Meeting News

Steve Herron gave our inspirational thought and Eve Nighswongergreeted and introduced our visitingRotarians. We had four guests: LeroyCarlenzoli brought his wife, Carol, and John Jones brought his wife,Ardyss. Scott Holder's guest wasLeonard La Branche and Steve

Amend brought Tim Early.

Announcements:Del Raby is still looking for folks

to act as hosts for the progressive dinner we've got planned for Saturday,Nov. 1. Call him if you can help outwith this.

Jim McCracken reminded usabout the Interact Canoe trip set forthis Sunday, October 5. (Word was itwas a successful and fun trip and awhole lot of trash was picked up too. After all the paddling everyone retiredto Archie and Sue's house for a bar

becue and some sittin' around time.

And so far, no reports ofa singlesalmon feeling threatened all day.)

Pat Solar is looking for volunteers to help do yard work at the Senior Center, Saturday Oct. 25. This ispart of a program called HandsAcross the County—a big volunteerday, if you will. It was great fun lastyear, in fact, we did such a good jobthat the Senior Center requested ourclub for their project this year. AskPat if you have anyquestions.

The Fireside at the Cercone's

home is set for Thursday night, Oct.16. If you're planning to bring an"international appetizer", please callJan and let her know, but you can't dofried okra-that's already being done.Frank has handed out maps to hishome. Attending a fireside is a redbadgerequirement-come have funand learn more about Rotary.

Sunshine Report:Please keep Laura Christopher-

son, her son, and family in your

thoughts and prayers as her son has suffered a serious injury.

Fines:Three birthdays were recognized:

Ralph Harryman's, Eve Nighswonger's,and Bob Scott's. Larry Martin paid $15for his 12 "glorious" years of weddedbliss to Laura. Vicki Lockner and Russ

Lockner were individually fined for expectingtheir secondgrandchild-WHEN? - next spring. Nancy Aha finally paid the piper for her long goneanniversary--28 happyyears with Bob.

High Fives:Nancy Aita's daughter, Danielle, has

a new car—and if she passes her drivingtest at the DMV—she'll have her driver's

license, too. Nancy reminded us thatteaching your child to drive is a true testof one's love-and nerves, perhaps.

If a man answers the phone at PatSolar's home—it's her new roommate,Jeffrey Crouch - also a Rotarian - coincidence??

If a man answers the phone at EveNighswonger's-you've got the wrongnumber~or the burglar is stupid enoughto answer it. She's got a new home - andphone #539-1886.

Ardyss Jones chose the wrong marble from the bag and Randy Seelye gotthe sure $10- his face just lit up.

Visiting Rotarian, Mike Merrill, shared with us news ofhis trip to Tahiti. He was a raffle winner last year, and heLOVED his recently completed trip toTahiti.

What kinda team names are these??

T3, Wet & Wild, Wave Riders, Waterlogged, and the Conches. They are verysuccessful raffle ticket selling teamnames that are whipping up excitementabout our projects and our club. Goteams! The big raffle finale meeting willbe a Thursday evening-not breakfastmeeting, Oct. 30. Come in costume andconsider bringing a friend. Don't have acostume?? Just ask Leroy Carlenzoli-he's got enough camoflage clothing tooutfit a guerilla army. President Art already has his costume-nope, he won't

Pag&Z

say-it's a surprise.

The Program:Wow!! What an adventure this pig

hunting must be. Apparently, if you'retrying to shoot wild pigs, you don't wantthem to catch a whiff of you-cause they'lltake off in a thunderous roar tramplinganything in their path. They have verypoor eyesight, you see. Leroy showed us aspecial fragrance that can be used to maskour human scent. Yes, you too can smelllike DIRT—but for a price. Ourcamoflaged comrades, Prof. Jones andProf. Carlenzoli, have quite the arsenal ofhi tech hunting gagetry—not to mentionwardrobes that would make G. I. Jane

jealous. Peter Treleaven was convincedthat we would've won Viet Nam had our

guys been so equipped. Frank Cerconesuggested that perhaps his Ferrari is acheaper hobby than hunting. Our speakers were wonderful and entertaining-thank you, gentlemen, for NOT giving usa live demonstration of pig skinning.

stressful. That's why we don't put selling quotas on members to sell tickets.Sell what you can. Just remember thegood that we do and have fun sellingthem. This approach worked last yearand it can work again this year. Thedrawingwill be held on Thursdayevening, October 30th, and promises tobe a fun evening. I encourage those inthe mood to wear a costume. It can ei

ther be connected to the RAFFLE

theme of "Water" or just be creative.

