How do artists create a sense of mystery or intrigue? Is someone about to walk in, or did they just leave? Can you hear silence or noise in a painting?

Edward Hopper
American Artist (1882-1967)
Edward Hopper gained widespread recognition as a central exponent of American Scene painting, expressing the loneliness, vacuity, and stagnation of town life. Hopper remained an individualist, though, and stated, “I don't think I ever tried to paint the American scene; I'm trying to paint myself.”

Paintings such as Nighthawks (Art Institute of Chicago, 1942) convey a mood of loneliness and desolation by their emptiness or by the presence of anonymous, non-communicating figures. But of this picture Hopper said: `I didn't see it as particularly lonely.

Instructions, rubric and reflection questions:1. Capture interesting scenes/places that you would like to illustrate. Make sure that there is a sense of mystery, intrigue,
emptiness, warmth, or some similar emotion you wish to convey through the scene you choose to illustrate. Use a digital camera to take multiple pictures of different places so you will have choices.
2. Consider conveying a sense of depth or perspective ; look at master works for composition ideas.3. Print your thumbnails images (digital photographs). Working from the thumbnails, create a small ‘notecard ‘ value study,
merging shapes and massing values together until you have 3 main values. One value should be dominant (do not give the same amount of space or importance to all three values, let one dominate the image).
4. Enlarge your best composition to approximately 4” x 6” in your sketchbook, making a complete value study. This will make your painting or drawing more powerful.
5. Decide on a medium, and create several small color studies to determine the best color scheme.6. Use 18 x 24 canvas or 18 x 24 paper that works best with your choice of media7. Collect your supplies and begin your project. It is due in 2 weeks from the day you begin the assignment.
Rubric:1. Planning (thumbnails, value studies, and color study) __________/202. Execution (craftsmanship, handling and use of media) __________/303. Composition (arrangement of elements and principles of art) __________/354. Creativity (use of media, challenging approach to the project) __________/15
Project total _________/100
Reflect on these questions and write your answers in your sketchbook beside your final thumbnail;
8. What do you think was most successful about your project? 9. What media did you choose and why did you select that media?10. Would you change anything about your work if you had more time?
