Program Highlights January ~ February ~ March 2017 http://www.cce.cornell.edu/herkimer/ 4-H YOUTH DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM Twelve students from three Herkimer County high schools are parcipang in the spring 4-H Government Intern Program. Also, the students aended the Herkimer County Chamber of Commerce Legislator Breakfast with state and federal representaves. AGRICULTURE PROGRAM HUMAN ECOLOGY PROGRAM 4-H’ers from Herkimer and Oneida Counes parcipated in the 4-H Vet Science program. During the two-day program, youth toured the Waterville Veterinary Clinic and went on a farm visit with Dr. Bill Johnson. Another workshop took the 4-H’ers to Depanda- Bull Services to learn about arficial inseminaon. These opportunies are vital to show the next generaon of farmers the importance of animal health and reproducon. CCE is working with Herkimer County HealthNet to implement the Healthy Store Iniave in Herkimer County through the NYS Department of Health Iniaves for Mul-Sector Public Health Acon (IMPACT) grant. Store assessments were completed at the Village Market in Mohawk, Carney’s Corners in Herkimer, Melrose Market in Frankfort, Greenies in Ilion, The Country Store in Salisbury, and Country Farms in Frankfort. Signage is being shared to increase visibility of healthy choices. Over seventy 4-H youth parcipated in Public Presentaons, with four going to the district compeon. By parcipang in this event, 4-H youth improve their public speaking skills while developing self-confidence, poise, self- esteem, stage presence and knowledge, giving them an advantage over their peers in this lifeme skills area, which will be useful in their future social, educaonal and career pursuits. The first Herkimer County Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) Fair was held in March. Six CSA farms shared informaon on their CSA shares available with over 30 consumers. Over 400 area farmers took part in trainings offered by the Central New York Dairy and Field Crops Team this quarter including. Workshops and meengs included: “Strategizing for the Future: The Future of Milk Markets and How to Develop an Economic Plan,” “Field Crop Pest Management” (six locaons); “Winter Dairy Management-Don’t Be Lame” (emphasis on hoof health), “2017 Corn Day,” and “2017 Dairy Day: Geng Cows Pregnant Puts Money in Your Pocket.” A seed starng workshop was held at Young’s General Store & Ace of Ilion. Twenty youth took part and look forward to showing their finished products at the Herkimer County Fair this summer.
