BIM Project Execution Planning Overview

The Building Information Modeling (BIM) Project Execution Planning Procedure is a structured method consisting of four (4) steps to create a strategy for BIM implementation throughout a building’s lifecycle.

Page 3: Project Execution Planning for Building Information Modeling (BIM) Project Execution Planning for Building Information Modeling (BIM) STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE

Design BIM Project Execution Process

Define Information Exchange

Requirements

Develop BIM Project Execution Plan

Identify BIM Goals and Uses

Use project and team characteristics to determine BIM Goals and Uses for the Project

Develop a process specifically tailored to the project which includes tasks supported by BIM showing the information exchanges between processes

Define the parties responsible, grouping requirements, and timeframe for each information exchange

Develop a detailed plan and procedure for each use and the information flow between parties

BIM Project Execution Planning Procedure

Step 1: Identify BIM Goals and Uses

Goal: Identify the appropriate BIM goals and Uses based on value added objectives (Lean

Principles)

When: 1st BIM Planning Meeting

Responsible Parties: BIM Project Team (Owner, Architect, Engineers, Contractor(s), Facility Manager)

Resources:• BIM Goal and Use Selection Worksheet helps

identify project BIM goals for each project phase• BIM Ex Wiki provides information on each BIM

Use helpful for the selection process

Step 2: Design BIM Project Execution Process

Goals:1. Create an overview map of the BIM Project

Execution Procedure2. Create Project Process Maps for each BIM Use

identified in Step 1

When: 2nd Initial BIM Planning Meeting

Responsible Parties: Lead Team Members responsible for creating each Project Process Maps

Resources:• Template Process Maps of each BIM Use are

available for a starting point for team members

Two Levels of Process Maps Required

Level 1• A high level process map that outlines

the various BIM uses in the different phases and information exchange that bind them.

Level 2• The template process maps created can

then be taken to develop project specific process map, tailored to the process at hand.

Step 3: Define Information Exchange Requirements

Goal: Define the information exchange requirements identified in Step 2:

• Define the information exchange• Identify the responsible parties • Define the grouping requirements• Identify the timeframe for each exchange

When: 2nd BIM Planning Meeting

Resources: • Information Exchange Requirements Worksheet

identifies the vital information required to implement each BIM Use as described above
