PBL MAIN ASPECTS

Students need to do much more than remember information—they need to use higher-order

thinking skills. They also have to learn to work as a team and contribute to a group effort. They

must listen to others and make their own ideas clear when speaking, be able to read a variety of

material, write or otherwise express themselves in various modes, and make effective presentations. These skills, competencies and habits of mind are

often known as 21st century skills.

Main goal of the PBL example: Getting the students to learn and use the ACTIVE AND PASSIVE VOICE.

PBL: ACTIVE VOICE

Activity: Ask every student to write a story about a topic

of their choice, using the active voice.

ACTIVE VOICE

Definition:

In most English sentences the subject performs the action denoted by the verb. That means the subject is doing the verb actions.

Example:

Sally writes a book.

In particular, they further expand the body of words and phrases as well as the body of grammatical

structures they target for use, such as active voice, passive voice, present progressive, conditionals,

relative sentences, etc.

Every participant in the project is required to build his or her own individual check list of vocabulary,

items, considered necessary to use, relevant to the subject matter, along with typical lexical and

grammatical collocations. This has proved to be a more useful format than the copybook

PASSIVE VOICE

Activity: With the story written before, ask the

student to rewrite it, using the passive voice.

PASSIVE VOICE

Definition:

One can change the normal word order of many active sentences (those with a direct object) so that the subject is no longer active, but is, instead, being acted upon by the verb - or passive.

Rephrasing the last example, it could be as follows:

A book is written by Sally.

Here you have another example:

The teacher’s role during this phase is as a referee, adviser, coach and facilitator. He/she addresses

individually the students with different strengths and weaknesses, and assigns additional readings or

provides web-links to articles for those who display readiness

During the next session students share their work, organize, assemble, arrange and rehearse the presentation of the project within their team.

CONCLUSIONS:

PBL is more effective than traditional instruction in increasing academic achievement on annual state-administered assessment tests.

PBL is more effective than traditional instruction for teaching mathematics, economics, science, social science, clinical medical skills, and for careers in the allied health occupations and teaching.

PBL is more effective than traditional instruction for long-term retention, skill development and satisfaction of students and teachers.

PBL is more effective than traditional instruction for preparing students to integrate and explain concepts.

PBL can improve students’ mastery of 21st-century skills.

PBL is especially effective with lower-achieving students

PBL has one factor in common with traditional education - it takes good teachers to make it work well.
