Since the inception of the programme in 2006, Jerwood Charitable Foundation has channeled over £4.48m into the visual arts, working with more than 1784 artists, writers and curators from across the UK, supporting a wealth of research and new commissions which now reaches audiences of over 60,000 a year. Proactive and forward thinking, Jerwood Charitable Foundation works closely with specialist project partners, artists, writers and curator-led organisations to ensure that the development of the programme continues to respond to, and meet the changing needs of artists. 2018 programme highlights Opening in January, the Jerwood/Photoworks Awards presents new photographic work by Alejandra Carles-Tolra, Sam Laughlin and Lua Ribeira, exploring themes of death, belonging and the fragility of the natural world. In the adjacent School House cafe, new sculptural work by Rachel Adams is on show, the first of three Project Space Commissions that will take place throughout the year. Jerwood/FVU Awards 2018: Unintended Consequences , which opens in April, will premiere two significant new moving-image commissions by Maeve Brennan and Imran Perretta. In June, Jerwood Solo Presentations will present new work by three early-career artists, and September will see the return of Jerwood Staging Series , showcasing event-based presentations of work over a series of five special events. New to the programme in 2018 is Survey, a group exhibition that will test the temperature of contemporary visual art practice in the UK. Opening in October, the exhibition will present new work by a large group of outstanding early-career artists from across the UK, all at potentially catalytic moments in their career and selected from nominations made by over 40 regionally based, established artists. An events programme will accompany each exhibition at Jerwood Space including performances, lectures, screenings and in conversation events. Jerwood Visual Arts 2018 Programme Announcement

Jerwood Visual Arts is a national programme that provides the necessary curatorial support and well-resourced opportunities for early-career artists to make increasingly ambitious new work. Project Space Rachel Adams, Right Twice a Day 15 January – 28 Apri l 2018

Right Twice a Day is a new sculptural work by Glasgow-based artist, Rachel Adams. Its design is a culmination of features drawn from a traditional grandfather clock and The Maiden, a guillotine that was used between the 16th and 18th centuries as a means of execution in Edinburgh, Scotland. Two further commissions will be announced throughout 2018.

Jerwood/Photoworks Awards Alejandra Carles-Tolra, Sam Laughlin, Lua Ribeira 17 January – 11 March 2018

An exhibition of new photographic works by three early career artists Alejandra Carles-Tolra, Sam Laughlin and Lua Ribeira, enabled by the second Jerwood/Photoworks Awards, which responds to themes of death, belonging and the fragility of the natural world. With a bursary of £5,000 each and access to a significant production fund to make new work, the artists underwent a year of developmental support from photography specialists such as Mitch Epstein, Michael Mack and Maureen Paley plus the teams at Photoworks and Jerwood Charitable Foundation. Selected from over 350 artists following a national call for entries by Celia Davies, Director of Photoworks; Sarah Williams, Head of Programme, Jerwood Visual Arts; Anna Fox, photographer; Ori Gersht, photographer; and Mark Durden, writer and photographer.

The exhibition will tour nationally to Impressions Gallery, Bradford and Belfast Exposed, Belfast. Jerwood/Photoworks Awards are a collaboration between Jerwood Charitable Foundation and Photoworks, supported by Arts Council England and Official Print Partner, Spectrum Photographic.

Jerwood/FVU Awards: Unintended Consequences Maeve Brennan & Imran Perretta 6 Apri l – 3 June 2018

An exhibition of two new moving-image commissions by early career artists Maeve Brennan and Imran Perretta made in response to the curatorial theme Unintended Consequences. Each artist received £20,000 to develop these significant new moving-image works. At a moment when world events are so volatile and turbulent that it’s hard to predict what might happen next, the two artists’ proposals reflect the complex, entangled nature of contemporary experience.

The Jerwood/FVU Awards are a collaboration between Jerwood Charitable Foundation and FVU. FVU is supported by Arts Council England.

Jerwood Solo Presentations 20 June – 26 August 2018 Jerwood Solo Presentations 2018 will showcase newly commissioned work by three early-career artists concurrently at Jerwood Space, London.

Jerwood Staging Series 8 - 16 September 2018 An experimental series of film screenings and live events curated by Sarah Williams, Head of Programme and Oliver Fuke, Gallery Manager.

Survey 3 October – 16 December 2018 A large group exhibition exploring contemporary artistic practice in the UK, comprising newly commissioned work by outstanding early-career artists within five years of establishing their practice and at potentially catalytic moments in their career. Artists will be selected from nominations made by over 40 regionally based, established artists. The exhibition responds to a need for artists who are no longer recent graduates but still early in their careers, to benefit from a supported opportunity to make and show new work in a group exhibition format. The exhibition will be curated by Sarah Williams, Head of Programme, Jerwood Visual Arts.

WRITER IN RESIDENCE …………………………………………………………………………………………………. Nicolas Helm-Grovas January – June 2018

The Jerwood Visual Arts’ Writers in Residence opportunity was established in 2010 to critically engage emerging writers with the programme. The first Writer in Residence of 2018 is Nicolas Helm-Grovas.

Nicolas Helm-Grovas is a writer and researcher currently based in Oxford. He is a PhD candidate in Media Arts at Royal Holloway, University of London, writing a thesis entitled Laura Mulvey and Peter Wollen: Theory and Practice, Aesthetics and Politics, 1963-1983. His writing has been published in Afterimage in Moving Image Review and Art Journal and in Other Cinemas: Politics, Culture, and Experimental Film in the 1970s, edited by Sue Clayton and Laura Mulvey (London: I. B. Tauris, 2017).
