1 Use of Dynamic Traffic Assignment in FSUTMS in Support of Transportation Planning in Florida
FDOT Research #BDK80Task Work Order No. 977-12
June 22 2010
2
Project GoalImplement a dynamic traffic assignment
process within the FSUTMS environment
3
Background (1)
MTF with input from the transportation planning community in Florida has identified the incorporation of DTA in the FSUTMS, as a high priority required improvement
There are many issues that need to be addressed for the successful and optimal implementation of DTA in the FSUTMS
Fright Corridor Management research project will provide valuable input to this project
Interaction with the ITS Operation Tool Project
4
Background (2)
DTA technical sub-committee of the MTF model task force
Coordination with SHRP2 projects
5
Project ObjectivesReview existing DTA capabilitiesIdentify the requirements of Florida demand
modelingIdentify the ability of DTA tools to meet
requirementsIdentify the data requirements and sourcesIdentify and conduct needed modificationsIntegrate DTA capabilities within the FSUTMSDevelop tools to support useDocument the project effort, results, and conclusion
6
Task 1 DTA ReviewReview of DTA literature
DTA approachesTraffic flow modelsModeling capabilities and featuresPrevious applicationsO-D matrix estimationData needsCalibration approaches Integration with other environments
7Task 2: Requirements IdentificationPotential for early surveyWorkshop: In coordination with the DTA sub-
committee of the MTF model advancement committee.Review the results from Task 1 Determine the requirements for DTA modeling as part of
the travel demand forecasting process in Florida
8Task 3: Assessment of Existing Tools Assessment of existing tools and models
Ensure that the tools meet the requirements of using DTA as part of Florida demand forecasting modeling processes
Assess if the tool performs as expectedBugs, limitation, constraints, unexpected/illogical
results, run time, integration problems, technical support
9
Task 4: Enhancement of Tools Perform the enhancements needed to existing DTA
tools to satisfy the Florida modeling requirements
Integrate DTA capabilities within the FSUTMS
Not all identified required enhancements may be possibleReasons why any requirements are not addressed in
this project will be documented
10
Task 5: DTA SupportTools and data to support use and calibration of DTA
Conventional and ITS data will be integrated according to requirement.
O-D estimation process
DTA and traffic flow model parameter calibration
Post processing of data
Advanced technology modeling
11
Potential ProcessFLSWM Matrix
(daily)
Produce hourly matrices using hourly local distribution factors
Short interval matrix estimation using TDM/CUBE
Analyst
Short Interval OD Matrix Estimation using DTA
12
Task 6: Testing This task will include the testing of the developed
DTA environment and tools within the FSUTMS
The research team will select a regional FSUTMS demand model in Florida for the testing of the developments.
The test will include all components of the developed DTA modeling process including data collection, data processing, trip matrix estimation, model input generation, model execution, calibration support, and output post processing
