For students with at least two years of college level French, Linfield recommends the American University Center of Provence in Aix Program. Formally recog-nized by the French national Ministry of Education, the American University Center of Provence (AUCP) provides a full-immersion French program, combined with an all French-speaking environment, individual homestay, language partner, personal interest activ-ity and community service wtih rigorous course work taught by French university faculty.

The French Pacticum is the cornerstone of the AUCP and consists of academic course work linked with four interrelated experiential components (individual homestay, a language partner, a personal interest activ-ity and community service).

Selection Criteria

All 3 programs are open to students in good academic and social standing who have completed at least one semester at Linfield with a 2.75 cumulative minimum GPA. Preference is given to students with a 3.0 aver-age in their French language courses. Students cannot participate in both a semester abroad and January Term off-campus course in the same academic year without special permission from the International Programs Office. On the basis of an application, supporting documents, and a personal interview, a selection com-mittee judges each applicant to determine motivation, readiness and academic preparation for this study abroad experience. A series of obligatory orientation meetings for all participants (usually one weekend and several other meetings) is held in the spring semester prior to departure. All participants must take or audit the appropriate level of French in the semester directly preceding study abroad. Linfield will then formally nominate successful students to the center they have selected. Final decision rests with the administration of each study center.

Calendar

Students may participate in either the fall or spring term or for a full academic year. Specific dates are pro-vided in the brochures or the websites of the center.

Costs

The cost of studying in France is similar to spending an equivalent period of time on the McMinnville campus. Linfield College pays the cost of round-trip airfare from the Portland International Airport to an interna-tional destination for the student’s first study abroad experience. Students pay regular tuition, technology fee and a program fee. Out-of-pocket expenses, pass-port and visa fees, and local or regional travel are the responsibility of the students. Linfield students may use their financial aid while abroad.

Credits

Students enroll in French and all semester abroad students are required to take IDST 031 Intercultural Communication:Departure and Reentry (S/U, 1 credit). It is also recommended that students take TCCA 230 Intercultural Communication: Global Perspectives and courses in European politics and history in preparation for the semester/year in France.

— Program Options —Centre International d’Etudes Francaises (CIDEF) in Angers

For students with lower language proficiency (one year of college level French), we highly recommend the CIDEF program in Angers. The International Center for French Studies (C.I.D.E.F.) was founded in 1947. It is part of the L’Universite Catholique de l’Ouest, an estab-lishment of higher education serving 11,000 students. Each year, the International Center welcomes approxi-mately 1,600 students from 70 different countries.

The university is centrally located in the city of Angers. It is surrounded by a park and is just 15 minutes from the train station. The International Centre is located in the Bazin building. It is open on weekdays from 9a.m. - 12 p.m. and from 2 - 5 p.m. It is closed on Saturdays and Sundays. Students are welcome to use the library, audio visual and media facilities, language laboratory and computer laboratory equipped with 20 e-mail sta-tions. (E-mail use is free).

An orientation will be held for new students together with their professors. Each student will reeive an ori-entation handbook with practical information to assist them as they settle into life at the university.

The office staff will assist new students with everyday difficulties including the preparation of documents for the “carte de sejour.”

TestingDuring orientation, students will be tested to de-termine their comprehension and expressive skills in French. The tests will last two hours after which students will be placed in French language classes that best fit their skill level.

Language CoursesThe language courses offered at the center aim to:Develop comprehension of the written and spoken language; develop oral skills in everyday situations andincrease vocabulary and grammatical competence

Room and BoardStudents are placed in homestays with French families in Angers, with some meals included. Meals can also be purchased in the university restaurants which are open for lunch and dinner during the school year.

brochures to improve written and spoken expres-sion and enhance vocabulary.

• Systematic review of French grammar• Individual research based on a novel or non-fiction

work of choice followed up by written and oral presentations.

• Advanced students will write a 3,000 word thesis under the guidance of a professor. The thesis should be based on France and French society in one of the following fields: politics, economics, literature, arts, sports and education. Students will present their thesis at the end of the semester before a jury of two people.

The CurriculumStudents are required to take at least 6 hours of language classes, earning three Linfield credits. Fall semester candidates, only, have the option of taking an additional three Linfield credits of language during the September intensive session.
