Study Trips / Seminars for Groups of Foreign Students to Germany

The programme aims at providing students with subject-re-lated knowledge by arranging appropriate visits, tours, and information meetings, or by organizing subject-related semi-nars and practical courses with universities, companies, and possibly public institutions.

University Summer Course Grants for For-eign Students and Graduates

These University Summer Course Grants are provided to sup-port students who attend German language and area studies courses offered by German higher education institutions. Courses last three to four weeks and are offered in the sum-mer months. Students in Bachelor‘s and Master‘s degree pro-grammes in any subject area with German language knowled-ge can apply for University Summer Courses.

Scholarships for Graduates from German Schools Abroad

The Sawiris Foundation for Social Development and the DAAD offer fulltime scholarships open to all study courses in Germa-ny. The programme is designed for excellent graduates of Ger-man Schools in Egypt (DEO, DSBK, DSBA, and Europa-Schule Kairo). Application requirement is a nomination by the school and a minimum GPA of 1.5.

Master’s Candidates

EPOS: Scholarships for Postgraduate Cour-ses with Special Relevance to Developing Countries

The scholarship is designed for postgraduate courses to young professionals in leading positions from developing countries with the opportunity to engage in postgraduate education and training in their particular field or profession. The typical scho-larship holder will have completed an academic degree far beyond average and at least two years of related professional experience. The duration is 12-24 months, depending on the particular institution.

Helmut-Schmidt-Programme (Master's Scho-larships for Public Policy and Good Gover-nance)

This programme is designed for academically qualified future leaders in politics, law, economics, and administration to pre-pare them in a practical-oriented course for their professional life. The scholarships are offered both for young graduates without professional experience and for mid-career professi-onals.

German Egyptian Research Long-term Scho-larship (GERLS)

The target group of this programme comprises Egyptian rese-archers holding M.A. / M.Sc. degrees which should generally not be older than 3 years. Each year a group of researchers will be sent to Germany for doctoral scholarships in the scien-tific fields and priorities agreed upon by DAAD and MHESR. The scholarships within this programme are awarded for 12 months, subject to extension up to 42 months.

Bilateral Exchange of Academics (WAP)

The Bilateral Exchange of Academics Programme is primarily intended to support the implementation of mutual teaching and research projects between German and Egyptian scien-tists. It offers academic visits to Germany ranging from 14 days to 3 months, depending on the applicant‘s work schedule and cannot be extended. The aim is to exchange in two ways, thus the Egyptian researchers are kindly requested to invite their host professors for research stays in Egypt through this programme. Applications are open to all PhD holders working at Egyptian universities or research institutions.

Leibniz - DAAD Research Fellowships

Leibniz – DAAD Research Fellowship is a new programme implemented by the “Leibniz Association” (Wissenschafts-gemeinschaft Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz) and the DAAD. The fellowships offer highly-qualified recent foreign postdocs the opportunity to conduct special research at institutes of the Leibniz-Association in Germany.

DLR / DAAD-Research-Fellowship Program-me

DLR – DAAD Research Fellowships is a programme imple-mented by the ‘Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt’ (DLR – German Aerospace Center) and the DAAD. This speci-al programme is intended for highly-qualified foreign doctoral and postdoctoral students as well as senior scientists. It offers outstanding scientists and researchers the opportunity to con-duct special research at the institutes of the DLR in Germany in the fields of aeronautics, space, transportation, and energy.

Master’s, Phd Candidates & PostdoCs

German Egyptian Research Short-term Scho-larship (GERSS)

The scholarship shall enable advanced graduate students to pur-sue part of their Master, Doctoral or Post-Doctoral research to carry out a specific research project at German universities, ar-chives, libraries, or research institutes. The scholarships may be awarded for a period from three to six months. The distribution of the monthly units will be defined by the DAAD independent selection committee per the proposals presented by the candi-dates. The number of months granted for each candidate should not exceed six months and should not be less than three months.

Re-invitation Programme for Former Scholars-hip Holders (WE)

The Re-invitation Programme helps the DAAD to maintain cont-act with its former scholarship holders (DAAD Alumni) who stu-died in Germany for at least 6 months. DAAD Alumni can apply for a re-invitation to Germany with the purpose of completing a research or work project at a state higher education institution or non- university research institute. The Re-invitation Programme offers research stays in Germany from 1 to 3 months, depending on the applicant‘s work schedule and cannot be extended. Appli-cations are open to all PhD holders affiliated to Egyptian universi-ties or research institutions.

