CE 40270: Reinforced Concrete Design Fall 2012 Five Story Office Building An Integrated Design Project Building type: The project involves the structural design of a five-story office building. Structural system: A reinforced concrete frame with a one-way slab and beam floor system will be used. The selection of column locations and framing arrangement is arrived at during the preliminary design stage to satisfy both architectural and structural requirements. Design material properties: Concrete compressive strength, f’ c = 4,000 psi (at 28-days) Steel yield strength = 60,000 psi Design specifications: ACI 318-11. Project policy: 1. The project will be conducted by 18 teams of two students and 1 team of three students. 2. In each team, one student will be Designer 1 and the other(s) will be Designer 2. 3. Each designer will conduct a complete design of his/her structure. Designer 1 will design the structure shown in Figures 1 and 2, and Designer 2 will design the structure shown in Figures 3 and 4. The only difference between the two structures is the span dimensions. 4. Team members are encouraged to talk to each other, however each student is responsible for the design of his/her structure and must complete the entire report on his/her own (e.g., sharing of design drawing files or design calculation codes/spreadsheets is not allowed). 5. Non-team-members are not to consult each other about the project. 6. Each student will submit a complete report of his/her design. The report should conform to the standards of good engineering practice. Refer to policy on homework problems for guidelines. Project deliverables: Each student will prepare a detailed report as part of the project. The project report should include the following sections. Project Cover Table of Contents Abstract This section should include a brief summary (one or at most one-and-half pages) of the contents, procedures, findings, results, main conclusions, and recommendations of the report. Tell what was done, why it was done, and how it was done. The abstract should enable the busy reader to decide whether the report merits further reading.

Introduction Bring the reader up-to-date on your subject. Give a little background. Explain briefly

what the project covers and what the reader can expect to get out of it. Two or three pages with a few figures (such as structural plan and elevation views) are usually sufficient. Design

Here is where an overview description and discussion of your structural design goes. Figures for the design (reinforced concrete section details, longitudinal and transverse reinforcement details for the slabs, beams, and columns, reinforcement splice and cut-off locations, etc.) should also be presented here. Your discussion should include the following sections.

- Loads (need to estimate slab thickness). - Estimation of column sizes (needed to determine clear-spans of beams and slabs

from face-to-face of the supports). - Slab design. - T-beam design for flexure. - T-beam design for shear. - Bond, anchorage, development length calculations, and reinforcement detailing. - Crack control. - T-beam deflection control. - Column design.

Summary and conclusions

State what you found out or did. Provide a list of major conclusions in order of their importance. Recommendations

State what you want your reader to do with what you did. Your reader wants this! After all, you are the one most familiar with your design. Make positive recommendations about your design; vague ones like “better design is needed” are not useful. If you can design the structure over again or change the layout, type of floor system, material properties, etc., what would you do differently? Appendixes

Here, give details of your design calculations, equations used, long derivations, extensive tabular data, and the like. This is where you put the information needed to convince a “doubting supervisor” for your design. Don’t put it in the Design Section as it will obscure the material.
