mercy. Jesus introduces us to these works of mercy in his preaching so that we can know whether or not we
are living as his disciples. Let us rediscover these corporal works of mercy: to feed the hungry, give drink to
the thirsty,clothe the naked, welcome the stranger,
heal the sick, visit the imprisoned, and bury the dead." (Pope Francis)
Pope Francis has invited each of us to reflect more deeply this year on the role mercy can and should play in our lives. How can we, through our words and actions, live mercy more intentionally? What can we do, as people of faith, to extend God's mercy to those most in need? Caritas Day 2016 is a beautiful opportunity to enliven our community with the strength of this message of love and mercy. We are called to be carriers of a powerful message which can have a positive influence on our community and those we serve. God has blessed us with awareness that our time, talent and treasures are to be shared with our brothers and sisters in need and we invite you to join us in our mission to serve them this Lent through our Caritas Day of Outreach. We pray that our words bring comfort, our hearts bring healing and our actions speak volumes of the love and compassion of our God.

PRE‐PROJECT
If you have not done so already – please register into our Caritas Day Registra on System Once you receive your roster, make contact with your group volunteers and introduce
yourself (A roster will be provided) Encourage your group to begin collec ng the items needed for a successful project Meet with our Outreach Supplies Coordinator to ensure you have all project materials pre‐
pared prior to your project day Ensure you understand all details of your project‐ if your project involves assembling, you
are invited to pre‐make an example with Outreach Core Leader ahead of me Drive by your site to get a feel for your loca on and parking (op onal) or view your class‐
room if you are a Cathedral Centre Project Make contact with the Agency Staff assigned to your project and introduce yourself – clari‐
fy all details with them to ensure no changes have occurred prior to the event PROJECT DAY
Project Leaders are asked to arrive early for set up (no later then 7am) Ensure all materials for the project are prepared in your classroom or are ready to ar‐
rive at your site with you (if any) Project Leaders are asked to wear RED and will be given a RED Apron to wear on pro‐
ject day to iden fy yourself as a project leader Pick up your Leader’s packet upon arrival. This will have the following: Roster, Name
Tags, Prayers, Project Comple on Forms, Tax Forms and Check Request Forms, and pens.
Welcome your group when they arrive at your Pew. Verify each volunteer is on your roster and have them sign in. All Volunteers are asked to stay for the en re project me to ensure the project is
completed Please complete a project survey with your group before ending the project Return all supplies and finished products to the Outreach Supply Room Leave your project roster and survey with your finished projects If project is Offsite ‐ Ensure all volunteers have clear direc ons on how to get to site –
arrange carpools if desire Seek out and make contact with Agency Leader upon arrival & introduce your group to
them Headcount at Site to ensure everyone has arrived Ensure every volunteer has a specific job at site – watch to make sure no one is le

BE PREPARED (Par cipant Ques ons that may arise)
Can we bring unregistered friends with us to the project? Due to space limita ons, and in fair-
ness to all volunteers – everyone must be pre-registered for the project. No drop ins will be
allowed to stay.
Do you have a rain plan with the agency? Always check with your agency if your project will be
outdoors
How do I get to the site and where do I park? Refer to Project Planning Sheet

If we are a family coming to help – do each of us bring the scheduled item or do we bring just
one from the family? Every par cipant is asked to bring their scheduled item. This ensure that
we have enough supplies to complete the project.