The Raffle isn't the only Club ac

tivity during the next month. Don't for

get, our next Fireside is scheduled for

Thursday, October 16th at Frank and

Jan Cercone's house. It will have an

International theme with plenty of

home-cooked food and quality singing.

Not by us, but by those that know how

to sing.

Also, a reminder that the progres

sive dinner is scheduled for Saturday,

November 1st. It's being chaired by Del

Raby and promises to be even more fun

than last year's.

One ofmy goals this year was tohave two months of perfect attendance.

The first month is November. I picked

this month because it has only three

meetings. HOW HARD CAN THAT

BE? If we reach the goal in November,

I will put S200 into Irene's Paul Harris

and I'll pay for 4 squares on the Foun

dation Board. So, if you are going to

miss a meeting, now is the time to plan

your make-up.

Finally, welcome to Kevin Tompkins, our newest member. Please make

him feel welcome.

So, until next month, thanks to allof you for your enthusiasm, hard workand sense of humor. Let's keep havingfun!

Thursday, November 6, 1997Strange as it may seem. I don 7 have theslightest idea butlam sure it will be scintillatingand motivating. Perhaps an indepthexploration into whyourfaces arepopulatedby microscopicmites or howstars come to be or why elephants have 4knees or how the rutabaga was named or.

Stay tuned and vou will know.

Ourprogram willbe presented bySteveMiksis, CPAand managerwith Linkenheimer LLP CPA's and Advisors. Steve's presentation will beon "KidAccounts", which is a five-week program designed to teach elementary age school children basic moneymanagement concepts. The programis very interactive, with materials written to encourage children to talkabout their ideasabout money. LinkenheimerLLP are the authors and publishers of the workbook and program. A firm member attends the classroom on the first, third and fifth weeks, and the teacher is left with materialsfor follow up on weeks two and four. The follow up materials were writtenwith the help of elementary school teachers, so they are in a format that isage appropriate, and are challenging and fun.

Each child gets a copy of the programbook called Trackin' MyMoney with Lester Lynx. The book was designed to serve as both teachingtool and somethingthe children can use to incorporate the program into reallife. There is no charge to the kids or schools for the program. Linkenheimer has presented this program to nineelementary school classes and isscheduled for another 26 classroom presentations this fall.

October is Vocational Service month. What a great way for us towitness how the expertise learned in a profession can be transferred to thekids of our community. October 23 is also Bring a Friend to Rotary day.Consider bringinga child (say ages 8 to 12)and also an adult friend whomight be interested in Rotary. JohnJones

Meeting News

The October 9th meeting was, Iam almost sure, led off by somethinginspirational followed bya pledge tothe flag. Immediately thereafter, thisreporter regained consciousnesssomewhere in the middle of WillParker introducing visiting Rotarians- at least I think it was Will.

Masquerading as a visitor, andbearing only a slight resemblanceto apast president of the club, was RandySeelye, sansbeard. If fooled me butnot eagle-eyed President Art.

DanLambert's daughter Andreawasvisiting with Danafter3 years inJapan. The Japanese experience wasa direct result of Andrea's trip toJapan several years ago with theSRKSEP program. Welcome backAndrea.

Eve introduced Merle Hayes tothe club and welcomed her to the clubas a new member. The club rosterwasjettisoned this week so I am going to giveMerle her inaugural oneline entryright here until next weekwhen she canjoin the rest ofus.H»yo Male 523*226 H 525-9962 O Professional Cooch

Art announced the regular boardmeeting on Tuesday, October 14,usual timeand place. Dependingonwhen you getthisbulletin, this is either a last minute notice to attend oran embarrassing reminder that youforgot

Archiegaveus a report on thecanoe trip downthe Russian River.About 16or 17 paddlers turnedoutIt was a bunch of fun I was told, aswas the barbecue afterward at Archieand Sue's house in Healdsburg. I arrived just in time to make suretheyhadn't trashed the newly remodeledJulian house. They didn't. In fact itlooked even better than the way Idrew it. I guess Art found out I hadsomething to do withthe plans and itcost me $10.00. Cost Archie too. That didn't seem right to me, theybeing such good clients and all. Itonlyseemed fair, sincetheirhandiwork on the house made me look so

good, that I pick up the extra $5.00.The word was put out that volun

teering to host a courseof the progressive dinner didn't mean a lot of workand food preparation. Just setting thetable and clearing it off at the end of theevent (or the end of the month, dependingon yourhousekeeping routine).

