In the privacy of his home in Montréal, he creates and innovates while being continuously filmed by the director. An awardee of the Sangeet Natak Akademi, Deboo’s new creation, Eternal Embrace, is an original dance inspired by the poem ‘Maati’ written by Sufi poet Hazrat Bulleh Shah. Embodying the poem's central theme, Yukio Tsuji, Japanese composer and performer has composed the original score and will perform with Deboo. Modifications made to the instrument with respect to its physical structure and the innovative performance techniques developed by him, have given the instrument its unique ‘voice’ and idiom. Such path-breaking efforts have helped the santoor acquire a position on par with other string instruments in contemporary Indian art music. Having emerged as one of the most promising santoor players of his generation, Rahul Sharma, son and disciple of Shiv Kumar Sharma, is an icon of the youth today. His cross-cultural international collaborations with world-renowned artistes like the highest selling French pianist Richard Clayderman and such others have opened new avenues to connect the younger audiences with their roots. ancient times, the Indian subcontinent has abounded in a variety of percussion instruments, of which the covered drums form a large part. Tabla, mridangam and dholak, though covered with animal hide, differ considerably with respect to their performance techniques, idioms and aesthetics, as well as the size, shape, material, timbre and their role in an ensemble. Nonetheless, they all are bound by the Indian concept of tala (rhythmic unit), which unlike in Western music, is essentially cyclic and not linear in nature. The performance seeks to bring together percussions from three music traditions: North and South Indian art music, and Indian folk music. The world-renowned percussionist Zakir Hussain and young Anantha Krishnan, grandson and disciple of the legendary mridangam maestro Palghat R. Raghu, will strike a conversation with their respective instruments, to be joined by Navin Sharma who is a disciple of Zakir Hussain’s father, the legendary maestro Alla Rakha. Sabir Khan, son and disciple of the legendary sarangi maestro Sultan Khan, will provide melodic context for the rhythmic improvisations. The ensuing explorations will elucidate the unity underlying the diversity of musical traditions. THEATRE Peechha Karti ParchhaiyanHindi Play (90 mins)Experimental TheatreSunday, 18th – 7.00 pm The play is an adaptation of Henrik Ibsen’s play Ghosts. The action is placed in Cooch-Behar, a state inhabited by Rajput families from Nepal and Rajasthan, many of them still living on their past feudal glories, clutching on to old traditions and decrepit lifestyles. The play focuses on how these out-dated traditions and their repercussions come back to haunt future generations as ghosts of the past. This is the story of the family of the late Maharaja Kunwar Viraj Bhanu Pratap Singh, whose death is shrouded in mystery, talked of in whispers and hidden in the inscrutable eyes of his widow, Yashodhara Baisaheb. The scene opens with Yashodhara and Purohitji, the family priest, who has come with a property deal for the family. The family is busy since the following day they are dedicating a school in the name of the late scion. The young son and heir, Kunwar Yuvraj, has flown down specially from Paris, where he has made a name for himself as a painter and designer. As the story unfolds, we see the causes of the breakdown of families, symbolised in the destruction of the haveli they inhabit. Adapted by Ila ArunDirected by K. K. RainaCast: Ila Arun, K. K.
