University of Évora

The University of Évora is a public institution of higher education whose origins date back to 1559. After

being closed in the 18th century, the university reopens in 1979. At the present time, it is organized in

departments which are grouped in schools related to specific scientific domains, such as:

•Arts

•Social Sciences

•Technology Sciences

•Health

Univerrsity of Évora Meeting centre 10-3-18

The São João de Deus School of Nursing, a public polytechnic institute of higher education, became part of the University of Evora in 2004.

The campus:

Blended in with the city, the campus is comprised of buildings with a high patrimonial value from different historical periods. The following buildings deserve special attention:

• Espirito Santo College • Casa Cordovil • Luís António Verney College • Pedro da Fonseca College • Mateus d' Aranda College • Vimioso Palace • Leões Factory • São João de Deus School of Nursing

Outside city limits, the university reaches as far as 12km at the Mitra Centre. There are also two experimental estates in the south of Alentejo and several other units scattered over different cities in the south of Portugal where teaching and researching activities are carried out:

• Mitra Centre • Estremoz Centre • Sines Centre • Marvão Centre • Alter do Chão Centre

University demographics The University of Evora has around 5100 students enrolled in graduate courses, 2200 in Master’s courses and 900 in PhD courses. Moreover, it has a teaching staff of 640, of whom more than 83% hold a PhD degree, and an administrative staff of 470.

EFIB - European Federation for Soil Bioengineering

The European Federation of Soil Bioengineering EFIB is the umbrella organization of European soil

bioengineering associations and companies. Currently, EFIB comprises:

•The German Company for Soil Bioengineering (Gesellschaft für Ingenieurbiologie e.V.)

•The Swiss Association for Soil Bioengineering (Verein für Ingenieurbiologie Schweiz)

•The Austrian Federation for Water and Waste Management ÖWAV (Österrreichischer Wasser- und

Abfallwirtschaftsverband), Working Group Soil Bioengineering

•The Italian Association for Soil Bioengineering AIPIN (Associazione Italiana per l´Ingegneria Naturalistica)

•The Spanish Association for Soil Bioengineering AEIP (Asociación Española de Ingeniería del Paisaje)

•The Portuguese Association for Soil Bioengineering APENA (Associação Portuguesa de Engenharia Natural)

•The French Association for Soil Bioengineering AgeBio (Association française de génie biologique)

•The Russian Forestry Association Section MAIKOP.

The Federation aims at the development and advancement of soil bioengineering techniques as a technical-

biological discipline, dealing with the use of plants for engineering purposes.

The focus lies on the advancement of plants to be used as construction material for stabilization work on

river banks, lakes, and coasts, for slopes and gullies as well as to reduce and prevent erosion and mass

wasting processes. EFIB further aims at the revitalization of water bodies, the improvement in biodiversity,

the integration in the landscape and the enhancement of life quality.

EFIB was founded in 1995 to coordinate and advance the dissemination of knowledge and experience of

the member associations and companies.

ECOMED Erasmus + PROJECT

The “Specialisation Process for the Ecoengineering Sector in the Mediterranean Environment (ECOMED)”

project is an initiative to advance the specialization process on Soil and Water Bioengineering, and to

generate new alliances and dynamics in the sector, within the Mediterranean region.

•Its specific objectives are:

•To improve the design/calculation of Bioengineering Works

•To generate a suitable vegetation database for the Mediterranean region

•To improve the implementation/construction processes

•To improve the definition and planning of the monitoring of the works

•To improve the works analysis tools, to be more effective in restoration and rehabilitation.

•To improve the contents of the training offered related to landscape bioengineering

So the EcoMed project will enhance Soil and Water bioengineering works at the different stages and phases:

design/calculation, implementation/construction, monitoring, and education/training. This will be

accomplished by implementing applied research works from 2017 till 2018. These works include the

selection of a set of bioengineering tools and projects within the European Mediterranean region to further

study and analyze them.

This project that is co-funded by the ERASMUS + Programme of the European Union will generate new tools

to improve the possibilities of intervening in the landscape through techniques and approaches of

bioengineering, taking into account the particularities of the Mediterranean region.

Overall the consortium comprises of seven universities and seven companies distributed in eight countries

throughout the European region with Universidad Politecnica de Madrid the coordinator.

VENUE : ÉVORA , another reason to join us

ÉVORA, capital of Alto Alenlejo, city ol an outtress wa standing beauty, embraced by its fortress walls, filled with historie memories in each street, each home, each inhabitant. The historie centre of Évora as a monumental ensemble of great historic and cultural value, was classified by UNESCO, in 1986, World Heritage.

lts squares and monuments tell us national history, religion and culture episodes and its townsflolk are proud of bohl past and present times. The natural beauty of this region combines with the monumental richness of this town-museum that nowadays is also a modern and touristy city. Inhabited since the Neolilthic period, the archaeological landscape that surrounds the city presents important monuments, such as the Almendres cromlech and the Anta Grande do Zambujeiro (dolmen). Many were the ancient people that have been here, but the Romans were those who transformed Evora into an imperial town. They called it Ebora Liberalitas Julia, and left several sings of their passage, from which the roman temple, known impropetly as "Templo de Diana" stands out.

The importance of Évora is undeniable along the centuries: during the Avis Dynasty (1385-1580) the city became the chosen place of the court, which settled here frequently, to the detriment of Lisbon or Coimbra. Cardinoal King D o. Henrique founded, in 1551, the Holly Spirit College, which became the Évora University in 1559, when il received Rome's approval. In 1759 it was closed by order of Marqués de Pombal, on the Jesuits expulsion, reopening again in 1973.
