Brown led the undefeated 1960 cross country team to WPIAL and PIAA team championships – the FIRST for any North Allegheny sport team in school history. Brown finished first individually in the WPIAL meet and second in the PIAA meet. He also led the team to victory with a second place finish (to teammate Bob Slaney) at the Hopewell Invitational Meet, and to victory in the Shaler Invitational with a first place finish.

During the 1961 track and field season, he ran the mile in school record time and anchored the mile relay team to help win the Shaler Invitational. His top five mile run finish at the WPIAL finals qualified him for the PIAA championship meet.

In Brown’s senior year, he again led the Tigers to the WPIAL and PIAA team cross country championships. He finished second at the WPIAL meet and third in the PIAA meet. Earlier he led the team to victory at the Slippery Rock Invitational and the Hopewell Invitational meets with first place performances in each.

In the 1962 track and field season, Brown again set NA records in the mile and half-mile runs. He led the track team to a third place finish at the WPIAL championship meet – the highest finish in school history to that date. Individually he qualified for the mile run at the PIAA championships, finishing fourth.

As a top academic student he was elected to the National Honor Society as a junior.

After graduating from NA, he attended Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He led it’s 1963 cross country team to victory in the Engineers Cup and the Boston University/Brandeis Invitational meets with first place finishes. He also had individual wins against University of New Hampshire, Wesleyan College, and the Coast Guard Academy. He was nineteenth in the NCAA III championship meet. In 1964 Brown registered individual wins in the Engineers Cup, and against Springfield College, Williams College, Boston College and the Coast Guard Academy. In 1963 and 1964 he placed third in the EICAA championships. In 1965 he was victorious once again in the Engineer Cup Invitational, and against Boston College, Springfield College and the University of New Hampshire. During that year he led his team to a ninth place finish at the Intercollegiate Association of Amateur Athletes of America championship meet. He also finished fifth in the 1965 New England Championships.

After graduating from MIT, Brown continued to run competitive races, including many marathons, for over 50 years. At age 75 he still runs several times each week. In 2000, William was named Road Runner of the Year for the 55-59 age group.

William Sumner Brown resides in Belmont, Massachusetts with wife Judy. William and Judy have a daughter, Lucy, and a son, David.

North Allegheny Swimming & Diving

The boys’ swimming and diving team won their third straight

state championship and sixth overall in the 2018-19 season.

In the state championship at Bucknell University, the boys

accumulated 279 points easily outdistancing second-place

finisher North Penn. Ricky Mihm and Jack Wright led the

way for the Tigers winning their events while the Tigers 400

Freestyle Relay team and the 200 Freestyle Relay team also

came away with gold medals at the meet. Wright finished the

PIAA Championship meet with three gold medals.

Boys Swimming Relay Champions

North Allegheny won two relay events and had two individuals

win events at the state championship last year. The Tigers won

the 400 Freestyle Relay for the second year in a row. The team

consisted of Richard Mihm, Branko Kasanovich, John Ehling

and Jack Wright, they posted a time of 2:59.80. Wright, Joshua

Galecki, Joel Songer and Kasanovich won the state title in the

200 Freestyle Relay. In the individual events, Mihm defended his

state title in the 500 Yard Freestyle and Wright won the 200 Yard

Freestyle giving him three gold medals at the state meet.

NORTH ALLEGHENY STATE CHAMPIONS

North Allegheny Boys Cross Country

After a dominant 2018-19 regular season, the boys’ cross country team swept through the WPIAL and

PIAA Championship, winning their 12th state title. In the state championship meet in Hershey, Coach

John Neff’s squad recorded a team score of 90 points to finish 22 points ahead of second-place

LaSalle College. Zachary Kinne and Daniel McGoey finished in second and third place respectively in

the individual medals.

North Allegheny Girls Cross Country

After finishing first in all but one regular season meet, Coach Neff’s girls’ cross country team dominated

the 2018-19 WPIAL and PIAA Championships to win their fourth state title. It was the first time in PIAA

history that both the boys’ and girls’ from the same school won state championships in the same year.

In Hershey, the girls’ dominated the meet with 65 points, which was 41 points better than second-place

West Chester Henderson. Hannah Lindgren led the way in the state title meet finishing fourth. Keely

Misutka finished in the top ten as well.

Caroline Wrigley

Caroline Wrigley had one of the most successful golfing

careers in WPIAL history. She was not only a three-time

WPIAL champion, but also won a PIAA Title in 2018 by

shooting 147 in the two-day event. Caroline’s score was

seven strokes better than runner-up Mary Kate Norcross

of Chambersburg. The next day, Caroline completed

the golf trifecta, by leading the Tigers to the PIAA Team

Championship.

NORTH ALLEGHENY STATE CHAMPIONS

Zach Kinne

It was a tale of two winning seasons for Zach

Kinne. In the winter, Zach won the PFTCA State

Championship in the 3000m run, winning the event

by 12 seconds running a 8:33.83. In the spring,

Zach ran against the fastest twenty-five 3200m

runners in the state at the PIAA State Track and Field

Championships at Shippensburg University. Kinne

led the race wire to wire, running a 9:01.94 and was

crowned the Class AAA State Champion. Kinne also

competed in the 1600m race a few hours later and

finished sixth, capping a successful year.

North Allegheny Girls Volleyball

The girls’ volleyball team had a very dominant season,

dropping only four sets all year on their way to their

second straight WPIAL and PIAA Championships. The

state championship was a rematch of the 2018 state title

against Bishop Shanahan and ended exactly the same

with a 3-0 sweep for the Lady Tigers. It was the first

time in PIAA history that the boys’ and girls’ programs

from the same school won back-to-back state titles in

volleyball. Coach Heidi Miller’s team finished with a 23-0

record extending their winning streak to 47 games.

North Allegheny Boys Volleyball

Coach Dan Schall’s boys’ volleyball team swept Central

York 3-0 in the PIAA Championship to make it back-to-

back state titles to go along with back-to-back WPIAL ti-

tles. They won the three sets by a score of 25-21, 25-20,

25-20. It was the first time in PIAA history that the boys’

and girls’ programs from the same school won back-to-

back state titles in volleyball. North Allegheny finished

with a 23-0 record and has extended their winning streak

to 46 games.