Event Day Project Checklist
Below are a few helpful hints on managing the execu on of your Caritas Day Project: ______Verify Room Assignment and prepare the set up of your room to meet the needs of your project and to
accommodate the number of persons in your group (Friday Night– Pre Caritas Day)
______Verify Materials and tasks are ready prior to volunteers arriving
______ Welcome Volunteers by gree ng them at your assigned gathering spot in Church (pew).
_____ Check A endance by using your project roster, check all volunteers who have arrived in your
group. Take their entrance ckets. If someone arrives for your project and is not on your roster,
they will need to go to our Caritas Registra on Table in the Church Narthex. We cannot guarantee
there will be space for them in a project. PLEASE TURN YOUR ROSTERS IN BEFORE MASS (this will
allow us to see if any projects have space available for drop ins)
_____Present Project Introduc on by giving a brief overview of the project to your volunteers before
star ng your project, including the impact of the project (how it will affect the community,
organiza on and people you are serving). Although Off Site agencies will provide this for you, it is
good for your group to know that you are also knowledgeable about this agency and project
_____ Share Site Ameni es by giving important details about the site, including accessibility to water (for
clean up or drinking), restroom facili es, adequate parking, first aid kits, etc… Also, where does
your group meet at the end of the project in the event your group tasks are split at the agency?
Where do they sign in/out?
_____ Mo vate and Manage Volunteers by ensuring that each volunteer has a task to complete, manage the
project’s me for effec ve service and priori ze tasks, comple ng the most important jobs first. At
the half way point, ask if there is too much or not enough to do. Have back up projects available for
extra work.
_____ Monitor Safety, especially if your volunteers are using hand tools. Do Not allow any minor (child)
to work away from the group, use the facili es alone or leave the project site without their parent!
All minors must be accompanied by a parent or adult guardian during the en re project
_____ Don’t Get Wrapped Up in doing the work; be available for answering ques ons and troubleshoo ng.
_____ Take Photos! We encourage our group leaders to take pictures of our volunteers in ac on during the
projects. However, please make sure you have agency approval before doing so. Some agencies may
require that you refrain from photographing any of the clients they are serving. Also remind volun
teers that if they have not given permission for us to use the photos for publicity purposes, please
step out of camera’s view
_____Clean Up, Reflect and Evaluate! Start cleaning up your project at 11:30am, follow all direc ons given for
your site project and bring all finished projects (if applicable) to the Caritas Day Supply Room. Before
dismissing your volunteers, complete a group evalua on of your project and end with prayer.
Thank your volunteers and inform them of future volunteer opportuni es with our parish

Pre-Project Check List
If we plan our service projects well beforehand, we can expect things to run pretty smoothly during the actual day of service. But we all know that sometimes things don’t go as ex-pected. Here is a checklist to help you manage logistics for your Caritas Day Service Pro-ject: Project Logistics There are several logistical concerns leading up to the day of your project. Be ready to ad-dress the following questions: Check in will be at the Cathedral beginning at 7:30 am. Mass begins promptly at 8:00
am. All participants must check in at the Cathedral before going to their sites. Everyone should be in their seat prior to Mass beginning.
Have you thought about how you will create a fun environment? Do you have a CD player? Think about how you are going to provide an energizing atmosphere. (Christian Music CDs are available from Outreach)
Are there questions and concerns that still need to be addressed? If you do not think your project/task is feasible or if you do not know how to do your project, be sure to dis-cuss these concerns with our Caritas Chair and discuss any changes that you feel need to be made to enhance the success of your project. Have you met with your Co-Leaders to make sure that everyone is comfortable with the scope of the project and understands the plan. Leaders should be familiar with the layout of the site, classroom and emergency procedures. Be sure to stay in contact with your Co-Leaders about the details of your project and delegate tasks.
Have you finalized the project plan? Have you shared it with all parties involved (agencies/co-leaders)? If necessary, make additional visits to the service site in order to finalize the task matrix and to ensure that you are prepared to run a successful project. If your project will be outdoors—have a back up plan in the event of rain.
Do you have your project kit packed? Confirm all tools and materials are available for the project completion and alert the Caritas Chair to any items that have been over-looked. For off-site projects: extra gloves, trash bags and water are always a good idea!
Have you made contact with your group volunteers? Do you have an up to date group roster with contact info? You should contact each volunteer via email and by phone pri-or to the event date. Make sure they have your contact info in case they are not able to make the event day or have questions. Remind them to WEAR RED!
Do you need to identify a bilingual speaker for your group? We want all volunteers to have a meaningful experience, so please make sure that you or someone in your group has the language capabilities to communicate with each volunteer. Notify the Caritas Chair if you need assistance with this. Our Caritas Registration log lists volunteers in each group who are available for translation.
Make contact with your agency sites. Remind them you are coming and get up to date info. (
If you have obtained donations, either in-kind or financial, please give the donors info to our Caritas Chair so a proper thank you can be sent to them from our parish. Please have your volunteers fill in on the roster the value of their donation brought to your project. If anyone needs a tax receipt these can be found in the Outreach Room

