Solemnity of Mary, the Mother of God, January 1st. The solemn feast of Mary, the Mother of God is always celebrated on January 1st and is usually a Holy Day of Obligation. Since it is celebrated on a Monday this year the American Bishops Conference has removed the obligation to attend Mass on that day. We have scheduled two Masses on that day – 9 am in Spanish and 11 am in English. We hope you can join us for the celebration of this great Marian feast.

Our parish is participating in Living the Eucharist this upcoming Lenten season. It begins the week of February 11, 2018. Ash Wednesday is February 14, 2018. This

spiritual renewal program provides us with opportunities to grow in our faith through learning more about the Eucharist, participating more fully in Sunday Mass, and living the Eucharist each day as disciples of Christ. Sign up Sundays will be held at Masses the weekends of January 6 and 13, 2018. Materials are now available for purchase. Please contact Lisa at (575) 921-1369 or Patricia at (575) 649-6971 for materials or for more information about this program. Please join us. Thank you.

True Reformers is a study crafted to teach about those who led the Church’s rebirth from the ashes of confusion caused by the Protestant Reformation. In these six sessions, participants will learn about the true benefactors of the human race: the saints. The saints of the Catholic Reformation show us just how powerful—and beautiful—is the human heart’s free response to God’s generous grace. To access “True Reformer” Log in to Formed.org. Click on “Study” at the top of the page. Next, click on the image like the one above. Tip: To watch on your TV use an HDMI cord from your laptop to the TV, a “Chromecast” device from your Android phone to the TV, or an “Apple TV” device from your iPhone to the TV.

We are in need of Ministers to the Homebound. Homebound ministers bring the Eucharist to parishioners who, either through illness or physical difficulty, are unable to attend Mass. If you feel God may be calling you to this important ministry, please call Sue Platt 575-528-8286.

SAINT JOHN NEUMANN (1811-1860)

Feast Day - January 5

Before he was named bishop, a position he did not think he was worthy of, Father John thought of himself as a simple priest. He was born in Bohemia, which is now the Czech Republic. John was a quiet and studious boy who liked botany and

astronomy. John was accepted at the seminary, where he discovered his gift for learning languages. In addition to his native Bohemian and German, John mastered Latin and Greek for his religious studies, as well as Italian, Spanish, English, and French. Later in life, he taught himself Gaelic so he could better serve Irish immigrants in America. John, set out for America. When he arrived in New York, he had one dollar in his pocket. He was ordained by the Bishop of New York and sent to work with German immigrants who were lumberjacks in the Niagara Falls area. Father John went from camp to camp, village to village, carrying his Mass kit in a backpack. Finally a friend gave him a horse but Father John was so small that he had to climb onto a fence or stand on a tree stump to mount the horse that he named Gertrude. In 1842, John Neumann joined the Redemptorists; a missionary order of priests, and six years later was appointed the superior of the order. He became a naturalized citizen of the United States in 1848, and, in 1852, he was named Bishop of Philadelphia.
