Project Group on Authority Structure for Uniform Titles

The charge of the group is to make provision for the addition of music uniform titles to the

IFLA document: Guidelines for Authority and Reference Entries. The feasibility of this was dis

cussed and it was agreed that a major problem was the lack of any provision in this document

for a two-tier authority structure into which examples for music scores could easily be insert

ed. It was also agreed that the insertion could probably be done, if certain definitions were an

hanced, such as 'uniform heading', 'uniform title' and 'work', and additional categories and ex

planatory matter added for terminology peculiar to music scores. However, in view of other

documents to which one is referred in the text of the Guidelines for details of the form and

structure of authority headings for specific types of materials, the wisest course seemed to be to

examine some of these documents and then to decide if a similar separate document should

be produced for music scores. Thus the Guidelines would contain only the broad outlines of

the authority structure, the more detailed structure being contained in a separate document.

Project Group ISBD(PM)

The ISBD(PM) Project Group held two working sessions during the Stockholm meeting. The group completed work on Area 1. A copy of the draft text may be requested from the

At the Amsterdam meeting we expect to complete the review of the remaining areas so that

the entire document can be submitted for worldwide review at the end of the Summer of 1987.

Project Group ISBD(NBM)

This group held no meetings in Stockholm. Lenore Coral the editor of ISBD(NBM) report ed that the publication of the revised edition is expected in 1987. IAML needs to begin to con

sider a Project Group to write a Handbook of examples for Sound recordings to enhance the

use of the new edition.

Project Group on UNIMARC

The Universal MARC format (UNIMARC) has been developed as one of the core programs of the International Federation of Library Associations (IFLA).It is intended that UNIMARC

will be used by national bibliographic agencies to communicate machine-readable cataloguing data internationally so that each country will require only one set of conversion programs - in

and out of UNIMARC - rather than needing separate conversion programs for each country with which it communicates. The third edition of UNIMARC, combining format specifications with interpretive instructions, has been prepared by the International MARC office at the Bri tish Library. The I AML Project Group on UNI MARC has been working for several years to en sure that music and sound recordings will be dealt with adequately in this new document which

should be published late in 1986. Following the 1985 meeting in Berlin detailed recommendations were sent to the UNI

MARC officer at the British Library. These recommendations were further refined as several drafts of the UNIMARC fields concerning music materials were reviewed during the year. That work was done chiefly by Joan Colquhoun of the National Library of Canada and Catherine Garland of the Library of Congress.
