PROJECT: ‘ONLINE PUBLICATION’

Aim and Purpose: The aim and purpose of unit 9 and 10 is to provide you with an opportunity to develop a focused understanding of the characteristics and context that define media and communication activity and the means by which the audience for that activity might be reached and addressed. Both units require from you thorough investigation and exploration of your chosen media activity and design that has specific audience in mind. Scenario: The purpose of this project is to allow you to investigate the competitive market of online publications, develop focused understanding of how media audience is targeted for a specific product and to explore range of skills and ideas for your own online project. Part 1 research: You are required to research and analyze a range of existing media publications, print and online and conduct thorough research into your target audience. You must produce a consumer profile board to demonstrate an understanding of your target audience using the profiling techniques taught in class. Part 2 ideas development: You will conduct research into range of ideas for your own online project and produce a mood board and a flat plan for your publication final idea. Part 3 production: You will produce the final version of your online product following industry standard conventions. Part 4 evaluation: You will analyze the effectiveness of the solutions you have provided throughout the production process as well as how did the project inform your personal development. TOP TIP – LATERAL THINKING! To gain the higher grades you need to avoid a bland publication on the obvious subjects: football, fashion and music. Your product has to fill a gap in the market so requires original ideas. For example if music is your passion then how is music used to alter moods in stressful environments? For example, prisons and hospitals. McDonalds have introduced classical music as it encourages more acceptable behaviour.

Page 3: PROJECT 1: ‘ONLINE PUBLICATION’ · 1. Research / Pre – production 2. Production 3. Post Production As with previous projects you will keep and post all the evidence of the process

• This project requires you to work independently to plan and produce an online version of

the product of your choice. You will come up with your own concept for the publication including a title.

• At the initial stage of the project you will be involved in researching existing publications

and most importantly finding out the right audience and need for your own product. You will also experiment with range of skills and techniques to be able to execute your project to near professional standard. These experiments will be logged on your blog to demonstrate what you have learnt from the ongoing practical workshops.

• Throughout production process you must record and critically analyze the effectiveness of

different processes and techniques and problems and solutions that you have encounter. You will reflect on how you dealt with technical problems, management problems (of the project, your time) and emotional problems.

• In addition to the practical application you will need to demonstrate an ability to work

according to safe working practices that are required in a professional workplace. This will be evidenced through your professional conduct and assessment of risks that can be present throughout production.

• You should proof read your work before you submit. This will give you the chance to

check for any spelling or grammatical errors. You should also take a professional approach to your work; remember plagiarism (coping) work from any sources is not acceptable. This has to be your own work so make sure you reference all your sources (Harvard referencing).

Page 6: PROJECT 1: ‘ONLINE PUBLICATION’ · 1. Research / Pre – production 2. Production 3. Post Production As with previous projects you will keep and post all the evidence of the process

The project will be divided into three parts:

1. Research / Pre – production 2. Production 3. Post Production

As with previous projects you will keep and post all the evidence of the process of your work on your personal Blog or Google Drive (to be advised). Week 1 – 4 (11 September - 2 October 2019) Research and Pre - production In those four weeks you will research – plan and investigate skills required for the production of an online publication. You will keep weakly blog / diary of planning, problems and solutions that you have investigated and tried out in preparation for the project. The work that will need to be covered in this part of the unit is:

• Existing publication front cover and content analysis • Audience research and analysis of readership figures • Ideas development (you should come up with ideas for three different types of publications) • Justification for the final idea (this will come as a result of your SWAT analysis of each idea and an audience

research for each idea). Ideas research

• Show evidence of ideas research and development. This should include research evidence for your own front cover

• Research evidence for the content page (inspirational page designs), Research on range of page spreads and designs

• Research on existing video reviews • Research on existing reviews and feature articles (look for different style of writings). • Produce a mood board and a flat plan for your magazine layout and a content.

2 October 2019 PITCH – TO TAKE PLACE IN CLASS (time to be confirmed) Prepare a 15 minute presentation using PowerPoint to ‘sell’ your idea to the class. Think ‘Dragons Den’! Your idea needs to be original and fill a gap in the market. This pitch will contribute to your final grade. If you are not able to attend the presentation, you must give a valid reason in writing to Alma Kopric 7 days prior to the pitch and submit your PowerPoint prior to 2 October 2019 via GoogleDrive. Failure to either attend the presentation or submit your work will result in your final grade being capped at a merit. Week 5 and 14 (9 October – 18 December)

Production • Work covered in this part of the unit: • You will show development of the production process of your publication. • You will produce and publish the final version of your product.

Week 16 (Final deadline 15 January 2019)

Evaluation / project presentation Work covered in this part of the unit: • Once your project has been completed and uploaded on your blog you will need to analyze the effectiveness of the

solutions you have provided throughout the production process as well as how did the project informed your personal development.

• This should be in form of report between 1000 – 1500 words posted on your blog.
