INSTIL PROGRAMMES for 2013-2014

I am pleased to introduce this year’s Institute for Teaching, Innovation, and Learning (INSTIL) programmes. INSTIL has now been operating for four years. Over this period, we have provided support and direction on teaching, learning, assessment and research on teaching and learning. We have focused on the management of learning at team and course level, and the use of technology in the curriculum. We have also provided individualised support and will continue to do so. INSTIL has added to its remit the management of module evaluations, and developed a structure for e-assessment. Over the past year, INSTIL has worked with colleagues in the University, and with partners across the sector to review its TEL strategy. A number of projects will be taken forward this year, including the development of an infrastructure for distance and blended learning. INSTIL is also managing the academic experience of international students through a set of activities and programmes that support their experience. Finally, a significant amount of our work this year is directed at supporting home and international students in their studies through workshops and direct work with course and module leaders.

As ever, we welcome ideas on how we could improve our service and any suggestion you might have for us to better engage with you and your School.

In this year’s programme, you will find initiatives that INSTIL have set-up in response to last year’s feedback, and to enhancement issues that address the University’s strategic priorities and the national agenda – student engagement; HEA Fellowship and teaching qualifications; employability; TEL; academic literacy and learning support. Our programmes are actively supported by a number of colleagues across the University who act as judges, reviewers, mentors, facilitators and supervisors inter alia. The INSTIL team is extremely grateful for this expert contribution from academic members of staff and from central services into our programmes. We always welcome newcomers to this team, so please feel free to contact us to contribute to our work.

THE DIRECTOR’S INTRODUCTION

In order to engage directly with academic teams as they work on the curriculum, in 2013-14 the TEL team will continue to work with individuals and teams in specific Schools:

Ealing Law School Susan Driver ex 2430Ealing School of Art, Design and Media

London College of Music

College of Nursing, Midwifery and Healthcare

School of Psychology, Social Care and Human Sciences

Andy Turner ex 2697

London School of Hospitality and Tourism

School of Computing and Technology

The Business School

Our local activities in Schools, and our central programme (in this brochure) cover most aspects of academic practice in a modern University – best professional practice for assessment and feedback; being a new lecturer at the University; enhancing one’s academic skills; developing research skills and expertise; using technologies; and sharing research findings in informal settings.

Whatever level of knowledge you may have on any particular topic, there should be something for all in our offering. We welcome all, and will seek to adapt our service to suit your requirements.

Gaining the UK Professional Standards Qualification (HEA)

It is one of the University of West London’s top priorities to ensure that as many members of academic staff as possible gain Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (HEA). The institutional aim is that 50% of all members of staff who teach have some level of Fellowship by the end of 2014, and 70% by the end of 2016. New members of academic staff are encouraged to complete the Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice which is a one year part-time course leading to Fellowship of the HEA.

Experienced staff who do not have an HE teaching qualification are encouraged to gain Fellowship through the HEA accredited CPD route. Throughout the academic year INSTIL runs monthly workshops on how to complete this process.

INSTIL PROGRAMMES for 2013-2014

The Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice is an introduction to teaching and learning in UK Higher Education and provides a good foundation for developing your academic career. It develops scholarly reflection on your experiences as a teacher and supportive dialogue with peers and tutors. During the course you will have an opportunity to develop a small pedagogical research project in your own discipline. The course also equips you with the skills needed to continue your professional development in learning and teaching after the course finishes. The course is accredited by the Higher Education Academy (HEA) and successful completion leads to Fellowship of the HEA. The course is also accredited by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). Nurses and midwives who complete the course are therefore eligible to obtain teacher status and to record this with the NMC.

The most effective way of understanding technology, is to work with teams– whether at School, course or module level –addressing the specific tools which academics need to understand and use. Please contact your TEL Developer/Consultant to arrange training for your team.

Topics which can be covered include:

• What’s new in Blackboard – a look at features introduced by the latest upgrade

• Making more effective use of the Blackboard VLE to engage learners

• Use of Turnitin and other tools for e-submission, e-marking and e-feedback; digital tools to enhance student communication and collaboration

• Tools to support personal development planning and reflection.

We offer introductory training for academics new to the University (including for Hourly-Paid Lecturers).

We offer seminars to individuals, groups, or by webinar, as appropriate.

We will be contributing to a regular series of INSTIL webinars during the year: look out for announcements with details of how to participate in these webinars as they happen and/or view recordings of the events.

ACADEMIC LITERACY AND LEARNING SUPPORT

Student support

Aware of the challenges students experience in Higher Education, INSTIL seeks to offer students opportunities to deepen their understanding of the learning strategies required in their studies. In order to achieve this goal, face-to-face workshops have been designed to provoke critical engagement by developing students’ critical reading and thinking, thinking about writing, writing for learning and research, for them to prepare for and complete their exams and assignments with confidence. It is a premise of INSTIL’s provision that effective writing is developed through self-awareness and reflexivity. Consequently, support will by no means be merely theoretical, but rather hands-on practical provision where students will be able to apply the skills learnt to their own work.

In semesters one and two, the Learning Support team will offer students a ten-week literacy development course, where academic texts will be analysed from a linguistic perspective and focus will be placed on raising students’ awareness and skill as regards critical reading and writing, expression, structure and argumentation in English. Stress will also be placed on time management, authorship and referencing.

This course will be available at Ealing and Brentford sites, and Fountain House on Wednesdays between 2 - 3.30pm, starting on 9 October 2013. A full programme for all three sites will be available on Blackboard.

On the last week of both semesters, one-off drop-in exam workshops will be offered to help students manage revision and confidently prepare for exams.

In semester two, a five-week dissertation writing course will also be offered to students where those interested will be given the opportunity to work through the process of planning and structuring their dissertations. Students will be introduced to research methodology, and assisted in the process of developing their proposals into well-structured dissertations.

In the summer months, writing retreats and group tutorials will be available, as well as refresher one-off workshops for those students taking resits and writing up their dissertations.

Surgery hours will be available throughout the academic year for students who would like 1:1 tutorial support.

School/staff support

The Learning Support team are also available to work in collaboration with Schools and academic colleagues to offer discipline specific support to meet the needs of students. Please let us know if you would like specific interventions in your School, or on your module. We recognise that developing educational practice takes time and we would try to facilitate the process in a number of ways. We would be happy to converse and work with you around thinking and writing by helping you (re)think and (re)design modules and assessment; develop tasks and materials; teach on a collaborative basis; run writing or reading retreats; offer practical advice; help students with writing; or simply evaluate the above – what works, what doesn’t work, how students respond...

For any information on provision, please contact Marta Firestone at [email protected]

Drop-in sessions for English language support are run on Tuesdays and Wednesday from 8 October 2013 to 28 May 2014. Students do not need to book but can come along and bring their own work to get help with their language.