Pat Solar was looking for volunteersto do some work at the Senior Center onSaturday, October 25 from 9-12a.m.The sign-up sheetwassentaround but ifit didn't get to your table, give Pat a calland volunteer to help if you can.

have been a lifelongdream of anywife,to visit both the Basketball and BaseballHalls of Fame on an anniversary trip.He and Kathy did just that, going toMaine, New Hampshire, Vermont, NewYork and who knows where else, andbringing back some Rotary banners inthe process.

Gary wentto Montana, hada greattrip, saw all the fall colors which fadedto white - snow - which was when heleft and came back to the comfort ofSonoma County.

Mystery Rotarian

I've known a lot of people in myday, but very fewthat were bred and born in Mountain View.

Our MR is such a person, but did you know, this MR was raised in Cupertino.

After High School he was wondering what to do,When he felt the draft, hard and heavy. He went to work building tanks, for FMCand avoided becoming a Viet Nam draftee.

Then to work for IBM, making things hard and thin.Heproduced them so they would quickly spin.Theysaid; "Come be a part ofmanagement."He replied; "I'm done here." and endedhis IBM stint

In the land of the Big Sky he worked for Norwest Banko. He had a large territoryand was always on the go.He finished his duties and was asked to take a trip, one way,to Omaha, or Deluth, to work for pay.Youguess it. He said, probably just whatyou'd say."I'm outta here, I'm going back to San Jose."

He is a family man, with a wife, 2 daughters and a son,He says with them he always has lots of fun.At their ages, if things just happen to be,all of his family couldbe attending college simultaneously

Lessons from the Geese

As each goose flaps its wings, itcreates an "uplift" for the bird following. By flying in a "V" formation, thewhole flock adds 71% more flyingrange than if each bird flew alone.Lesson: People whoshare a commondirection and sense ofcommunitycanget where theyaregoing quicker andeasier because theyare travelingonthe thrust ofone another.

Whenevera goose falls out offormation, it suddenly feels the dragand the resistance of trying to flyalone and quickly gets back into formation to take advantage of the liningpowerof the birds immediately infront. Lesson: if wehave as muchsenseas a goose, we willjoin informations with those who are headed

where we want to go.When the lead goose gets tired, it

rotates back into the formation andanother goose flies at the point position. Lesson: Itpays to take turnsdoingthehardtasks andsharing leadership- withpeople, as withgeese -interdependent withone another.

The geese in formation honkfrom behind to encourage those upfront to keep up their speed. Lesson:We need to makesure our honkingfrom behindis encouraging- notsomething less helpful.

When a goose gets sick orwounded or shot down, two geesedrop out of formation and follow theirfellow member down to help and provide protection. Theystay with thismember of the flock until he or she

either is able to fly again or dies. Then they launch out on their own, with another formation, or to catch upwith their own flock. Lesson: Ifwehave as much sense as the geese,we'll stand by one another like theydo.

"Sunrise Rotary Members,I haverecently graduated from ElsieAllen High School. I receivedan award and a

thousand dollar scholarship for myacademic performance fromyour organization. This generous sum will be a tremendous help in furthering myeducation. I plan to attend Santa RosaJuniorCollege fortwo yearsand transferto a university that provides a strong businesspsychology program. I am pursuing a career inmediation asa result of four great years ofConflict Management in high school. I became good at assisting people in resolving theirdifferences, whether it wasan argument that started in class and carried over to a physical confrontation at lunch, or a rumor that one person started about another. I can not express thesatisfaction that comes from a successful mediation. There is relief on all sides when a sessionis completed. At least ninety-five percent of thedisputants did not truly wish to be angrywith each other and felt extreme relief when the burden was lifted from them. I enjoyed thisexperience greatly and plan to takeit to thecorporate level as a profession.

