“Business Archives & the Next Gold Rush”ICA SBA Conference, San Francisco, September 17-18, 2019The annual conference for the International Council on Archives (ICA) Section on Business Archives (SBA) in 2019 will be held September 17-18 in San Francisco, California. Set in the heart of the California Gold Rush of the 1840s near today’s Silicon Valley, we’ll explore topics from “gold standard” practices in corporate archives today to tomorrow’s new technologies harnessing data and AI. This two-day conference will be held at the world headquarters of Levi Strauss & Co. and includes visits to the Wells Fargo Museum with its stagecoach and gold nuggets; the famous HP Garage, birthplace of Silicon Valley; and an evening event at the historic Presidio of San Francisco with views of the Golden Gate Bridge.

Evening event at the Society of California Pioneers in the San Francisco Presidio, arrive before 6:30 pm to stroll around the area and enjoy the views of the Bay and the Golden Gate Bridge (self-guided walking tour Main Post Walk: 200 Years of History and Architecture). Sunset is at 7:14 pm, but civil twilight extends to 7:40 pm.

Share a taxi or Lyft/Uber. Also, the Downtown Route of the free shuttle Presidigo offers service between the Transbay Terminal, Embarcadero BART, and Union Street/Van Ness Avenue and the Presidio.

The Society has graciously extended their exhibition, Her Side of the Story, just for us. This exhibition will highlight the handwritten book by the members of The Association of Pioneer Women of California, which includes detailed accounts of their journeys to California and the ways in which these women created their new lives in the Wild West. We will have the opportunity to view these primary source documents, along with original artifacts from the collection, to gain a greater understanding of life as a woman in the 1850s.

Transportation suggestions

By public transit: Any accommodation that has easy access to the Muni F line with its historic street cars is a good bet; get off at the Levi’s Plaza stop at Greenwich and Embarcadero. The closest BART station is Embarcadero, an 18 minute walk from Levi’s Plaza.

By bike or kick scooter: Ford Go Bike and Jump Bikes both serve San Francisco with traditional and electric-assist bikes. Skip and Scoot both provide power-assisted scooters.

By car: Cabs can drop off at Levi’s Plaza on either Battery Street or Sansome Street at Filbert Street. Peer-to-peer ridesharing Lyft and Uber are also headquartered here in San Francisco. Currently the best all-day parking rate (early bird $18) is the nearby lot at Front and Green, across from the Exploratorium.