2. InStItutIonal ScholarShIpS

German Egyptian Mobility Programme for Scientific Exchange and Excellence Develop-ment (GE-SEED)

GE-SEED aims at supporting bilateral mobility between Egyp-tian and German scientific teams with special emphasis on young scientists (Master and PhD students) and within the framework of a jointly submitted research project of a period up to two years. Faculty members, scientists and researchers should form a project team headed by a project leader. Each team should not exceed five persons.

German Egyptian Research Fund (GERF)

GERF aims to promote bilateral research cooperation between Egypt and Germany in areas of mutual interest. The bienni-al grants are intended to give researchers – including young scientists – an opportunity to address new areas of scientific research. Research results generated in these projects are to be developed into concrete applications. In addition, a further aim of the joint research fund is to help scientific networks apply for funding under EU or national funding schemes.

Higher Education Cooperation Programmes

DAAD offers a variety of Higher Education Cooperation pro-grammes which mostly focus on development of structure and curricula as well as mobility, internationalization and alum-ni networking of the universities involved. For the below pro-grammes the German partner university is the leading part in the application process and needs to upload final documents in the DAAD portal (https://portal.daad.de/). Therefore, pro-gramme descriptions and application processes are mostly available in German language. Applications can be filled in Ger-man or English language.

3. capacIty BuIldIng

DAAD Kairo Akademie

The DAAD Kairo Akademie, established in 2011, is an interdisci-plinary training academy, offering a cluster of modules to diffe-rent target groups such as prospective applicants for scholars-hip programmes, postdocs, alumni, scholarship holders as well as for academics in general. Module topics range from traditi-onal areas like „Proposal Writing”, „International Networking”, „How to Present Scientific Data”, to soft skills like „Effective Time Management” or „Teambuilding”. During the one day mo-dules, groups of about 25 participants receive intensive training on the selected subject.

UNILEAD: University Leadership and Manage-ment Training Programme

This programme is intended for junior advisors to university top leadership, (deputy) coordinators of central university depart-ments (planning, evaluation, human resources development, budget, continuing education, International offices, technology transfer etc.), task force coordinators for university reform pro-jects, coordinators of staff development units or programmes. Core elements of the course include project management, fi-nance management and human resources management as well as the development of individual reform projects. The course is highly practice-oriented and requires participants to play an active role.

DIES-Training Course Management Of Interna-tionalisation

Leibniz Universität Hannover, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), and the German Rectors’ Conference (HRK) are jointly organizing the DIES Training Course “Management of Internationalisation”. The key objective of the training course is to qualify university staff (either international office staff or higher education managers responsible for coordinating inter-national activities) from selected countries of Africa, Latin Ame-rica, the Middle East, and Asia, to manage processes and tasks of internationalisation in higher education. The programme will enable the participants to build up improved and more effective structures of internationalisation at their home universities.

4. Bilateral Master’s PrograMMes

Integrated Urbanism and Sustainable Design (IUSD)

IUSD is jointly organized by University of Stuttgart, Germany, and Ain Shams University in Cairo, Egypt. The programme structure takes an interdisciplinary and integrative approach, not only addressing questions related to sustainable city ma-nagement and energy efficient construction but also taking the economic, political, and cultural dimensions of the Ara-bic-Islamic cultural area into consideration. The scholarship is offered within the EPOS programme.

International Education Management (INE-MA)

INEMA is a joint programme of University of Education Lud-wigsburg, Germany, and Helwan University, Egypt. The pur-pose of the master programme is to develop and to provide managerial skills as well as competencies for cross-cultural challenges in education management.

Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency for the MENA Region (REMENA)

The master programme REMENA is offered by the Universi-ty of Kassel, Germany, Cairo University, Egypt, and Monastir University, Tunisia. It provides young professionals with inter-cultural competencies in addition to technical and managerial knowledge in the renewable energy and energy efficiency (RE & EE) sector.

International Water Resources Management (IWRM-MENA)

The master programme (IWRM-MENA) is jointly organized by the Cologne University of Applied Sciences, Germany and the University of Jordan in Amman, Jordan. It trains experts for bi-lateral projects in water resources management with a holistic approach considering both technical and socioeconomic pro-blems of resources use. The target group of this master pro-gramme is young professionals active in water-related fields, with some practical work experience.

Economics of the Middle East (EMEA)

EMEA is a unique master programme originally designed by the Philipps-Universität Marburg, Germany, and the Lebanese American University in Beirut, Lebanon. Lectureships

The DAAD has a long tradition of sending German educators to Egypt to teach German or other specialized fields like archi-tecture, politics, social sciences, archaeology, and many more at governmental or private universities. The application for a lectureship is jointly filed by the prospective guest lecturer and the host institution, and needs to be submitted online to the DAAD Bonn head office. After a selection process by external experts the DAAD awards the lectureship. There are long-term and short-term lectureships.

Wafedin Scholarship
