Jack Davenport, Zoe Boyle, and Catherine Steadman team up fora medical series with astounding suspense, supreme satire, and smart

sixties style on “Breathless,” airing inthree parts on Masterpiece Mystery!

Set in London in 1961, “Breathless” fol-lows the exploits of doctors, nurses, andspouses connected with a busy obstetricsward at a National Health Service hospi-tal. It’s a time when gynecologists are allmen and nurses aspire to a trip down theaisle with a good-looking doctor. Abor-tion is illegal, the Beatles are still nobod-ies, and society is on the cusp of profoundchange.

No one seems to have more going forhim than Otto Powell (Davenport), a well-off gynecologist who can performmiracles in the operating room and has a

trophy wife and a bright, well-mannered son. Otto also has a wan-dering eye, which alights most recently on new nurse Angela Wil-son (Steadman), who plays uncommonly hard-to-get. Unknown toall, Angela is already married—although abandoned years earlier—

and is the sister of another of Otto’s nurse conquests, Jean (Boyle). Both sisters are mixed up in Otto’s occasional “specials”—secretabortions that he performs out of concern for the health of womenin dire straits. All risk imprisonment for their deeds.

The plot thickens considerably with the appearance of an ob-sessed detective who connects the dots that link some of the char-acters to events in another country and a different decade. It’s aninquiry that leaves protagonists, not to mention viewers…breathless.

“Breathless” on Masterpiece Mystery! will be broadcast Sun-days at 8:00 p.m. beginning August 24th and repeats Friday, Au-gust 29th at 11:00 p.m. On HD3-1, the series airs Sundays at 8:00p.m. and 12:00 midnight beginning August 24th and repeats Mon-days at 7:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.

Jack Davenport stars as Dr.Otto Powell and CatherineSteadman portrays AngelaWilson in “Breathless.”

R

Time Team America, the PBS series that combines archaeologi-cal discovery with good storytelling, is back for a gripping secondseason. Each of the four new episodes explores a different regionand time in U.S. history through the eyes, ears, and expertise of ateam of adventurous archaeologists.

Josiah Henson’s 1849autobiography inspiredHarriet Beecher Stowe’snovel Uncle Tom’s Cabinand galvanized abolition-ists. But for 30 years, hewas enslaved, on what wasonce a 270-acre plantationrun by Isaac Riley. An acre

of land and an old house are all that remain. Time Team Americadescends on a upscale DC suburb, peeling back layers of the oldkitchen floor to discover what remains here of Henson’s life andlegacy.

At Badger Hole, Oklahoma, the Time Team America crew ex-cavates what may be the largest Folsom-period bison kill site inNorth America. Long extinct, Bison Antiquus roamed the plains10,000 years ago. How were Paleoindian hunters able to kill somany of these massive bison—weighing 1500 pounds each—with-out the help of bows and arrows or even horses? What can thesebison bones tell us about our ancient past?

In 1864, the Confederate Army marched Union prisoners into ahastily built compound called Camp Lawton in Jenkins County,Georgia. The population mushroomed to more than 10,000 in justsix weeks. Then, as Sherman’s army approached, guards and pris-oners alike were forced to flee. Abandoned, the camp disappearedinto the forest and remained undisturbed for over a century. TheTeam searches for the original camp site and for artifacts that tell usof the hellish experiences of the prisoners once held captive here.

In Cortez, Colorado, the Teamexplores a village that 1500 yearsago was home to people of theBasketmaker III era, a culture thatadvanced itself with technologieslike farming, pottery, and the bowand arrow. The innovations of theBasketmaker III era led to thecomplex, beautiful AncestralPueblo cliff dwellings of the nearby Mesa Verde region, one of thefirst permanent settlements in North America. Recent discoveries leadresearchers to ask: how did life here shape human history?

On both 3-2 and HD3-1, Time Team America will be broad-cast as follows: Episodes 1 and 2 can be seen Tuesday, August 19that 7:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. Episodes 3 and 4 air Tuesday, August26th at 7:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. On HD3-1 only, the series repeatsWednesdays at 6:00 a.m and 12:00 noon (Pts. 1 & 3) and 7:00 a.mand 1:00 p.m. (Pts. 2 & 4).

Her celebrated photograph“Migrant Mother” is one of themost recognized and arrestingimages in the world, a hauntingportrait that came to representthe suffering of America’s Great Depression. Yet few know thestory, struggles, and profound body of work of the woman behindthe camera: Dorothea Lange.

