This Paper Examines Experimentally the Use of a Fluidic Spoiler toSuppress the Acoustic Resonance Within a Partially ClosedCylindrical Cavity Subject to a Grazing Flow. The Relative Movementof Aircraft and High-speed Land-based Vehicles Through Air OftenResults in Structural Cavities in These Vehicles Being Subject toShear Layer Driven Resonance. This Can Lead to High AmplitudePressure Fluctuations Within the Cavity Volume, Causing Damage toStores or Equipment Found Within Landing-gear Wheel or WeaponBays, for Example, or Else Significant Discomfort to the Passengersof Cars or Trains. This Large Scale Buffeting Can Also Cause VehicleStability Problems and Can Increase Drag. As Equally Problematic Isthe Tonal Noise That Can Be Radiated to the Environment CausingAnnoyance to Those Living in the Vicinity of Airports. A Number ofStudies to Be Found in the Literature Have Examined Both Passiveand Active Methods to Suppress Cavity Noise All of Which Have BothStrengths and Limitations Tending to Be Related to SpecificApplication and Flow Conditions. This Work Presents a Novel MethodWhere Passive-flow-control Consisting of an Upstream FluidicSpoiler: Which Might Also Be Called an ``aircurtain'' or Simply anUpstream Planar Jet in Cross-flow, is Used to Redirect the UpstreamFlow so That the Cavity Orifice Is Shielded. The Result is That WhatWas the Grazing Flow Can No Longer Detach from the UpstreamLeading Edge of the Cavity and Thus Vortex Shedding isSuppressed.

The Scope of the Study Will Include an Examination of Higher OrderAzimuthal Acoustic Modes Excited in the Cylindrical Cavity: ModesWhich Have Received Little Attention in the Literature but Which CanBe Readily Excited for Many Flow Configurations for PartiallyCovered Cavities. In Addition, the Work Will Present the NovelConfiguration of Dual-fluidic Spoilers. Single Planar Jets in a Cross-flow Can Themselves Generate Both: Jet Mixing Noise Scaled withthe 8th Power of the Planar Jet Velocity; and Also Exit Blowing-slotNoise, Which Typically Is Scaled with the 5th Power of the Planar JetVelocity. It Is Demonstrated That the Addition of a SecondaryUpstream Planar Jet at a Lower Velocity Can Allow the Primary Jet toAchieve the Original Shielding Height but at a Lower Primary Velocity. This Results in a Decrease in Its Jet Mixing Noise and Also Causesthe Angle at Which the Jet Leaves the Blowing-slot to Be MorePerpendicular to the Plane Surface Resulting in the Blowing-slotNoise to Be Also Reduced. -StartFragment-->In this paper, we attempt an understanding of themodifications of the linear instability waves in a serrated jet due tochanges in the chevron geometries. The motivation is a reduced-order description of chevron jet noise in order to design the optimalchevron nozzle for mixing noise mitigation. We use RANS to obtainthe mean flow fields due to various chevron geometries in a highsubsonic cold jet. Subsequently, linear parabolized stability equations(PSE) is used to determine the consequent changes in thedownstream evolution of the low-frequency and low-azimuthal Fouriermode instability waves that are responsible for the dominant aft anglenoise radiation in jets.-EndFragment--> A. In this paper, we pursue the modeling of the coherent wavepackets ina dual-stream axisymmetric high-speed high-Reynolds number jet ofrealistic geometry. Such wavepackets have been conclusively foundin round jets and even in jets issuing from serrated nozzles, and havebeen linked to the dominant mixing noise radiation thereof. Thewavepackets are modeled as linear instabilities of the turbulent meanflow using parabolized stability equations. The overall motivation is toarrive at a reduced-order model for rapidly predicting the approximateacoustic field of dual-stream jets. A. Sinha; D.V. Gaitonde; N. Sohoni
