In the current scenario, there is added

pressure on business units in every

organization. Do they clearly know how and

where they are creating or adding value to the

organization? Good decision making and

performance management are key to

business which adds a value generation.

The corporate focus is on IT costs which is

often driven by the enterprise-wide mandate

to 'do more with less' and growing demands

for compliance and governance- led

transparency. How do Business Intelligence

(BI) and Corporate Performance Management

(CPM) solutions help organizations? BI and

CPM enable organisations to answer three

key business questions:

These largely equate to: scorecarding,

reporting & analysis, and forecasting. Most

organisations do, of course, have systems in

place to measure and monitor aspects of

business performance, but all too often, these

systems stop at the Finance department. BI

and CPM extend this practice to other areas of

the business,and provide operational

managers and employees with actionable

business intelligence, i.e., information that is

both relevant and timely.

?"How are we doing?”

?"Why are we doing this?”

?"What should we be doing next?”

Business Intelligence in Retail

Businesses Intelligence was significantly used in merchandising, marketing, logistics, store operations, call center staffing, etc. in which retailers adopted BI tools and software for analyzing operational data to maximize the Return on Investment (ROI).

- Retailers have exploited the utmost value of BI by analyzing the past performance, customer behavior and demand pattern that helps in pricing products for maximum profitability taking account of the seasonal demand change. Better data analysis maximized profits that also enabled efficient use of manpower in all production sectors by minimizing any additional cost.

- This job is to understand the customer's behavior towards a particular product. Retailers studied market trends by dividing areas into different segments or categorizing products according to different groups of customers. This better-defined targeted campaign reduced operational costs and increased sales, thereby revenue.

- A better forecasting of any change in customer's demand lead to enhanced productivity by managing product price, promotion and manpower.

Business Intelligence has proved to be beneficial in overall management including

Asset and finance management deals with actuarial, underwriting functions, policy and customer claims. All these are important components in the business process and were done with proper calculation and analysis by using various BI tools. With a varied application from corporate management to CRM, BI is now one of the integral parts of the decision making process. After accessing data from various sources, BI tools were used to find out the best customers, their requirements after analyzing data from various related fields.

Business Intelligence

in Pharmaceutical Industry

Pharmaceutical companies manufactured medical products

according to requirements, which needed to have all

information regarding medicine and all medical products.

Companies first pointed out the product that was in demand

for a particular disease and sought the assistance of physicians

and professionals who prescribed the drugs. Here, the

company wanted to collect as much information about these

professionals with their specialties, preferred treatments,

prescribing history, etc. So they collected all this information

from various sources either by their own sales representative

or data from the Internet. Therefore, they opted for Business

Intelligence (BI) tools for generating a better information

management environment for data analysis and decision-

making.

Benefits of implementing BI reduced the overall operating

cost by decreasing the cost of

CE Business Intelligence in Hospitals

The healthcare industry whether hospital or any pharmaceutical companies

faced a large amount of data flow that needed to be managed in real-time -

patient flow, emergency department and maintaining & tracking all immediate

events.

As an example, there were 10 patients in ED out of which 2 were for X-ray, 3 had

pending labs and 5 were just admitted, so as soon as a bed became available,

one patient was transferred immediately to vacate the Emergency Room. But,

this required data based on our daily work process. So it became essential to

maintain that information wirelessly or manually for managing work flow with

updated information about patient treatment. Hospital Business Intelligence

information was made accessible to every staff member that made it much

easier for rapid action. However, like any other enterprise, healthcare also

needed cross organizational data gathering. For instance, determining the

number of patients suffering a particular disease and in a particular area, which

helped in understanding the cause of the outbreak and provided an analytical

display image of real time trends.

Implementations by Verticals in India in 2010

Role of BI in Telecom

Business Intelligence is now broadly used in the telecommunication industry

in HR, finance, sales/marketing, Operations, etc. Its application is valuable in

several ways:

?Enabled in building a strong sales and marketing strategy by understanding

information on different perspectives like area, time and product. This in turn

assisted in estimating revenue, volumes and margin of profit.

?Helped in categorizing customers into segments according to their behavior

and demography, which is most important for CRM. So, companies were able

to launch accurate marketing campaigns and improved ability to target new

customers.

?Tracked the performance of the campaign within a period of time that is

essential for improving marketing skills.

?Continually monitored the behavioral changes of customer so that companies

were immediately able to respond with adequate measures.

CE Case Study

It wasn't long ago when companies invested in Information Technology (IT) just to remain competitive.