Scheduling Do you have a printed schedule of the event day and have you reviewed it? Verify the time your group will need to be at your site location Are your volunteers aware of the time they need to arrive at the Cathedral? (7:30am door
open) Event Site Do your volunteers have directions to the site? Note: There will be challenges for driving into the downtown area due to the Rodeo Parade. Caritas Day Parking? Please direct your volunteers to park in any of the (3) designated park-
ing areas for the Cathedral. These areas can be viewed on our parish website at www.sacredhearthouston.org - visit the directions and parking link. Note: No parking will be available in the Cathedral Centre Lot
Is there a place where volunteers can put their personal belongings at off site locations? Please advise them that the safest place for their valuables and personal items is probably in the trunk of their car. Note: some agencies will not allow our volunteers to bring personal items in with them.
Registration—Sign In Alert your volunteers to the sign in procedure for the event day—they will go directly to you
with tickets. Does your site agency require additional volunteer forms to be completed and brought? Or is
there additional registration that must be completed with the site prior to the event day? All participants must bring their Caritas tickets for entrance (one per person) with them on
day of event If participants do not have a ticket—make sure they are on your roster—if they are not please
send them to the Caritas Table in the Narthex. It is important that we know who we have in our projects.
Participants will be given a Caritas Day Participant sticker that must be worn during the event. Ensure all of your volunteers have one of these and are wearing them. These identify to our site agencies and our hall monitors that they belong with Caritas Day.
For those in your group who have reserved a lunch—you will give them their lunch ticket when they arrive
Weather and Attire Are you aware of the contingency plan for your site location if there is bad weather that will
hinder your project to be completed? Do your group volunteers know how to find out about a change in plans? Do your volunteers know how to dress for your project and what items they need to bring
with them? Refer to your Project Planning Sheet for these details.

Safety Are there first aid kits, water stations, phones and volunteer safety accessories on site? Do you have a plan for monitoring the site if there are construction tools being used? Are there any special safety concerns for the use of special tools or supplies being used for
your project? Do you know how you can encourage everyone to be safe and have fun? The Cathedral Centre will have Hall Monitors on each floor to help direct volunteers to their
project location and to handle any safety concerns during the day For off site projects—please emphasize to your volunteers that no child (any minor) cannot
be left alone at anytime during the project and that they must remain with their parent or adult guardian during the entire event
Food and Beverages Donuts and juice will be available in the morning immediately following Mass dismissal.
For those leaving for off-site projects the breakfast tables will be set up near their exit loca-tion so they can grab and go (details about location will be given prior to dismissal).
All Caritas participants are invited to return to the Cathedral Centre for lunch (Hot Dog lunch provided by our Knights of Columbus). Please remind your group they must RSVP to reserve a lunch plate. There is no cost for this.
The Cathedral Centre will have a Hospitality Room (location will be announced day of event) where participants are welcome to take a break and find refreshments snacks and drinks there.
If you are an off site project—please remind your volunteers to pack their own water and snacks or you may choose to bring water bottles and snacks for them. If you need assistance please contact a Caritas Chair.
Evaluation & Feedback All leaders will be given a project evaluation to complete with your group before dismissal. Feed-
back from your group participants helps us to know how successful the project was and if we should repeat the project in future years. It also allows us to take care of concerns and enhance the project to better serve our community and participants.
Be on the look out for future Caritas Leaders! If you see leadership qualities in some of your volun-teers, approach them and see if they might be interested in serving as a Caritas Day Project Leader next year. If so, please let the Caritas Day Chair know of their interest. Better yet—remind your participants about the works of our Parish Outreach Ministry and invite them to become involved. Our Outreach Ministry is much like Caritas Day but continues with monthly projects. An Outreach Flyer stand with information is available in the Church Narthex—invite them to visit it or to go online to our parish website.
Closing Reflection/Prayer Due to the different times some of our projects will be completed—we ask that you close your project
with final prayer as a group before everyone leaves. Take a few minutes and share some thoughts together.
If your project ends early—no problem. Lunch will be available and can be served when they arrive. Please utilize your volunteers to help clean up your project space and to return the supplies to the
Outreach Room Make arrangements with your group to deliver the finished projects to your agencies. Throughout the project—BE A LEADER! Know your outcome and convey it to the volunteers. Be orga-nized, delegate work to volunteers and keep the project on schedule. HAVE FUN and encourage volun-teers to enjoy the service too. Remember that we represent the Catholic Church, please remind your vol-unteers to act appropriately, treating others with respect, dignity and love.