American Masters “Dorothea Lange: Grab a Hunk of Light-ning” explores the life, passions, and vision of the influential pho-tographer. Her enduring images document five turbulent decadesof American history, including the Great Depression, the DustBowl, and World War II Japanese American internment camps.

Award-winning cinematographer Dyanna Taylor—the grand-daughter of Lange —directs and narrates this intimate AmericanMasters portrait of the artist whose empathy for people on themargins of society challenged America to know itself.

American Masters “Dorothea Lange: Grab a Hunk of Light-ning” can be seen Friday, August 29th at 9:00 p.m. and Sunday,August 31st at 9:30 p.m. On HD3-1, it can be seen Friday, August29th at 8:00 p.m. and Saturday, August 30th at 7:00 p.m.

Does sentencing a teenager to life without parole serve our society well? This is thestory of one of those children, now a young man, seeking a second chance in Florida. Atage 15, Kenneth Young received four consecutive life sentences for a series of armedrobberies. Imprisoned for more than a decade, he believed he would die behind bars. Now aU.S. Supreme Court decision could set him free.

“15 to Life: Kenneth’s Story” on P.O.V. (Point of View) follows Young’s strugglefor redemption, revealing a justice system with thousands of young people serving sen-tences intended for society’s most dangerous criminals.

Kenneth’s sentence was not a rarity. There are more than 2,500 juveniles serving lifesentences in the United States for non-lethal crimes, as well as for murder. In the 1990s,many states reacted to a rise in violent youth crimes by amending their laws to allow morejuveniles to be tried as adults. Then, in 2010, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in Grahamv. Florida that life sentences for juveniles convicted of crimes other than murder wereunconstitutional. That made 77 Florida inmates, including Kenneth, eligible for early re-lease. But how would the Florida courts, historically in favor of juvenile life sentences, apply the Supreme Court decision to a decade-old case?

“15 to Life” is an eye-opening portrait of the American justice system as it stands to-day, putting an indelibly human face on its policies concerning children.

“15 to Life: Kenneth’s Story” on P.O.V. will be broadcast Monday, August 4th at 9:00p.m. On HD3-1, it airs Monday, August 4th at 8:00 p.m. and Tuesday, August 5th at 7:00a.m. and 1:00 p.m.

Her Majesty’s Secret Service, or MI6 asit is known, is the world’s most legendaryspy agency, thanks to the James Bond sto-ries. Set up in 1909 as the Secret ServiceBureau, the existence of MI6 was not for-mally acknowledged until 1994—whichgoes a long way toward understanding themodus operandi of this government agency.Secrets of Her Majesty’s Secret Servicereveals that initially, the bureau was set upto control secret intelligence operationsoverseas, particularly concentrating on Im-perial Germany’s activities.

With unprecedented access to some ofthe key players in British espionage, thisfilm lifts the veil on the shadowy world ofspying, going back in time and behind thescenes to look at some of the world’s most cal-culated and delicately executed operations.

Secrets of Her Majesty’s Secret Ser-vice airs Sunday, August 31st at 7:00 p.m.On HD3-1, it can be seen Sunday, August31st at 7:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m.

Dick Cavett’s Watergate premieres ex-actly 40 years to the hour since PresidentNixon appeared on television to announce hisresignation, which would officially take ef-fect the next day, August 9th, 1974.

With the exception of the nightly networknews shows, no one on television devotedmore airtime to Watergate than talk show host Cavett. From1972 to 1974, America watched the Watergate scandal unfold on“The Dick Cavett Show” as Cavett interviewed nearly every ma-jor Watergate figure—on both sides of the crisis—including JohnEhrlichman, Alexander Haig, G. Gordon Liddy, Jeb Magruder, andmembers of the Senate Watergate Committee: Senators HowardBaker, Daniel Inouye, Herman Talmadge, Lowell Weicker, andmore.

Dick Cavett’s Watergate begins with the first critical Watergatemilestone: the arrest of five men for breaking and entering into theDemocratic National Committee (DNC) headquarters at theWatergate complex in Washington, DC, on June 17th, 1972, andthen takes viewers through each development in the scandal to thefinal critical milestone, the subsequent pardon by President GeraldR. Ford on September 8th, 1974. In an interview from 1979 withPresident Ford, Cavett pressed the president for his opinion ofNixon’s guilt or innocence. President Ford’s response, 35 yearslater, is still surprising.

Dick Cavett’s Watergate can be seen Friday, August 8th at 9:00p.m. and repeats Tuesday, August 12th at 10:00 p.m.