From an IT textbook taught at a Canadian University, today you would find boards of directors have finally

realized they have to bite the bullet and fund these huge multi-year projects just to remain competitive.

Those days are over. Business is back in the driver's seat. As IT projects have a bad reputation for being over

budget, not on time and not generating the expected results, senior management is not going to proceed

with IT projects unless there is a compelling business case. Sometimes the compelling business case is that

you don't have a choice. For example, your existing system is no longer supported or your business has

changed. Still, there could be a big spread between the low and high ends of the potential solutions. How

do you justify the higher end solution if that is the one you think is best for your company?

The fashion group decided they needed the capacity to process a huge variety of

information (sales, purchases, accounts, manufacturing, logistics) gathered from different nations within

a single integrated Corporate Performance Management context, replacing a whole range of different

procedures created in Excel spreadsheets which were revealing severe limits in practicality, security and

data traceability.

?They needed to compare and monitor retail performance between approximately 190 stores across

23 different countries.

Solution

?BI & CPM Toolkit (new implementation)

Usage

?The fashion group chose BI & CPM Toolkit

?The use of BI & CPM Toolkit gradually expanded throughout the company

F Used to track the movement of stock and provided the ability to forecast returns and

analyze component and manufacturing costs

F Uses BI & CPM Toolkit to analyze the data for both group and subsidiary sales orders and

revenue

F Monitor sales figures from stores all over the world, profit & loss in each store and

calculation processes to determine break-even points

FManagement Control and Profitability Analysis

F Individual business units can now look at operative consolidation of analytic

accountancy data to monitor variants from budget data

Results

?In under three months, they were able to complete a highly successful monitoring project on

management and budgeting

?Within a year, they had managed to centralize and consolidate data in a single integrated Corporate

Performance Management and Business Intelligence system, where historically we used Excel and

Access: an enormous advance in terms of unequivocal information security and operative efficiency

?The client successfully implemented the project in 15 different countries simply by providing telephone

training for program users, without any complaints or problems

How Organizations Are

Using Mobile BI Now

Current mobile BI offerings are

applications that include full interactivity

within the mobile application in order to

perform BI functions. Not only can users

view and share information but they can

also interact with and analyze data,

creating reports and charts as needed.

With an increasing expectation that

employees will take their work with

them, the ability to analyze information

anywhere and gain insights into what is

happening within the organization - and

make decisions on the fly while at offsite

meetings or with clients - becomes an

essential job function. Data collected

from mobile devices and transferred

back to the organization can be pushed

directly into BI solutions to provide right-

time analysis capabilities and up-to-date

information from employees in the field.

Two things have happened since BI

applications were first introduced to

mobile devices. First, the always-on

connectivity of 3G wireless networks has

improved to the point that a mobile

device has become a reliable business

tool. Second, the iPhone has set a new

standard for multi-touch interactivity

with mobile devices that consumers,

who are also business users, have

become quickly accustomed to.

Future of Mobile BI

The current use of mobile BI and its adoption within organizations is still very young.

Although full BI solutions that can be deployed on mobile devices exist, the actual use of

this technology is in its infancy. Solution providers will still announce new offerings into

the next couple of years to catch up with competitors who are trying to meet the needs of

their customers who are early adopters. This means that, not only will the availability of

mobile BI increase, so will its interactivity. The development of access to BI reports and

charts will not be enough to satisfy users. Solutions will require the ability to pull data

from multiple sources, analyze and interact with the data, as well as write data back to the

appropriate data stores.

As social media is shaping the way people and organizations interact with each other and

outside entities, BI applications must mimic these uses to maintain and increase the value

they provide to organizations. One way this is done is through mobile BI. Mobile Bi

applications enable organizations and decision makers to share information regularly, no

matter what the physical location is, and interact in a way that is conducive to social

networking. As solutions and use matures, mobile BI will become an extension of an

organization's current BI use.

Mobile BI

From the highest executive ranks to field sales

and service people, today's knowledge workers

are roaming far from their desktops. The

question is, can all those employees be as

connected, well-informed and productive

while away from the office as they are when

seated in front of a desktop computer? As far as

business intelligence software providers are

concerned, the answer is a resounding "yes",

but they're not banking on all those workers

toting around laptops. "Smart phones" are

already the business platform of choice for road

warriors, and given current replacement cycles

and advances in technology, it won't

be long before these,

e-mail-, Web- and

compute-capable

devices become a

ubiquitous business

tool.