This is a family day of service and out-reach, where parishioners of all ages come together to serve our community in need. This year we will have over 500 participants who will volunteer their time in 36 different projects, helping to support children who are sick, homeless, runaways and in foster care, the elderly poor and disabled, homeless men and women, and those who are hungry, blind or terminally ill. This year our parish is partnering with 30 non-profit agencies in Houston, to serve over 15,000 individuals and families in their time of need. Some of our projects are unique, such as our Caps for Kids with Cancer pro-ject, our Snack Packs and Brown Bag projects for the homeless, our Hope Totes for battered women and survivors of human trafficking, our Joy in a Jar project for homeless immigrant children and Build A Ramp Project for the disabled. These are but a few of the many projects our volunteers will be involved with to make life a little better for others. The success of our Caritas Day not only relies upon our generous volunteers, but is dependent on the sup-plies we can gather to complete these creative projects.

Prayer Before Our Project
Almighty and most merciful God, we remember before you all poor and neglected persons whom it would be easy for us to forget: the homeless and the destitute, the old and the sick, and all who have none to care for them. Help us to heal those who are broken in body or spirit, and to turn their sorrow into joy. Grant this, Father, for the love of your Son, who for our sake became poor, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Prayer A er Our Project
Dear Lord, We pray for the recipient of our service this day and we ask
you to relieve their stress and anxiety. We pray that they feel your presence and have the courage
to place their heavy burdens, one by one, at your feet. Please carry these burdens for them,
so that they don’t have to. Replace them with your humble and gentle yoke
so that they will find rest for their soul today. May they receive your gi of peace of mind and heart.
Keep them safe as they lay their head tonight in peace and sleep.
We know that you, Lord, will keep them safe. Help them to know that they need not to be afraid
because you are always with them. Please keep them daily, Lord, in your perfect peace.

Prayer Loving God, as your people We are ready to respond to your call to serve. May we share in Christ’s own mission To care for the poor and proclaim the gospel to all. Brief sacred pause Lord Jesus, we pray for the poor in our community And for those who offer them help. We pray for all who work for a more just society. We pray for the oppressed and those whom society counts for nothing. May our love today be a selfless love which invites those we will serve to experience the true meaning of Caritas - and God within us. Pause and thank God for His goodness
Prayer Blessed are you, Holy One. You hold us in your hands. Be with us THIS day. Bless our hands, that we might hold others as dearly as you hold them. Send healing to those who are ill, comfort to those who struggle, and relief to all in pain, for the sake of Jesus. Amen.

What are the Works of Mercy?
It is my burning desire, that during this jubilee, the Christian people may reflect on the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy" (Pope Francis)
Jesus teaches us Compassion - MERCY
"Jesus, seeing the crowds of people who followed him, realized that they were tired and exhausted, lost and without a guide, and he felt deep com-passion for them (cf. Mt 9:36). On the basis of this compassionate love he healed the sick who were presented to him (cf. Mt 14:14), and with just a
few loaves of bread and fish he satisfied the enormous crowd (cf. Mt 15:37). What moved Jesus in all of these situations was nothing other
than mercy, with which he read the hearts of those he encountered and responded to their deepest need." (Misericordiae Vultus, paragraph 8)

opening of the Holy Door of Mercy took place in the Basilica of St. Peter, December 8, 2015
"By crossing the threshold of the Holy Door, we will find the strength to embrace God's mercy and dedicate ourselves to being merciful with others as the
Father has been with us." – Pope Francis, Misericordiae Vultus
In this Jubilee Year of Mercy, passing through a Holy Door is part of the pilgrimage that all Catholics are encouraged to make, whether during a trip to Rome or a trip to the cathedrals or specially designated churches in their own dioceses. These pilgrimages come with special graces, and they allow
each of us to share in the many blessings of the Holy Year.
The Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart will serve as a pilgrimage site in the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston
CARITAS DAY IN THE JUBILEE YEAR OF MERCY
In this Jubilee Year of Mercy, Pope Francis encourages us to open our hands of mercy to others, not only to fill their hands with food and clothing, but to fill
their hearts with respect for their dignity as children of God.
Merciful God, your mercy is inexhaustible. Help us to extend your mercy to those around us through the corporal and spiritual acts of mercy. May we always be willingto do the good that is before us.
Help us always to be witnesses of your mercy in our words and in our deeds. May we pay special attention to those who are poor or vulnerable, sick or lonely, or marginalized. And may we also never forget to be
merciful with family members and others who are closest to us. Amen
