Event Foreword

Never has it been more important for the UK to focus on rebalancing the economy. The global economic crisis has raised the importance – and the opportunity - of making things in the UK. The richness of our economy is evident from the scientific capability in our Universities to the value captured from the science-based industries operating in the UK.

Economic growth is at the heart of our future and Chemistry is at the centre of our growth opportunities. The UK has a broad spread of Chemistry-using industries. This represents a vast range of products and includes the value chain from the chemicals and pharmaceuticals manufacturers to the end use of the science in our paint, household cleaning products, toiletries, cosmetics, medicines, food, cars and aeroplanes.

Based on ONS data in 2007, the EPSRC and Royal Society of Chemistry’s analysis by Oxford Economics found that the UK’s ‘upstream’ chemicals industry and ‘downstream’ chemistry-using sectors contributed a combined total of over £250 billion in value-added and support over 6 million UK jobs. In addition these industries invest over 60% of the total UK spend in

Research and Development. The chemistry-using industries are important manufacturers in the UK and contribute over 80% of the total investment in manufacturing.

The Balance of Trade is important to the UK economy and the Chemistry-using industries represent two thirds of the exports from the UK.

The future success of the Chemistry-using industries will require a strong business leadership and sustained partnership between industry and Government to ensure that we jointly create the right environment to stimulate growth.

The dialogue and partnership that I have been having with the chemistry-using industries is possible because of the success in uniting the industry with all the key stakeholders including Chemistry Innovation, the RSC, the CIA, the IChemE and the Society of Chemical Industry. This means that there is a strong consensus on key issues and action plans to make a difference – and this makes the engagement with Government effective.

Chemistry Innovation is there to support those who use chemistry in the widest sense, from making chemical ingredients to the development of natural shampoo, to understanding how to reduce the carbon footprint impacts in the lifecycle of recycled PVC.

From addressing accelerating global demand for critical raw materials to opening up the bio-based products market, we are there to provide the crucial links between academia, industry and Government. We build and support successful collaborations which generates value to the UK economy through innovation. For this year’s Annual Stakeholder Event we have invited members of our extensive network to demonstrate their innovations and to exemplify the ways in which Chemistry Innovation have worked with them.

Connecting You... We know how to connect people to the right expertise -

no matter how big or small their need

CCaLC - Lifecycle carbon footprint calculation Dr Jason Leadbitter will present on how Ineos ChlorVinyls have used the CCaLC Life Cycle Carbon Footprint tool to be able to make the case for the environmental superiority of re-cycled PVC. At the demonstration of this software, he will show a window that has been made entirely from recycled uPVC that exceeds current building regulations due to > 80% carbon savings. Chemistry Innovation supported the CCaLC project and continues to champion the tool to industry. This is a good example of connecting companies to the right expertise.

CASE Award - Whole process design capability Richard Hodgett is a post graduate researcher at Newcastle University. About to complete his PhD, Richard’s research has been to develop a decision making support system designed specifically for use during process design. Richard’s project is a

collaboration between Newcastle University and Britest, supported by Chemistry Innovation through EPSRC Industrial CASE funding. Richard has attended 3 Chemistry Innovation Associates’ Events, most recently in March 2012 where he received a prize for his poster. Richard’s presentation at the event, will introduce the challenge and solution in “Multi-criteria decision making in whole process design” and he will be demonstrating the ChemDecide tool in the demonstrator space.

Datalase - Colour change technology Datalase is a materials company with products and intellectual property in the field of colour change technology. New innovations now in development include materials for single colour and full colour in-line digital printing. The Knowledge Centre for Materials Chemistry (KCMC) has helped Datalase connect up with scientific expertise in the research institutions and facilitated and delivered projects which underpin the understanding and exploitation of the new technology. Hear more from John Mills at the event.

CPI - Scale-up capability The Centre for Process Innovation, CPI, is the Process Industry component of the High Value Manufacturing Catapult. Catapults are technology and innovation centres that work with businesses to develop and prove new technology for manufacturing processes. Chemistry Innovation works closely with CPI to help develop industry engagement plans and build a portfolio of collaborative projects. Find out more about CPI in the demonstrator area.

AMRI is a company that carries out research and development into chemical intermediates for drug development. In 2004, AMRI recognised that there could be a significant market for unnatural amino acid variants as effective intermediates for anti-viral drugs. Their traditional chemical processes were expensive, requiring rare and precious metals, and they wanted to explore whether these compounds could be produced more sustainably and cost-effectively using a bio-catalyst. For a chemistry science based company, molecular biology and biocatalysis skills and experience was a significant barrier and establishing a collaborative approach was the only way to map a path to success. Hear more from Gareth Jenkins at the event.

The Active Ingredient We don’t just advise - we get involved, fast track

processes and get results

Plasticell - Winning stem cell technologyDr. Lilian Hook (Research Director) will be telling the story of how Plasticell, a high-tech UK SME, has developed a business based on an innovative enabling technology that has become a cornerstone in stem cell research. The benefits of their award winning CombiCult® technology and the role Chemistry Innovation played in this success story will be described and demonstration of the technology will also be taking place throughout the day.

Graphene and the National Graphene Institute- Nobel prize winning science and technology The start of 2012 saw the announcement of a major UK investment in graphene research and commercialisation which includes a £38m investment for the National Graphene Institute (NGI) which will be hosted by The University of Manchester who will also play a major role in commercialisation activities. In addition £10m will be invested in Graphene Engineering Research (EPSRC), £12m for Graphene Equipment (EPSRC) and £10m for an Innovation Centre.

Graphene is a two dimensional material consisting of a single layer of carbon atoms arranged in a honeycomb or chicken wire structure. It is the thinnest material known and yet is also one of the strongest. Chemistry Innovation, through the Knowledge Centre for Materials Chemistry, is working closely with the University of Manchester to help raise awareness of the potential of graphene for the chemistry-using industries and stimulate collaboration between UK companies and the NGI. Hear more from Ivan Buckley at the event.