Your generous donation will go a long way at the Junior Collegeas the averagecostpersemester is around three hundred dollars. I promise to keep myendof the deal. Yourmoney will not have been wasted butwill bean investment. It isa great honor and privilegeto receivethis prestigious award and scholarship funds. Thank you once again.

Sincerely,Emilio Garcia

Dear Mr. Editor

I search in vain for someone who felt the earthquake Monday night/Tuesday morning. I have been selfmedicating recently and if I don'tsomeone to corroborate my story, andsoon, I may haveto conciuue that i am over prescribing.

Shakin' or shaken?

Dear SOS,Yup! Ifelt it too; a bump and then a bumplette ataround 12:22 a.m.. Infact, I was

a little afraid the bump may actually upend my own selfmedication glasswhich I hadjustsetdown next to the bed. Since I havealso wondered about my owndosagesandthe efficacy ofsame, perhaps weshould seeka third, andindependent, witness.

EDITOR'S COLUMN:

All this talk about El Nino has meworried. Of course, it has to be said that Itend to worry too easily and too readilysometime.

Sometimes I start my day worryingthat that high tech tooth paste dispensernext to the sink is malfunctioning anddispensing far too muchof the breathfreshening, germ and bacteria killing bluestuff and not nearly enough of the plaquecontrolling, cavity preventing white stuff. The imageof dead and dyinggermsandbacteria hanging around all that plaqueand filling the expanding holes in myteeth is justifiable cause for concern. Atleast, so it would seem to me. Distressingeven to the most hearty and resoluteamong us and even if we do have greatsmelling breath.

Today, with the confluence of thetalk of El Nino and thoughts of the rafflewith a first price trip to Tahiti, I also findreason to worry. My concerns turn naturally enough to wondering what happensif the worst happens and the awesomenatural power ofEl Nino decides to takeout Tahitian beaches just to confound ourmeager human attempts at fundraising.

I cari't help but be reminded of thebig fundraiser that the Amish had plannedback in Ohio many years ago. It seemsthere was an important need for raisingsome money so they decided to raffle off01' Maybelie, a particularly outstandingand highly regarded mule that belongedto Brother Caleb.

The mule was is the prime of its lifeand its reputation as a good and honestmule was well know throughout the community. Tickets sales were going greatand in the first two weeks of the raffle,559 tickets were sold for $5,260, a ratewhich we are matching exactly (as coincidence would have it). Unfortunately, inthe middle of the sales period, BrotherCaleb went to the bam one morning "and

found 01' Maybelie deaderthana boot"as he latertoldall theotherelders who had beensummoned to discuss theirdilemma.Therewas a great dealof concern aboutwhatto do. 01' Maybelie wasgone and noonecouldchange that. Theystillneeded the

money and noone could change thateither. There were two more weeks to run until the bigconvocation they had scheduled todraw thewinning ticket and to sendOP Maybelie off to hernewhome. Andon topof that, therewere a lot of tickets leftto sell. Theyknew everyone wouldbe greatlydisappointedto hear of such a sad endingto what had started out to be such a great idea.

It was BrotherArt who finallyspoke up and proposedthe answerthat seemed to satisfyeveryone. Knowing how it woulddistresseveryone if they found outnow, 01' Maybelle's untimely demise would bekept secret until after thedrawing ofthewinning ticket Thatway, said Brother Art, theywould onlyhaveto disappoint oneperson instead ofeveryone.

I don't knowabout you, but I would be happyif I didn't have to hearanother wordabout El Nino for the rest of the year. I don't needthe additional worry. If that is not possible, please let mehearnothing about ElNino, or its consequences, real or imagined, forat least10more days; until after October 30 at least. Until then, think good thoughts about Tahiti and remember01' Maybelie. She was a goodmule.

IF I HAD IT TO DO ALL OVER

If I had my life to live over, I'd try to make more mistakes next time.I would relax. I would limber up.

I would be crazier than I've been on this trip.I know very few things I'd take seriously any more.

I would take more chances. I would take more trips. I would scalemore mountains. I would swim more rivers

and I would watch more sunsets.

I would eat more ice cream and fewer beans.

