At the centre of New Delhi stands the 42 m high India Gate, an

"Arc-de-Triomphe" like archway in the middle of a crossroad.Almost similar to its French counterpart, it commemorates the

70,000 Indian soldiers who lost their lives fighting for the

British Army during the World War I. The memorial bears the

names of more than 13,516 British and Indian soldiers killed in

the Northwestern Frontier in the Afghan war of 1919.

The foundation stone of India Gate was laid by His Royal

Highness, the Duke of Connaught in 1921 and it was designed by

Edwin Lutyens. The monument was dedicated to the nation 10

years later by the then Viceroy, Lord Irwin. Anothermemorial, Amar Jawan Jyoti was added much later, after India

got its independence. The eternal flame burns day and night

under the arch to remind the nation of soldiers who laid down

their lives in the Indo-Pakistan War of December 1971.

The entire arch stands on a low base of red Bharatpur stone and

rises in stages to a huge moulding. The cornice is inscribed with

the Imperial suns while both sides of the arch have INDIA,

flanked by the dates MCMXIV (1914 left) and MCMXIX (1919

right). The shallow domed bowl at the top was intended to be

filled with burning oil on anniversaries but this is rarely done.

During nightfall, India Gate is dramatically floodlit while the

fountains nearby make a lovely display with coloured lights.

India Gate stands at one end of Rajpath, and the area

surrounding it is generally referred to as 'India Gate'.

Jantar Mantar was built in 1724 by Raja Jai Singh II of Jaipur in Delhi. JantarMantar of Delhi, is an astronomical observatory with masonry instruments.Jantar Mantar in Delhi is a remarkable and curious creation of Raja Jai Singh

II, the mathematician and astronomer king. Jantar Mantar has instrumentsthat can graph the path of the astronomical universe.

The name of this noteworthy astronomical observatory, Jantar Mantarmeans 'instrument for calculation.' There is a colossal Samrat Yantra at the

periphery of Jantar Mantar. To the south of Samrat Yantra there is anamazing instrument called Jai Prakash. The Jai Prakash of Jantar Mantar inDelhi has two concave hemispherical structures and used for determiningthe position of the sun and celestial bodies. Jantar Mantar is built of brickrubble that is plastered in lime. You can see the following instruments insidethe Jantar Mantar of Delhi.

All these instruments can be used for various astronomical calculations. Today the

historical structure is encircled by new office buildings. Jantar Mantar of Delhi is even

used by modern day scholars to ascertain the location of the heavenly bodies in our

    universe.

The Delhi Jantar Mantar is open to public from 10 am to 6 pm. The entry tothis amazing astronomical observatory is free. As it is located at the citycenter adjacent to the well know Connaught Place, you can easily reachDelhi Jantar Mantar without much hassle. If you visit the capital city of NewDelhi, do not forget to have a glimpse of Jantar Mantar-a beautiful creation ofthe Jaipur King.

The Samrat Yantra measured the accurate time of the day. It

also measured the declination of the sun which can be seen bythe shadow moving around the structure.

The Jai Prakash shows the sun's position at the time of equinox. There is a hole near the bottom of the structure which witnesses

sunshine only once in a year that is on 21 march, called vernaleqinox.

Another important structure called the Ram Yantra, consists of

two large buildings with open top. Both these two buildings form

a complete device. The device is used to measure the altitude ofstars which is equivalent to the latitude and the longitude on the

    earth.

To the north-west of the Prakash Yantra, there is a structure orinstrument called Mishra Yantra. It consists of five instruments.

Pillars on the southwest of Mishra Yantra are used to measure

the shortest day (21 December) and the longest day (21 June)of the year.

It is no denying the fact that the structure does represent thescientific heritage of India, though not being used in the modern

scientific research. Having said that, we must give accreditationto the Jantar Mantar for its scientific acumen which could have

reaped more fruits had there been appropriate motivation andresource given for research and development.

    Connaught Place

Connaught place, better known as CP happens to be the heart of shopping

in New Delhi. It is the commercial hub of Delhi that was built in 1931. The

architecture followed a well planned and well structured Victorian style

which was reproduction of the Royal Crescent in Bath, England. The

glamour of CP attracts everyone for both their love for shopping and

entertainment. All the sub markets and shops in Connaught place are

planned in inner and outer circle. The thought behind such a planning was

that the circular structure of the market would be beneficial for both the

shopkeepers and the shoppers. The impressive Connaught place has been

renamed as Rajiv Chowk. The business shops are mostly the big

showrooms. Connaught Place has even a small grocery store to a car

showroom. The colorful crowd adds up to vibrant glory of this historic place.

Connaught place has branches of all the major Nationalized and

International banks, along with the offices of tours operators and emporiums

of different states. One must always be cautious that the market remains

    closed on Sundays.
