On October 29, about 300 children and their parents attended our annual costume party, held as three diff erent sessions throughout the day. Kids decorated festive cupcakes, enjoyed a live science show and took photos with Daniel Tiger. Visit pbshawaii.org/keiki to learn more about the PBS Hawai‘i Keiki Club.

The second Hawaiian Media Makers Confer-ence took place November 2 at Ala Moana Hotel. The theme of the event: “Watch, observe. Help others and accept help. Let us all support one another.” PBS Hawai‘i sponsored the lunch panel on mentorship, featuring former HIKI NŌ student Hoku Subiono, HIKI NŌ mentor Christi Young and E Haku Inoa fi lmmaker Christen Hepuakoa Mar-quez, and moderated by our Director of Learning Initiatives, Robert Pennybacker.

Daniel Tiger looks more like a stuff ed animal than a sage. But he’s as wise as he is fuzzy. In the animated TV show, Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood

– built upon Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood – Daniel Tiger shares simple life lessons that help toddlers deal with very real issues, such as disappointment, anger and jealousy.

Their parents say the shows provide counsel and rein-forcement for them, too.

“I wish I could have had a show like that when I was young,” a father told me. “My favorite was the episode about being bullied.”

I heard that sentiment again and again at PBS Ha-wai‘i’s recent Keiki Club parties, as Daniel Tiger mingled with the excited toddler set.

“I admit it. I watch the show with my sons,” a mom told me. “And I fi nd myself taking Daniel’s advice. It’s easy to re-member, with those little songs that he and his friends sing.”

Oh, I know. I recall a heated discussion in the offi ce. It ended with laughter, when a staff er chanted: “When you feel so mad, that you want to roar, take a deep breath, and count to four. 1, 2, 3, 4.”

The staff er was channeling Daniel Tiger, of course. The show shares social-emotional skills for preschoolers.

Feeling left out, sadness, frustration – these emo-tions can intrude at any time in life. Daniel Tiger faces these challenges and more with a knowing and positive spirit. He understands that sometimes kids don’t feel like brushing their teeth; potty-training can be awfully tricky; and it can be hard to say you’re sorry.

I asked a four-year-old what she learned from her buddy Daniel.

“Everyone is big enough to do something,” she answered proudly. “I’m big enough to clean up my toys by myself.”

Her mother commented, “I actually found myself thinking about Daniel Tiger during all this negative election stuff . We need to be more kind.”

As her child made a new friend in the Keiki Club, her mother added: “I told her that she needs to learn her manners; she wouldn’t want to turn out to be rude and mean, like some of the adults we see on the TV news.”

Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood airs daily at 9:00 and 9:30 am on PBS Hawai‘i.

Narrated by actor Tom Selleck, Remember Pearl Harbor chronicles the personal stories of veterans and citizens who witnessed the surprise attack by the Jap-anese on the American Pacifi c Fleet on December 7, 1941, launching the United States into World War II.

The fi lm features fi rst-person accounts from more than 35 WWII veterans and Hawai‘i residents. One of them was Barbara Kotinek, who was just six years old at the time and lived within eyesight of Pearl Harbor. The documenta-ry also includes a rare interview with Mitsuo Fuchida, the Japanese pilot who coordinated the entire aerial attack.

As part of the offi cial 75th Pearl Harbor anniversary ceremony, Remember Pearl Harbor is set to premiere at an invitation-only screening on Sunday, December 4 before an expected audience of more than 1,000 individuals inside World War II Hanger 79 on Ford Island, Pearl Harbor.

“Remember Pearl Harbor is our 17th documentary fi lm on World War II and our most ambitious project to date in terms of the story, importance and its scope,” Gray said.

“It was the moment America was launched into World War II, and Pearl Harbor still resonates today.”

NHK World Documentary – Road to RedemptionPremieres Sunday, December 4, 8:30 pm

This fi lm tells the story of two men who stood on oppo-site sides of the front line in World War II. Mitsuo Fuchida was the chief commander of Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor. Jacob DeShazer, a U.S. Army Air Force corpo-ral, dropped incendiary bombs on Nagoya in a revenge raid. After the war, both became devout Christians and embarked on missions in each other’s homeland. They eventually met – and forged a bond.

PBS Hawai‘i thanks Hawaii Dental Service for its broadcast support of Curious George.

“Educating parents and keiki to see the dentist by their fi rst birthday is critical to establishing good habits and ensuring healthy smiles,” says Mark Yamakawa, Hawaii Dental Service President and CEO. “Hawaii Dental Service also believes it’s important to nurture our keiki’s natural sense of wonder and curiosity. Curious George makes learning a fun activity that parents can share with their children.”

“Learning” is one of HDS’s core values – Service, Mindfulness, Integrity, Learning, Effi ciency and Solidarity (SMILES).

Hawaii Dental Service has been serving Hawai‘i since 1962 as the state’s fi rst nonprofi t dental benefi ts provider. Through the HDS Foundation, HDS supports programs that provide oral health education, prevent oral disease and increase access to dental care for underserved populations statewide.

“PBS Hawai‘i’s focus on quality educational programs is a welcome reminder to all local businesses of the importance to invest in educa-tion and leadership development for Hawai‘i’s youth,” says Yamakawa.

“Through our collective eff orts, we can perpetuate a community that values learning and sharing knowledge for future generations.”