I would have more actual troubles and fewer imaginary ones. You see, I was one of those people who lived prophylactically and

sensibly and sanely, hour after hour and day after day.Oh, I've had my moments, and if I had to do it all over again,

I'd have many more of them.In fact, I'd try not to have anything else, just moments.

One after another, instead of living so many years ahead ofmy day.I've been one of those people who never went anywhere without a

thermometer, a hot water bottle, a gargle, a raincoat and a parachute. If I had it to do all over again, I'd travel lighter,

much lighter than I have.I would start barefoot earlier in the spring, and stay that way later in the

fall. And I would ride more merry-go-rounds, and catch more goldrings, and greet more people, and pick more flowers,

and dance more often ...

If I had it to do all over again. But, you see,

I don't.

Meeting News

Carl Jacobson led us offwith the pledge and John Dolin-sek appealed to the higher powers for baseballon grassin the sunshine. Hard to argue with that. Steve Olsenintroduced the visiting Rotarians and it sure seemed to

me that Larry Ford could have been a past district governor too, even ifhe wasn't.

Frank Cercone (and Jan, in Absentia) was thanked forhosting an enjoyableFireside. (Where is absentia anyway? Seemslike a lot ofpeople go there!) Anyway, sounds like it was a greattime thanks to other folks too who brought food and good times.

Del announced that 22 homes will be hosting progressivedinner partyers on November 1. Sounds like a great event shapingup. Did we have to get a permit or anything fromthe countytoorganize sucha monstrous event? Seeyou Saturday night. Moreinstructions to follow.

Dave Brown is going to have his very own back fixed.Good luck to him and a speedy recovery, we all hope. Art „,remindedus of the upcoming Perfect AttendanceMonth inNovember. That is the goal and we all have our buddiesto helpaccomplish same. See the list at right. Nancy toldus again about the raffle tickets sales for the Support OurSchools Program. She is also looking for volunteers towork the Christmas Faire. Call Nancy for details.

Jim McCracken made a presentation to DarrenBenefield,Interact Member from Elsie Allen High, and made him our firstStudentof the Month. Art took the opportunityto presenta checkfor $400.00 to the club's treasury in appreciation for their contribution to last summer's successful golf tournament.

John Jones is celebrating a birthday (10/24/97), possiblypig hunting. Steve Herron wasoff to Las Vegas andalso coveredin the Business Journal for the Economic Vitality Partnership.Keith Taylor wasvacationing in Phoenix, and before that inEngland. Jerry was offwork for two weeks, vacationing at home andLake Tahoe. And Randy Seelye finished with a Rotary Minute.Details later when there is more space.

Paq&ZThe Rotarian said it is a Philippine superstition

that a mole on your forehead or nose meansgood luck in business. I can't figure out how

they keep the little bugger up there long enough towork, or how they keep him from scratching.

Mystery Rotarian

I've never met a man who has gone so far,as to purchase car after car after car.His autos are small models to be exact, which he keeps polished & shinedand that's a fact.

Bred, born and reared in the mid west, this MR has worked in foreign countries, no less. His first foreign job was real thrill,he becamea RegionalManager in San Paulo, Brazil,For a company called Perkins Enginesthe companysold motors of all kinds.

He says to travel is a lot of fun and really cool,If one can travel without a schedule, and let the interest of the moment be the rule.

Recently, he and his wife went on a drive,"... from here to Nova Scotia." he said with pride. They went without itinerary, that's for sure, and enjoyedtraveling without being on tour.

His met his "...first and last wife." at Antioch,a collegewhere she stole his heart, from the very start. She is a native Guamian and her name is Carman.

They strolleddown the aisle to the alter where they did stand. And came back each with a new ring on their left hand.

He taught Finance, but will not take a chance,on stocks and bonds because he can't decide, which to buy, sell or let ride. However, he did confide, that his wife invests best, and to her it's a point ofpride.

He told a cute story about selling commercial real estate, while studying for his masters and Ph.D. at Arizona State.Seems he could not sell property until he had time to investigate, and learn if it would the best land or building site make.

Each day, he doesn't plan to do a lot,but free time, a lot he has not.He reads four magazines a month all about cars, which is better than hanging out in liquor bars.

Now you have the clues,So make your guessor choose to lose. Archie Julian
