BillboardMcDonald’s is known for their immense amount of advertising of the “Golden Arches.” This billboard is different, yet effective in their advertising. Something that really catches the eye is the almost three- dimensional look of the cups against the dark background and how the rim of the cups are above the rectangle billboard. The one single word on each cup also catches your eye and is effective as they all rhyme and makes it seem like their product is the very best.

Book CoverThe Hunger Games Trilogy written by Suzanne Collins is a dystopian series about a girl named Katniss who has to fight for her life in an arena for entertainment. Each book has a symbolic representation of a mockingjay. These book covers are simple, but futuristic looking. Each cover has an accurate representation of the mockingjay that is really the main message of the novel.

Magazine CoverThis image quickly draws you into the young women pictured, particularly her piercing eyes. There is emphasis on the eyes because of the color contrast and the stark direction she is looking. Throughout the photo the colors are dark, neutral, but her eyes are much brighter compared to the rest. This magazine cover appeals to pathos, because they are trying to convey what war is doing in Afghanistan and you see this women with alert eyes, staring right at you almost as if begging for help.

Purchased ProductCheerios is a very well known product and part of the reason is through their professional advertising. The colors they chose, yellow and red, are perfect colors for food products because they are supposed to make you hungry. They have pictures of their actual product on the box, making it easy to know what you are getting. The heart shaped bowl also supports their mission of lowering cholesterol and being heart healthy.

Vintage AdvertisementThis image is particularly targeted to stay-at-home moms. The target audience is clearly shown through the clear, yet beautiful fonts, the product itself you cook with, and the two little kids eating their delicious cake. It also advertised how simple it is to cook with- individually wrapped, no cutting, no shaving. All you have to do is melt. Moms love clean and quick.

Argumentative PhotoThis is a photograph of the German soldiers marching into Poland on September 1, 1939, the official start of World War II. The formation the soldiers are walking in and the angle that this photo taken makes it seem so repetitive and like the soldiers will never stop marching in. The image appeals to pathos because you can see each one of the men’s faces and see the stern, straight faces looks they all have. This photo argues and is a representation of the length and the destroying depth of the war.

EthosThis advertisement appeals to ethos because Marilyn Monroe is saying she uses Lustre-Creme Shampoo. The advertisement is effective because Marilyn Monroe is known for her short. blonde curls and her red lips, and both are focal points and emphasized in this picture. She is holding a bottle of Lustre-Creme Shampoo in her hand and looks so happy, making you think “if she loves this shampoo, then so will I.”

PathosThis advertisement for the Pedigree Adoption Drive uses the pathos appeal very well. They have a close up photo of a pug with big, brown, persuasive puppy dog eyes that makes you want to take care of it right away. Even more than that, there is a wire fence in front of it, signifying that it is being held back from things that it truly needs and deserves. There is also an emotional story with vivid description about how he waits and wants a family to adopt him and love him.

LogosThis photograph appeals to logos because there are multiple facts and statistics letting you know what is now available in a McDonald’s Happy Meal. There is a chart at the top comparing the old Happy Meal to the new Happy Meal. The logical arguments of less sugar, calories, sodium, etc. makes the Happy Meal more healthy, and therefore more appealing.

Political CartoonThis political cartoon effectively shows the time and the political focus in the U.S. very accurately. As soon as 2016 came, the entire focus changed to the presidential candidates for the election in November of that year. In this picture it shows 2015 being kicked out and 2016 marching in as a prominent political face at the time, Donald Trump, the republican presidential candidate.

Holiday AdvertisementThe words on this advertisement are the first thing that your eye goes to. It is a word play off of one of the most classic and well known Christmas songs in history, “Jingle Bells.” But instead pringle was used, making the name of the the product the focal point and this ad memorable. This was an advertisement for Christmas time, so the product arranged in the shape of a Christmas tree made it very festive.

University WebsiteThis university website page is effective through its simpleness and professionalism. The very first thing that you see is the definition of excellence and a photo of a student with graduation attire on. This tells you a lot about the school’s mission statement and expectations for a student. The colors that are used are appealing to the eye and the font is easily readable.

Company LogoThe logo of Target is one of the most well known logos for any store in North America. The bullseye or “target” is representing that Target has exactly what you need. Target tried their logo many different ways- script writing, a bullseye with three red rings around it, a woman with bullseye earrings, a dog with the circle around his eye, etc. But after many attempts they came to the conclusion that this logo was the most recognizable and simple for their mission.

Rule of ThirdsWith the Rule of Thirds, the goal is to have the focal points of the image where the dividing lines of thirds would cross. As you can see in the photograph, the focal point of the sun is towards the top left corner, where two dividing lines would intersect. The other focal point is the small boat is the ocean, which is also where two lines would intersect. Also the horizon line separating the water and the sky divides the image into thirds.

BalanceThis photograph is very unique in its presentation of balance, because not only is the photo symmetrical with the two flamingo’s necks horizontally, but there is also a balance vertically with the way the reflection is shown across the top of the water.

RhythmRhythm is a photographic design element showcased in this photo by the way your eye moves across the image. Not only is the placement of colors appealing to the eye and moves your focus from one side of the picture to the other, but up and down motion the colored pencils were arranged in moves your eye up and down like a musical beat or pattern.
