From our ChairmanLadies and gentlemen, boys and girls, a very warm welcome to this year’s pantomime, Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves, written, produced and directed by Martin Smith. I would like to thank everyone that has assisted in any way with this production, and a special word of thanks to Helen Coyle, Johnny White, Emma Hunt and Stephen Greatorex for the scenery design, construction, painting, lighting and sound.Martin Smith has resurrected a script that he has written himself and brought it right up to date for our 2018 production, however some of the jokes are definitely a lot older! On behalf of the group, a very special thank you to Martin for his commitment, hard work, and dedication in producing and directing the show. From personal experience I know the number of hours that go into a job like this, and it is very much appreciated by all our members.Last year we gained two nominations at the Derby Amateur Theatre Awards, firstly for “Best Production of a Pantomime” for The Good, The Bad, and The Panto, and also our band, The 4 Herberts in the “Best Newcomer” category. Unfortunately, we didn’t win either, but it was another once again to rub shoulders with the best of Derby’s amateur theatre. This production has been entered for the 2018 Awards which will be presented at Derby Theatre on Sunday 15th July 2018. The awards evening is open to all members of the public, and feature the high quality of live amateur entertainment from the Derbyshire theatre community. Tickets available from Derby Theatre box office on 01332 593939.Last year we raised £XXXX for the Derby Stroke Association from the raffle and other events. The charity the group is supporting this year is ‘Safe and Sound’ and we trust that you will give generously to this worthy cause. Finally, many thanks to you, our audience for your continued support. Without you, we wouldn’t be here.Enjoy the show!

Directors CommentsAli Baba is one of the oldest and most traditional of fairy tales to be used as a pantomime and as such it’s a pleasure to bring our latest version of the story to you in 2018.I’ve recently returned to the Enfield Players after a break of around 12 years and I’d really like to thank the group for welcoming me back and for the great support that so many people have given me in staging this show, especially to Fraser Morton for his support in the Production and for his contributions to the script. My approach to pantomime is, where possible, to respect the traditions of panto whilst including a little contemporary material to keep things relevant to today. I hope that you, the audience enjoy what we’ve done with this production and that some of the more up-to-date references sit just as well as the very traditional aspects of the show. We’ve tried to bring you a lively and colourful family show to bring some cheer to this New Year. So please sit back and relax, cheer the heroes, boo the baddies and let yourselves be transported to the town of old Bagh-dad to meet , Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves.

Arabian Nights? The story goes that King Shahryar of Middle Persia found out one day that his first wife was unfaithful to him. A similar thing happen to his next wife, and the next, and he soon concluded that all women were the same. Therefore, he resolved to marry a new wife each day and behead the previous day’s wife, so that she would have no chance to be unfaithful to him. He had killed 1,000 such women by the time he was introduced to Sche-herazade, the vizier’s daughter.Against her father’s wishes, Scheherazade volunteered to spend one night with the king. On the night of their marriage, Scheherazade begins to tell the king a tale. The king lay awake and listened with awe as Scheherazade told her first story. The night passed by, and Scheherazade stopped in the middle of the story. The king asked her to finish, but Scheherazade said there was no time, as dawn was breaking. So, the king spared her life for one day to finish the story the next night. The following night, Scheherazade finished the story and then began a second, even more exciting tale, which she again stopped halfway through at dawn. Again, the king spared her life for one more day so she could finish the second story. And so the king kept Scheherazade alive day by day, as he eagerly anticipated the finishing of the previous night’s story. At the end of 1,001 nights, and 1,000 stories, Scheherazade told the king that she had no more tales to tell him. During these 1,001 nights, the king had fallen in love with Scheherazade. He spared her life, and made her his queen. And so were born the tales for 1001 Arabian Nights.Including, Aladdin’s wonderful lamp, The seven voyages of Sinbad the Sailor and of course, Ali Baba and the forty thieves. Our version of Ali Baba is faithful to the traditional story, with maybe one or two additions.
