Join Ridgefield Library’s Assistant Director Mary Rindfleisch for a “dip” into Proust’s masterwork with a discussion of the first volume, Swann’s Way. The recommended

edition is the 2002 Lydia Davis translation; a limited number of free copies of the book are available to registered participants, courtesy of the Friends of the Library, and may be picked up at the Reference Desk at the Library.

Dipping Into

PrOustThis fall the Library will join with The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum to present a multi-media series of programs based on Marcel Proust’s In Search of Lost Time, better known as Remembrance of Things Past or, in its original French, À la recherche du temps perdu. The novel, in seven volumes, is one of the longest in the world at 1.5 million words. Our series Dipping Into Proust will focus on just the first book, Swann’s Way, the volume that contains the now famous “episode of the madeleine” which sparked the involuntary memories of the book’s narrator.

The recommended edition is the 2002 Lydia Davis translation; a limited number of free copies of the book will be available to registered participants courtesy of the Friends of the Library and may be picked up in the Reference Desk of the Library.

Book Discussion: the nonfictioneers BookDiscussion of the DReyFuS aFFaiR by Piers Paul ReadIn the 1890s, on the basis of flimsy evidence, Captain Alfred Dreyfus, a rising star in the French artillery command with Alsatian Jewish roots, was placed under arrest for the crime

of high treason. Not long afterward, he was sentenced to spend the rest of his life on the legendary Devil’s Island. The saga of Dreyfus’s many trials is a fast-moving mystery story rife with heroes and villains, loose women, loyal wives, bisexual men, tricksters, and charlatans. But this was no mere sideshow. The anti-Semitism and deceit on display in the Dreyfus case was an ominous prelude to the Holocaust and the long, bloody twentieth century to come. The intense political and judicial scandal that ensued divided French society between those who supported Dreyfus and those who condemned him. Marcel Proust was one of his supporters and the Dreyfus Affair is chronicled in À la recherche du temps perdu.

LecTuRe: the Life & work of Marcel Proust with Dr. Mark Schenker Dr. Schenker, Associate Dean at Yale College, will kick off this literary series with an introductory lecture about the life and work of Marcel Proust. Dr. Schenker has led many

“sold-out” lectures at the Library in the past, including programs on such literary giants as James Joyce, John Steinbeck and, most recently, Charles Dickens.
